  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

ANAMORPHIC MODE...WHEN WILL IT BE ENABLED

Just a post to say I'd love it if you'd engage a ANA mode on the Scarlett...5 or 4K.

My lenses await the modification

Would love to hear if it's gonna make its way to my camera. My camera awaits the update... As well as your lenses kip

Scarlet should be able to shoot 5k ana... at 24p. Since the image size is quite close to 4k.. Then maybe it can not do the 2x squeeze but I think a lot of scarlet users would love to shoot at the 1:2.40 without having a proper picture to monitor. Feels wrong to hold the camera back just to differentiate it from epic.

Looks like I'll be shooting a music video with anamorphic glass in about six weeks; the post workflows don't really bother me, but explaining to everyone on set why we can't have proper monitoring is gonna be tedious... (not to mention framing the shots)

My post was not to start a debate about Epic Vs Scarlett.....It's simply to let those at Red know that an ANA mode would be useful and welcome.

in my opinion its very useful in times which you may have a scarlet as your b camera on an anamorphic shoot. That may be a rare thing... but it sure would be better to have scarlet as B on anamorphic shoot than a gh2 or something like that. Im with Kip though not starting a flame war or a debate just letting the powers that be know it would be extremely useful. I often rent an epic as an A cam and have my scarlet as a B, but have avoided shooting any anamorphic on it due to work flow issues.

In order to simplify this request into a minimal "need", if I had 4:3 at 4k(i.e. 2880x2160) with rc4:1, I think i can do everything else I need in post processing(i.e. poor man's ana mode). My problem is cropping 4kHD i'm at RC6:1 and am seeing wavelet artifacts in post. There's really no workaround on the scarlet when shooting at 4:3 or bellow due to these artifacts(aside from doing some qubic smoothing which takes a lot of care). Seems like the wavelet compression error is more noticable due to having less pixels to work with at 2880 pixels.

did a commercial with Ana Lomos since the director requested them and wanted mad flares.

Went with Epic due to Ana feature, would be great to have it on a Scarlet.

Hate to beat a dead horse but with the new price reduction and no anamorphic mode on the Scarlet I am interested in Red One MX BT for anamorphic. What is the actual resolution for this mode (is it verticly more than 4KHD) and can anyone recommend some examples- films or online? I would much rather shoot with the form factor of the Scarlet but i'm not convinced we will see it in a firmware upgrade and I cant wait. Epic rental is an option, but a dedicated anamorphic camera would be great for the new price.

Found my answer... the Red One MX has an anamorphic mode with 144 more vertical pixels than the Scarlet in 4K/4KHD. Still interested in seeing some good anamorphic red one mx examples.

Lots on vimeo... search lomo anamorphic red

These are all ones I like :)

The above are Red One MX - you'll obviously get Epic stuff in that search string too... so there's a bit of 'wading' to be done :)

Something I also notice since the 'big slice' is that (on the specs of the Epic over at Red.com) it lists 4K,3K & 2K Ana modes... I'm a few updates behind on my Epic (I'm working away on another project and a different camera), but it seems I missed an upgrade that enabled these (or maybe it is to come?) - as 5K Ana was the only mode I had.

Agree that a Red One MX certainly looks like a a solution.

Thanks Andy, much rather shoot with the form factor of the scarlet and for VFX elements to match to Epic or Alexa shots it is perfect. But the red one MX might be great for an anamorphic cam for a project late this year. I'm really not expecting a firmware ana mode enabled by then.

Excuse my ignorance, but what do you guys mean by saying that you can't shoot anamorphic on the Scarlet? Couldn't you just put anamorphic lenses on them and then squeeze the image in post? I ask because I'm a big fan of anamorphic shooting, even if I only use adapters for now (I've shot two shorts with 5Ds using the Panasonic LA7200 anamorphic 1.33 squeezes and they came out nice, I'm excited to try it out on the Scarlet as the test footage I've seen with them together has looked awesome).

James, yes, that is the current process with Scarlet. Epic and Red one MX have anamorphic modes at the correct ratio and utilize more vertical space of the sensor.

Wow... so you're saying you can shoot anamorphically without anamorphic lenses? But is that really "anamorphic" when you think about it? When I think anamorphic, I think of singular sets of distortion, lens flares, and color texture just as much as the aspect ratio. Or can it simulate those somehow as well?

No, he's saying you don't have to crop to get the proper image out of anamorphic glass... If anything it acts more like traditional anamorphic capture. Just desqueeze and go (not desqueeze to 3.5:1 and then crop to 2.4:1, which is a lot of wasted resolution.)
