  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Announcing RED RAVEN

I don't really think it's a lowered data rate. According to my calculations (which could be really off) 6K requires about double the data rate of 4K. So all things being equal, if Epic requires 200MB/s Raven should only require 100MB/s. So I'm not sure that 140MB/s is really a limitation for this sensor.

If the Raven can read the full sensor at 120fps, then clearly the data exists, and in order for it to be compressed, the data has to be read in full and processed. That's significantly more data than the 140MB/s that's being recorded at 13:1 Redcode. My guess would be about 13x more. ;)

Again, please don't get me wrong guys, the Raven is awesome and I have one pre-ordered. I'm merely trying to see if the processed power can be amped up in a future paid upgrade. Probably tough to answer so early, but maybe we can at least find out if there's any intention of offering any sort of upgrade path for Raven without having to jump up all the way to Weapon.

I think the Raven will stay as it is. People were asking for 4.5K on scarlet MX, it never happened. They have other cameras in their lineup. If you want more, buy a better model. I don't understand what you need though, redcode 3:1 is already incredible at this price. 120fps is on par with the epic dragon which is way more expensive. 20k$ more.

Checking the data rates there, you can see there is a logic for all the Red cameras regarding the processing power.

Absolutely.

Keep in mind that this may be a cheap camera by Red's standards, but it's still a hefty investment for some of us. Doesn't hurt to simply inquire and see what possible upgrade path may exist down the road. It's by no means an obligation or requirement by Red, but it's definitely something worth consideration.

Just passing by to thank the Red team. The Raven
Is exactly what we needed.
My generation likes small cameras, well priced, lightweight
But naughty and sexy.
And this is exactly what we wanted.
Congrats.

Basic arithmetic confirms that you are correct: 6K uses about twice the data rate of 4K. A little more, actually, according to my numbers.

So, apparently the Base I/O w/V-mount is coming out in March, and the brain in February. If I get my brain in February, without buying a Jetpack or the Base I/O w/out V-Mount I won't be able to turn on my camera.

Will there be a V-Mount plate direct from RED that would let me just buy the Base I/O ahead of time?

Unclear to me if the RAVEN will start shipping in Feb or will be delivered in Feb.

From Jarred a few moments ago. RED Raven + V-Lock Expander:

*edit - P-Tap up top as well.

Freaking clean design.
Now, if only globalmediapro would do an 80-90W v-lock in the form of Sony's olivine..

Phil, do you guys have a price for the v-lock expander?

I have nothing other than that image at the moment. I would expect it to be more expensive than the Base Expander of course.

so that is a V Mount built in with the Expander (SDI/HDMI/ETC) Love it man hopefully the price is nice too
