  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Announcing RED RAVEN

I'm quite happy w/ my Epic D ..

but i gotta say, Raven looks to be such a great indie cam - especially for gimbal/steadicam

Lighter weight WITH built in wi-fi, top plate ...and over crank 4k on a dragon sensor.

Plus Weapon ergo.

I can see clean 2K 4:2:2 prores from the 4K image gate being used a lot, if not for just instant offlining.

It would rock if someone releases a $1k-ish expander w/ just Vmount, AC in, and SDI out.

Maybe thats the DSMC² Base I/O V-Lock Expander.

Well most of it is integrated in the epic and scarlet bodies :)
I think I prefer the lemo power port on the old body, it seems easier with a right angle cable and battery belt clip. Nothing goes past the body back. I'm curious to see the difference in size and weight between the old and the weapon body then as the older body doesn't need a module with the belt clip.
It's a nice module though.

i e always found the Lemo port and hdmi in the back of the epic to be a huge pain...

The unit looks incredible, but I'm having a real hard time wrapping my head around using mic level 3.5mm jacks. I realize size and cost were considerations in the design, but would it really have been so tough to put a TA3 connector and line/mic level switch on there and just charge us a few hundred dollars more?

EDIT: Noticed they found room to add a USB connector, and yet stuck with the 3.5mm jack. :(

External audio is the way to go, simple scratch audio for the red cams are all you will need, or just run an xlr adapter to the audio jack on the module, the mics on the front of the camera should be more than fine

External audio is a royal pain in the ass for one man shows. Plus, it's 2015, where any decent camera can record quality sound so long as it's fed a good quality signal from something like a Sound Device pre amp or mixer. Just sad that were limited to an audio connector that costs 5 cents.

If you look over in the Audio sub section of the forum, you'll find a thread on the second page where 9 out of 10 users say they record in camera using an external mixer on gigs where the budget doesnt permit a dedicated sound tech. If you take into account the demographic for Raven, this percentage of users who will want to record in camera is bound to increase.

Hey Nathan didn't realize your right up the road from me, I know lots of sound guys who work pretty cheap should hit me up

Thanks Matthew. I actually rarely do any shooting, but when I do it's overseas or in the States (shooting Phoenix and Vegas later this month). It's always chaotic hack jobs, so I never have time or resources to hire extra staff. One day I'll get to that (have a big project coming up in Toronto early next year that I can finally have a proper dedicated crew), but otherwise it's always in camera audio. In a perfect world that wouldn't be the case, but then again, in a perfect world we'd have proper audio connectors. :p

Sounds like you're in the market for a C300. You can get them for $5K used these days. Killer deal, really.

This would've been perfect with interchangeable mounts. Very disappointed you went with Canon. With the terrible lifespan of cameras now, I refuse to make my lenses consumer electronics too. I don't buy any lenses which require any electronic communication with the camera to do anything. That means no lenses without iris rings, no lenses with focus-by-wire, nothing to be bricked in 5 years when Canon changes mounts again and sends EF users to the same purgatory as FD users. Really hoping for a Nikon version.

You should use a novoflex EF adapter, they work great with AIS lenses in F mount. I'm in the opposite situation, I'm disapointed (that word is really too much, but I'm not english fluent) in Raven because I would have love to use Nikon G electonic lenses with Foolcontrol, or RF compatible devices. Because I think that's the point of Raven. Filming Red the same way we do 5D, point and shoot. Right now, I'm miserably leaning to Tokina ans Sigma for my kit to be able to use the Raven.

So, apparently the Base I/O w/V-mount is coming out in March, and the brain in February. If I get my brain in February, without buying a Jetpack or the Base I/O w/out V-Mount I won't be able to turn on my camera.

Will there be a V-Mount plate direct from RED that would let me just buy the Base I/O ahead of time?

this is the one thing that throws me for a loop, i cant believe we cant even power the brain from AC, those 3rd party compnaies are going to sell a lot of i/o modules. i really love reds all in design too, but if my brain arrives in feb, i plan to have an i/o to be able to turn it on and test it out immediately, or what do i have it for, to be able to design a case?
i really really really hope to see a third party, very simple, no sound, gold mount battery and hdmi out i/o released in jan from someone, please!

THANKS GUYS !!!!!

I'm sure due to weapon shipping first raven will have accessories in place in time..

Pretty sure they will be sending cameras that can turn on.. Which would mean shipping the expansion modules at the same time

how? if the brain cant be turned on with the new i/o modules they say wont ship until march?
i guess you can get the more expensive 2 i/o system going for weapon, from what im hearing you need one to use the included AC power cord.

You are looking at individual item shipping dates, not the package shipping dates.

I would expect, considering the volume of Raven orders, that RED will provide "kit" fulfillment as kits ship in this case.

That's just my hunch though.

not sure what you are saying exactly? i was agreeing with someone saying that people that ordered the brain only will have the camera before the new i/o is available, and prpbably forced to go with a third party, since that it what makes the kit ship later, in march.

Why buy just the brain? Unless you already had 3rd party options in mind, or plan on waiting to see what people decide to sell.. I'm confused what all the worry is about

New modules are being announced soon. I didn't want to commit to ordering an existing package when something else might emerge that's more suitable to my shooting needs. Plus there weren't even any details outlining the I/o module, nor any indication of cost savings.

I honestly assumed id have the ability to change packages once more details were released. Instead if we want to change then we forfeit our place in the queue. :(

Either way, it is what it is. :)
