  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

ANAMORPHIC MODE...WHEN WILL IT BE ENABLED

Why do some EPIC owners have so much fear when Scarlet-users have some feature requests? ;) I mean, we have to differentiate between realistic features and some dreamers that want nearly an EPIC coming out of their Scarlet with the next free firmware-upgrade. The later won't be happening anyway, we all know that and it's fine. But anamorphic mode is an example for a realistic request i think. It wouldn't eat up anything from EPIC's piece of cake, EPIC is still so much superior. Even if Scarlet gets 4kANA, EPIC does it in 5k with higher fps... Should i mention that shooting ANA is already possible with Scarlet, it just needs workarounds and it's a bit strange to look at stretched pictures, but it's doable.

And don't forget, Scarlet needs to be/stay differentiated from the competition, which gets hotter... ;)

Whatever RED decides on this matter, i don't think they'll upset EPIC-owners by giving Scarlet a few more features here and there.

Cannabalising rentals and devaluing the price to feature value ratio and lessening the EPIC's over all perceived worth I guess. I can understand that, people are always going to be concerned with protecting what they have worked hard to build/own. But I don't see that anyone has anything to fear as RED's in control and not going to screw anyone over - subsequently I found the "votes' against Scarlet having a burst mode a bit of a laugh.

I've said it before that even when they gave Scarlet it's promised 120 1K, Epic got an unexpected trumped update. I'm sure if Scarlet got a burst mode they would again give Epic an even more powerful upgrade. So there's nothing to fear. I guess you can't give a more powerful Ana though :) But I agree, the image quality of EPIC goes well beyond an ana mode or a few more FPS in a burst mode or the like.

Anyhow, Scarlet owners who may not have invested as much in RED financially, have still spent not a small amount of money buying a RED system, and where reasonable, should be allowed to hope for a few advanced features without being deemed as greedy or needing to be put in their place. But i would also say that I have read many Scarlet users asking for 5K 24fps, which to me does seem a lot like asking for a Scarlepic.

But - anamorphic lenses is extremely rare - and awfully expensive! Why would anyone need this function on the Scarlet? With more anamorphic cameras, the lenses would be even more expensive - due to higher demand, maybe 10-15 times the price of a Scarlet - just for a set of 40 year olds...

If I invest in anamorphic lenses, it will give my Epic a lot of extra value.

Think ARRI ALEXA STUDIO versus ARRI ALEXA.

Some features should not be enabled on the cheap camera. It's bad for business. Red has already been extremely generous selling a strip down Epic for peanuts...

Depends... LOMO is still relatively cheap. But as noted, they've already seen a price-jump.
Higher demand can result in higher prices, on short term it will for sure, but the same high demand could result in new lenses coming out. Cheap Samyang/Walimex maybe or a Zeiss CP.A-line? Yeah, a bit dreaming is involved here. :)

There is still the renting business...

It just would be nice to have it and there aren't technical limits that prevent RED from enabling it on Scarlet, at least they're not obvious.

Sure, as soon as there is enough budget to get highend anamorphic glass there will be an EPIC here. :)

Think ARRI ALEXA STUDIO versus ARRI ALEXA.
I don't think about ARRI Cameras anymore. ;)

Yup, i partially agree with that. I still see Scarlet as a gift, RED gave me the chance to step up to professional gear for price that was simply unthinkable before, i'm not going to forget that. I've also realized that making Scarlet and finding it's place on the market must be a really hard task. There is EPIC and R1MX, and they must/should protect them, i'm fine with that, but there is also the competition, soon they've to protect Scarlet too. ;)

But i think it has been clearly said that Scarlet's only limitations are in form of resolution and frame-rate, not features. In my opinion ANA doesn't lift the specs, it just allows working with more glass.

Ana, HDRX & 5K were the features that ended up pushing me towards Epic.

Maybe RED are holding back on Ana as it's a feature set of the RED ONE - and that's more expensive than the Scarlet.

So (just thinking out loud here) maybe RED see their line up as Epic - RED ONE - Scarlet?

The Scarlet being the cheaper camera as it's a 'bonus' made from the Epic production line and therefore at a cheaper price point (but still very cool 4K :).

You'll probably get Ana on Scarlet when the ONE gets retired... or maybe if another camera manufacturer adds the feature and RED reacts (less likely).

The ability to shoot anamorphic was certainly a pillar of my choosing to buy a Scarlet. I would still have bought it, but I had plans for it that may never come to fruition now. It was on the specs, it's not here. I'm waiting patiently, but I'm dying to shoot with some Hawks or something...

There's an image grab somewhere of the Scarlet specs - I remember that it was 'compatible' with Anamorphic lenses... but it didn't say anything about a specific Ana mode in it's formats list (if memory serves).

This mention of Anamorphic glass was then removed and the wording changed.

I'm sure there's a thread with the old & new (November '11) grabs... just need to find it :)

That's why I ended up on the Epic route, as it seemed Ana on the Scarlet wasn't coming.

Don't worry it's already stripped down and stripped. You see the real strip is the 6:1 compression and not 3:1. They told me that you can't see the difference. My thought then is, then why not have the Epic at 6:1 as well and save some money on a less expensive chip set. They could have at least given the Scarlet one professional setup in 24fps. The ARRI 2C was a ghetto camera but in 24fps the registration was fantastic; they didn't make it worse because they were trying to sell more BL1's... don't get myself. I know it sounds like apples and oranges but that was about all those cameras could do back in the day so it was a very big deal, besides being blimped!
So what I guess I'm saying is this... having 3:1 compression in 24fps would not have spoiled any barrel of Epic apples. Digital cameras have a short life cycle, lets say compared to an ARRI 2C, that are still working from just after WW2. Well, while I'm on this kick I should say that having an entry level camera it should at least give you 3:1 @24 fps @4k as advertised, being 99 44/100's % of all movies are 24 fps! SLOMO's so over used because of boring scripts, trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear!
How do they get away with selling a camera that does 4k when in fact it does not??? The end result is what you add up not, not the journey!
just a little venting

6:1 is fine, it really is. 3:1 will make files bigger and maybe give VFX-artists more data to play with, but under normal circumstances 6:1 is really good enough. I mostly use 8:1. Shooting 3:1 could be interesting for stills, i havn't done much testing here, but it's possible too shoot 5k stills @ 3:1 with Scarlet. You still get 8fps then (and 12fps with 5:1).

BTW, 6:1 is already a bit better than what a RED One can do (REDCODE 42 is somewhere between 7:1 and 8:1) and lots of features have been shot with on RED ONEs. Speaking of feature films, from what you can read here in the forum, lots of them use ratios between 5:1 and 8:1. So calling 6:1 not professional and Scarlet not being able to shoot 4k is just not right.

Im doing lens tests tomorrow with the Scarlet, latest firmware, with Lomo anamorphic lenses.
Ryan - you just used the 4k setting and squeezed it in post? Did you have any kind of problems with the material? Pixel ratios or weirdness with flairs, rendering?
Im shooting a short and would have loved to do it anamorphic so the tests will decide if it will be worth it.

Fredrikolsson... I am still in the boat of not finding a suitable workflow that does not require alot of rendering. Hopefully in the near future we will get it in firmware. Hate to be the bearer of bad news.

Companies that spend a lot of time worrying about cannibalizing their products usually don't have to worry for very long since someone will go ahead and do it for them. Usually their competition. I can imagine the meeting at Apple... "Who's going to buy an iPod if you put all the same functions into an iPhone". It's generally a pretty myopic business decision.

I'm the first person to scream for an ana mode on Scarlet however it doesn't require a whole lot of rendering for results. I'm working on a piece in Premiere Pro cs6 set up as a RED default changed to 1828x1556 with a 2x pixel aspect ratio. On import of video I adjust the aspect ratio and scale footage to the frame height. The video consists of quadHD and 3kHD- just make sure you are framing for a 4:3 overlay guide. The main problem with this is that we lose so much screen real estate which becomes cropped- ana mode would fix this and by some calculations would allow for 5k- I'd just love 4K anamorphic mode for starters. This all runs realtime 1/4 res preview on an iMac with multiple layers/grain etc- faster than my main quadro xeon mac pro tower.

Some stills- some cropped to 2.35 and some straight 2x...

I notice that no one from RED is taking part of this thread ...
I have to say (and i'm so sad to ay it) that i regret my choice of SCARLET. I hope i'll change my mind in a near future.
I need to rent my camera to pay the lease. I was making lot more money with my MX ! Why i sold it ??!!

I love the Scarlet but it really need ANA and 120 fps (or 100 at least)

cheers

I hope we'll be full of happiness with the Dragon Upgrade.
Problem is we don't know nothing about.

Do i have to start saving to pay it ?
Will it be quick ? (remember MX upgrade...)
again i love RED, so i don't want to be forced to change system because of my clients...

Just a post to say I'd love it if you'd engage a ANA mode on the Scarlett...5 or 4K.

My lenses await the modification
