Any estimates on when the Anamorphic mode will be enabled on the Scarlet?

Here's a grab from my friends Scarlet as we were testing some other features and I had my lens kit with me so I quickly slapped on a lens and just filmed 4k....can't wait for the mode to be working and shoot some "real" footage.

Lomo 80mm Square Front T4

Looks great! Can't wait to use my square fronts on Scarlet!

Just anxious as my lens kit just got overhauled and would like to do some shooting soon in 4K ANA

I think it's the same as 4.5k; they don't want to impede Epic sales.Has there ever been any mention of ANA modes for Scarlet?

Jarred at some point said ana wasn't out of the question. Ive worked with kips ana's they are great and would love to give my scarlet a reason to put the pl mount back on it. Hopefully RED will get around to throwing us an anamorphic bone... if not it will be render heavy for us scarlet guys when we decide we need some flares in our edit ha. I am sure if we all ask for it long enough Mr. Jannard, and ole Jarred will give us what we want, and a bit o grief in a comedic manner for being a pain in their ass.

I don't see it as really stepping on Epic toes. You still can't do full res HDRx and slow-motion like Epic. Also I don't see Red limiting the cameras like that on purpose doesn't really seem like their style. Also I'm sure it would help them sell more PL mounts since you can't really get that anamorphic look with canon mount glass.

Lovely pict of you Ryan.... I'm just trying to let the developers at Red know there are people out there who would love to shoot anamorphic on the Scarlet.

I am in the boat with you... would love to see this in a upcoming firmware, cause the current workflow for it is cringe inducing.

Isn't in-camera support for anamorphic lenses just about some meta-data and a matching preview/playback-mode to view it in right aspect ratio on lcd/evf? What ales is needed? I hope RED gives us that, it wouldn't eat up EPIC's ground, but it would add another pro against the competition.

I hope Zeiss' new anamorphic lenses will come in one of their more affordable lines, not just as (anamorphic) master primes. ;)

The new Zeiss Anamorphics are (according to reports) $20K plus per prime.

Also, they're mid barrel types... so no flares or crazy abberations (etc). They'll be very clean. You'll probably have to use a front streak filter as with the Hawks.

20k, hmm, yeah, i feared that, thanks for killing my hopes. ;)
So what are good and affordable anamorphic lenses? Anything else besides the LOMOs? And what LOMOs are actually good?

Sorry! http://matthewduclos.wordpress.com/2012/04/19/zeiss-goes-anamorphic/

It depends what you mean as affordable?

Lomos are rocketing in price at the moment. Lomos are good and bad - as with all older lenses you'll get some in great shape and some real lemons. Problem is, bad ones will often cost so much to repair (if it's possible) that they don't end up cost effective.

Lomos were the cheapest 'real' anamorphics, but now they're in league with other anamorphics... so they're becoming a style choice.

Anamorphic lenses for anything more (or less) than a style choice will be (or already are) dead as a needed process to create wide screen deliverables.
Digital cinema projectors are not using "de squeeze" lenses..there's absolutely NO NEED for them as we have removed the constraints originally imposed by the physical 35mm frame aspect ratio.
Please discuss WHY anyone is investing in these old technologies, when the few and far between projects that might call for a anamorphic flare or "mythical creamy look" can be best served by a flare filter on-camera, a post filter or a rental set as a last resort.

As i said in my post above - style choice :) I agree with you on that.

Movies are still shooting anamorphic (I'm sure Panavision make a killing on rentals) & that's a style choice again... be it Director or DP (can't see a Producer wanting Ana - LOL).

Anas aren't just about the flares (I hate seeing them now - one more MTV video that's spherical with lots of video co-pilot slapped on & I'll scream!) - it's the cream (as you say) but also the ovular bokeh... and (probably most overlooked) is the nature of the vertical vs horizontal FOV. Whilst this can be attained with some careful framing on a spherical, a 35mm Ana is vertical 35mm and horizontal 17.5mm, but a spherical is 35mm in H/V FOV. So the H/V FOV split gives for some interesting framing opportunities... especially in 'Epic' (scale - not camera! :) terms.

But you're right in the fact that, as we move to digital projection & delivery (etc), the anamorphic projection method seems like it's old hat.

As feared... Ok, stuff to rent then. ;)

It depends what you mean as affordable?
Well, when speaking of Zeiss-lenses, my league is more in the range of their CP.2 and ZE/ZF-lines.

Yeah, i had that feeling about their prices going up, did look around a long time ago and i'm sure they where cheaper back then....

Eh... I don't think you know too much about lenses and what they do to an image. 2:1 anamorphic lenses changes the characteristics of an image completely, and it can not be faked in post. You can not fake a lens. However you can emulate a look of a lens by putting on a post filter, but it looks like a post filter, so why the hell would you do it? It can be compared to music and sound. Different instruments sound different, and yes, you could emulate it on a keyboard, but it's still a ****ing keyboard - so unless you want the sound of digital emulation instrument, use the real deal.

Any estimates on when the Anamorphic mode will be enabled on the Scarlet?

I absolutely sincerely hope that Anamorphic mode will be exclusive to the Epic. These cameras need to be/stay differentiated. And I speak as both a Scarlet and an Epic owner.
