  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Announcing the RED TOUCH 7" @IBC14

Do you have SIDE HANDLE and maybe a SmallHD or anytype of Non-Touch display?

That could work in the interim.

But yea I feel for you.

IIRC, you had to be on the Beta firmware before you can see menus on anything other than a RED touchscreen... is that still the case with the most recent Beta firmware?

I interact with lots of folks on the production side and get weird phone calls from country X at Y o'clock. Often cables are treated the worst in the field. Ran over, crinked, tugged out, yanked, used to strangle PAs, etc.....

Don't know if it's the 18" specifically, but I would inspect it for any potential damage and certainly check those pins.

Also, a side note. I always inspect my camera after and before shoots and give it a good pampering. Connectors, REDMAG slots, fans, etc... Even the threads. I've seen mud inside Side SSD Module on set. A clean brain is a happy brain.

Hello Phil,

Do you mind making a thread detailing your post shoot camera inspection process? Do you have a checklist process that you go through sort of like they do for airplanes? Or do you just clean what was used during the shoot?

Thank you.

It's easier to digest than that.

Prior and after each shoot I inspect the camera fully to make sure all the ports are clear, cables aren't pinched, and the gear is fully functional. The means checking every item and often cleaning everything as well. Including the hard case. It's nice to vacuum those out every now and again.

The checklist is a moving target because the gear changes. This week I'm working with two Dragons, 8 lenses, AKS, and various amounts of support gear. Everything needs to go off without a hitch. Everything gets checked and cleaned.

Thank you for your comments and insights @Phil Holland

Hey heard that we cant buy the 5", this is not good as a Red owner and camera operator for many years the 5" is perfect.
This is a bad movie I love the
5" monitor.
Truly bring back the
5" monitor PLEASE !!!!!

Maybe they will update it? I know it's a far better fit for my work then a 7" would be. An updated 5" could be good if they can keep the price not much more expensive then the original.

A 1080P 5" with flip/flop...finally...would be great.

Heck how about 4K 5" ;)

Kidding of course.

I love my 7" but need to test a few more cables to see if my unit needs fixing.

Im getting odd results with a single 18" cable but same cable works on all kinds of RED display options.

I think the 7" may be a little more sensitive to cable inconsistencies. I also have one cable that doesn't play well with the 7", but works fine on my 5" and Bomb EVF. And the 7" works fine with other cables.

I found some odds and ends to test with (from an older MX kit).

Hope I can pin point this issue.

Cant afford to have to send it back for repairs.

I was really hoping for a monitor from RED that had recording capabilities. The one thing about shooting with my Dragon is I'm always conscious of the fact that there is no redundancy whatsoever.

The current RED Touch 5" is running on fumes from a supply standpoint. Likely, only battle-tested units will be available moving forward. No, no flip on this, does not have the proper hardware capabilities.

Rest assured, additional LCDs are being worked on so you will have additional options on top of the RED Touch 7" and 9".

Brent have you been hearing a lot of the current issues with the TOUCH 7" and certain cables?

Frankly, no. But I can pass along to sustaining engineering and QC to look into it.

Thanks Brent please do.

Too happy to have to let it go back to the shop for testing :)

I'm wondering how deep the fulfillment list is. I placed an order Nov 19 - am I in a good spot to receive the monitor before the end of the year?
