  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Announcing RED RAVEN

What I said was: smaller, lighter, faster and cheaper. I would also expect that media to work all the time. Just like every other CF-card I've owned. So when that skater pulls off that trick he worked on for months—I actually get it on the card.
I said "gladly lose a shot or two" in situations that that are for personal benefit only, to not have to deal with the ridiculous sentiment that Cfast cards will break all the time and Mini-Mags never miss a beat.

I guess this is were current RED users and prospect RED users views just clash:
Part of the reasons of buying into the RED ecosystem is the belief to get features, only RED (and maybe other high-end cameras) offer.
10 years ago that was one reason for me, to buy into Panasonic's P2 system.
A pro-recording system, that never lost a shot.
Did I get corrupted files with P2?
Yes, once, with an 8GB card, that cost way over 1000$.

When the 5D happened and all the cameras that followed many professionals were hesitant to shoot on CF or SD cards.
At that time the argument against using them was the same, the argument for it was pro-photographers use it all the time to shoot once-in-a-lifetime-hit-or-miss images.
And here we are, with millions of hours of footage shot on CF and SDHC.

The Raven is for RED, what the HVX200 was for Panasonic: A gateway to its at certain points proprietary ecosystem.
Still, you get a lot for way less than the manufacturers otherwise offerings.
But to make it work for both sides, certain things will stay proprietary and thus expensive.
The good thing about RED is, the proprietary parts can be used further down the path.

This is nothing new and a common business strategy (if I recall, Wilkinson invented this, by offering disposable razor blades).
We will most likely never see a CFast module from RED.
But most likely external HDMI/SDI recorders by Atomos or CD.
This will be for the adventurous of us then:)

just pulled the trigger on a deposit after sleeping on it to make sure my impulse feelings expire and i make a rational and sustainable choice.

im super excited, always rent reds but never thought i could afford the luxury of owning one until now :)

Did you get a confirmation email? I preordered the day of but I havent gotten any emails. Im afraid they are trying to reach me via phone but Im overseas atm.

Thanks Jarred! I'll choose one of these 2 options ;)

Just to throw it out there, the Leitax Conversion (same Duclos uses) is amazing as solid as a native ef lens, but you will struggle with some metabones adapters if you want to use the glass on other cameras as Jarred said...

I can tell you with all confidence that the Raven EF mount is one of the best if not the best EF mount ever made. From an mechanical standpoint, it really is phenomenal.

But the lock ring on my Canon Ti mount looks cooler though ;)

Included in the Raven Base I/O Package, what are these?

- DSMC² Base I/O V-Lock Expander
- DSMC² Universal Handle

These are new no? Pictures, announcements, price?

The majority of all cinema lens released in the last few years come in a EF mount version.. From the low end to the very high end, and all of these have de-clicked irises with no clicks so you would just do it like you do.

Alot of people keep are asking our reps if they only are allowed to use Canon branded lenses ... Im not sure where that misunderstanding comes from but you don't.. there are actually far more non-Canon lenses made that use the Canon EF mount than actual Canon brand glass.

I also saw a few questions about the quality of the EF mount on the Raven, and I can tell you with all confidence that the Raven EF mount is one of the best if not the best EF mount ever made. From an mechanical standpoint, it really is phenomenal.

thank you, i understand ALL of that, but i guess you misunderstood, im just asking HOW do you change the iris on a canon still lens when there is no manual control on the lens?

It's pretty simple, you either use the touchscreen menu for aperture, or use a sidehandle wheel doing the same, or do that from your iOS device with foolcontrol.

You can do that during rolling no problem with that.

The most run'n'gun approach will be the new sidehandle of course.

ah, ok, side handle…check.
i wonder if it will click into stops or roll through smoothly.

It depends on the lens itself, for instance Canon 24-70 v1 aperture is hard clicked so it clicks, the v2 on the other hand is smooth, so it closes and opens gradually.

There is also a +/- rocker on the old sidehandle right under your thumb that is assigned to open/close iris by default, using this you don't even have to open menus.

Changing F-Stop on canon lenses with the RED Touch screen or Fool control is VERY easy. Once you get used to the interface and menus it is very easy to adjust Shutter speed, frame rate, compression settings, and so on. People REALLY need to try Fool Control if you haven't.. GAME CHANGER guys.

Can change on camera touch screen, via programmable keys on upcoming side handle, side keys on monitor...
Or on iOS using foolcontrol as shown in this short video by Andy Mcload :

sigma has a great line up .... for example the SIGMA Art 24mm 1.4 ... is absolutely lovely ... before, the 18-35mm 1.8 lived pretty much standard on the epics ... currently playing with the 10-20mm 3.5 on the gimbal ... (vignettes at 10mm@6k, but works great slightly closer ...

plenty of great choices in the EF world ...

Wait hold on. I dont see this on the tech specs so can you clarify? 4K HDRX up to 60fps on the Raven? I saw that it has HDRX but i did not see the frame rates limit.

HDRx is exactly twice the data stream of normal so, if it can normally shoot 120 fps, it'll do 60 fps with HRDx.

Heh heh, if I leave you all alone together for too long you guy start getting in fist fights with each other :)

I'm so stupid your humorous comments make me buy RED cameras more than actual specs

Agree. I hope the decission on going EF will make RED focus on making more (Sigma) glass play nice with RCP. It could really be a fantastic ecosystem.

I would rather pay a LITTLE more if we could get a 240 GB Mini MAG insted of a 120.. My feeling is that we shoot a lot with Epic Dragons, my close friend is getting his weapon soon. the 120GB card looks great for Raven, heck you can prob shoot most of the day on one, but i KNOW a 240GB would handle the whole day at 4k, and would be useful on productions with our other cameras, the 120GB would be kinda silly in a weapon...

I ordered the base I/O package.. maybe $200-$400 more for a 240GB card insted of a 120Gb??
