  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Another taste...

I thought for a sec that they added a lens cause that is all I noticed. More than happy with all the additions. Hey a free lens would rule but I would never expect that. I was just red hungover.

...You can put the modules in any order you want...

Jim

This modular / high processing power ability (EPIC) has got me wondering...

Can you have more than one RED MAG 128 module in line?

The reason I ask:

How about a way to shoot in RAW to one Mag, and then have the Camera create FF1080p files on the fly (or when idle) to the other 128 MAG?

I realize that's a lot of processing and the data path may not be possible, but I figured it was worth asking. Imagine that the Camera can create FF1080p or even lower-res clips for Dailies on set. (Free space on the secondary drive would, of course, have to be verified when in this mode.)

On the fly would be best, so there is no additional work stoppage time.

love this stuff. ;-)

Can I put modules in front of the brain?

:P

You can do anything you want. Whether it still works or not depends on what you do. :-)

Could I get a free Epic SS35 including all neccissary modules and a Red Primes kit. I'll be super greatful. I'll be so greatful and happy that you'll feel so happy for me that you'll happy you didnt make me pay for it. :D

More pieces...

This amazing design gets better every day.

If it's true that it refers to a 128 GB SSD, it may be a good compromise between hunger for capacity and price, when the camera is available, or even more so, later.
Being the half of current Red drive, but considering a higher data rate, hopefully it may still allow a useful autonomy, and for sure a more robust type of technology.

Will the red side panels (but not the platinum ones, certainly, unless you are owner of a Red One with the proper, early, serial numer) be available as spare parts in the shop? Thanks

Jim,

Yes and no...i mean, some will be tempted (like me) to go the FF35 route because of the higher dynamic range of the Monstro sensor over the Mysterium X.

Some like my brother and I, for example.
This dilemma could be solved upgrading the concept to Anything-X, a special version of the FF35 camera too, or just adding the choice of a Monstro-X sensor with only the S35 area activated, beside Mysterium-X.
It will stimulate more users to upgrade from their Red One to the new camera, and perfectly conform to the idea of modularity.
I would not like to upgrade to Misterium-x, then change brain in order to have Monstro, and as a old loyal customer spend more then the ones who buy the new camera with Monstro for the first time.
Unless one is sure to never upgrade from Mysterium, I think it's preferrable to have more initial choice then in post.

I agree. I was just a bit surprised about it. It's the first time this has been confirmed. Kinda funny that it seems people are responding rather nonchalantly as if it were assumed, when this is actually something pretty huge.

I expected someone (not necessarily RED) to come up with (or at least try) a cabled solution for this when I first saw the photos of the new Epic :whistling:

I doubt wireless is going to give the bandwidth needed for most of the newer REDCODE formats.

I doubt that too - at least for a while or until RED sets a new standard in the WiFi area (like they did with CF cards ).

Is it just me or are the media slots (CF and RedMag) on the wrong side of the camera? It seems like it would make more sense that something you need to access frequently would be on the operator's side not the 'dumb side'.

Also, it looks to me like RedMags are 2.5" (Laptop sized) SSD drives. The size in the renderings seems about right for that. The back side of a laptop drive is about one and a half times the width of a CF card. It's a great solution if that's what it is!

What if the modules can be flipped and mounted to face either side?

I also notice that the renderings include a Stills/Motion mode switch. That's how the competition does it... boring.

I think a camera that could grab stills while capturing motion would be much more useful. If anyone can solve a technical challenge like that it's the guys at Red!

How can you have different apertures and shutter speeds at the same time? And you ARE recording stills at the same time as motion (at motion settings). 24 frames of stills a second.

Not sure what exactly you are thinking here.

I personally want my motion settings to be something like ISO 320, 180 degree shutter (1/48th second) and my stills settings to be something like ISO 200, 1/500th sec. and highest quality REDCODE possible for stills.

Both of these are two different settings groups. I need a switch.

I think the 'dumb' side would be better because the 1st or 2nd could swap stuff out without having to get past the operator. I think almost every on-camera tape transport I've ever seen opens from the dumb side. What operator wants to take the the whole camera down off their shoulder just to swap a CF card or RED Mag?

I think you might be missing the point. Did you look at the new renders? You can put the media anywhere you want. That is the whole point of the modular system. You are not "stuck" with anything..

Still hoping to hear if this is possible... I'm guessing there are processing power, data path, and color space issues, but who knows...

Maybe a "dailies module" could be possible?
