  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Another breakthrough...

I think that the important message to the community is that you can grow your system without having to always buy a new camera. We are making more from a RED ONE camera than anyone ever dreamed. And yet the RED ONE is still limited. The next RED cameras will NEVER be limited. That is the beauty of EPIC and Scarlet.

Anyone who invested in RED... the RED ONE, has received more than they bargained for. Anyone who invests in the future of RED is investing in a philosophy.

How many camera companies do this? How many companies in any industry do this? Free upgrades that make you product measurably better. Trade in your old for full credit? A system that never goes out of date?

Those that believed in RED at NAB 2006 are smarter than they ever imagined. We want to make it so...

Jim

puts the whole "redone vs..." into perspective for me. talk about getting your bang for your buck. i paid for a stick of dynamite and i get a mini-nuke in the mail (that's upgradeable). go figure.

happy and content i own a redone.

But wasn't that only because Stu M threatened to buy a Nikon if they didn't :-) ? Seriously though, there's a vast difference between a mindset of continual improvement in firmware to add features and make things better because you want them to be better, and being forced into it through a customer revolt reminding you that most of the world is not based on NTSC frame rates.

Don't even get me started. It's pretty sad when people have to take their free time just to hack your OS to turn off audio gain, or add levels.

But the fact you guys are getting more DR at the levels you already have, such a tease! :)

I was on a shoot today with a camera that didn't have the best DR. I think I mumbled "man, if you had a Scarlet" under my breathe.

There's a level of expectation for a camera that costs 30k compared to one that costs one tenth of that. What's pretty sad is that the fanboys here continue to knock a product that has given many novice filmmakers the opportunity to get into the business. The RED ONE is a fantastic tool so why the insecurity?

Your last comment is bewildering. At least use an example that is actually available.

Oh yes. Again I have to say: The combination of FedEx and german customs is especially deadly. My Red Zoom ist being kept in Frankfurt since 8 days for some unknown reason, inspite of me doing everything by the (very large) book.

Jochen

Call the customes. I waited like 2 weeks for a crane that got stuck in custome. It was some missing paper so i mailed the the info and got it couple of days after. Goodluck.

I have my own broker's license, and pick up all gear at the airport directly. License cost $100 or so and paid for itself instantly

I must have been saying that for almost two years now, on every shoot.

The camera's awesome but this is why I decided to buy a Red One. It's great to know after you've invested in a lot of money (for me at least) that you're really being taken care of. Please don't stop doing this - it's very much appreciated, Jim :)

I just love these updates. I am so glad that Jim and everybody at Red give us these glimpses into the development of their cameras.

Can't wait, can't wait to own one.

Jim,
will a camera WITH the sensor upgrade be credited the same as a camera WITHOUT the new sensor, when trading-in for a Scarlet/Epic? Or more? (How much)?
We have 2 Red Ones. Since we may decide to trade-in one of the two for a Scarlet or Epic, will it be worthwhile to upgraded the sensor for that camera, if it has to go? Not if the credit is going to be the same, right? Or there is a surprise that is yet to be announced?

...before you may ask why we would want to upgrade a sensor for a camera if we know that we want to trade-in that camera for a Scarlet/Epic, well, at this moment we are not sure at all if we will go Scarlet/Epic, or M-X.

The trade-in amount doesn't change. The only reasons (as I have posted before) to upgrade a RED ONE to M-X are:

1. You just want to and can afford it... you want the best images you can get now no matter what the cost.
2. You plan on keeping your RED ONE and want the best sensor in it... whether you buy an EPIC or not.
3. You can recoup your costs of the upgrade before you trade it in on an EPIC, either through your jobs or rental.
4. You plan on keeping your RED ONE and will buy an EPIC and want the footage to match.

Did I forget anything?

6. You get a cool new emblem on the side of the Camera is number 1!
