  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

ANAMORPHIC MODE...WHEN WILL IT BE ENABLED

I'm still confused, Mike. I'm not that well versed in traditional anamorphic capture, just from what I've read about modern anamorphic shooting. What do you mean about "desqueeze"? I'm thinking you might actually be saying what I was and I was just saying it wrong; I mean that when you shoot at, say, a 1.5 squeeze on the lens, you have to thus compress it in post. Would that be desqueezing? Did they not have to squeeze anamorphic footage before digital editing? I always thought the glass itself stretched the footage and you had to thus squeeze it in post (though, now that I think about it, I'm not sure how they could have done that back in the Leone days without digital means).

I understand what you mean about losing resolution though. That's why I preferred to use the Panasonic LG7200 for dslr anamorphic shooting because it does a 1.33 squeeze and thus the compression gives it a nice 2.35:1 in post without any resolution lost (you don't have to crop, in other words). In this sense, why would you need the camera to do this for you? I think that's where I'm confused. Would you still need anamorphic lenses to shoot "anamorphic" in this case?

I'm worried none of that made sense.

The Scarlet works like a DSLR - in that there is no 'Ana' mode. You shoot, your images are really over stretched (as you are shooting on a 16:9 sensor rather than 4:3) and then you have to squeeze the image in post (resulting in the super extreme 'slit/pillar' box effect that's used in a lot of pop promos now). To get it back to a more normal 2:35:1 (or similar) you then zoom/crop the image.

Now, shooting 4K on a Scarlet gives you a lot more headroom in pixels than shooting on a DSLR (ie DSLR is 1920X1080, so when you zoom in, you're loosing a lot of quality).

The Ana mode on the Epic and Red One performs all of this for you. You get to see the correct aspect ratio when shooting and the post is simple, as your footage is ready to go - no cropping/zooming or post.

Think of the Ana mode as a window on the sensor, but a window created for Anamorphic shooting. Movies like the new Total Recall shot Epic and 5K Ana.

Obviously, in order to use Anamorphic mode correctly, you must use Ana lenses (2X).

If you are using any other squeeze (1.33), tha Ana mode on the Epic/Red won't hep much as it's deigned for 2X.

Edit/Note - in the Dark Days of pre-digital (a time that I am from ;) -when you shot Ana, it would stay as Ana through the 'optical' post production process (yes - even editing, where we spliced bits of film together!)... then, when the distribution print (or any other) was made, the cinema projects the film through another anamorphic lens... this corrects the image you're seeing on the big screen.

Have a look at this - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anamorphic_format

Thank you kindly, Mr. White. THat was as eloquent and enlightening a description as I could have ever asked for.

On that note, I would love to have this on my Scarlet as well.

Hi James - no problem :)

I get a feeling that RED may keep Ana mode on the Epic... but, with the recent slashing of prices, who knows what they'll do.

Best

Just another post asking for an ANA mode update for the Scarlet

Thanks

Bump

Not asking for a upgrade or new sensor...just the same capabilities as the Red One 4k 3k 2k

Please

I think this and 4.5k have been asked for since the beginning of Scarlet-X (maybe even assumed), but I'm not sure if they were ever really on the table. It's definitely a hard pill to swallow though, what with R1 having it and all.

It doesn't hurt the keep asking. I'd rather have it than the proposed 4k pseudo-HDRx (is that still on the table?)...

Agreed. I just did some 5k(12fps) vs 4k(24fps) comparisons today on the Scarlet with the square fronts. Is this a reasonable request??? I think most things like this will get left in the dust with the focus being on Dragon.

I hope scarlet does not get left in the dust or else the scarlet just seems like a misfire on reds part. This is a badass camera and if a couple things were implemented... 4k48fps, 4kHDRx, and this thing could be a staple of UHD production as well as indie film production for years to come. Giving it ANA mode would let it be a sweet little crash cam for bigger dragon productions as well. Hopefully we can get some of those features... Seems as if its not out side of the realm of possibility. They then have their UHD cam and their proper high end cinema cam. 4k and 6k delivery

(though, now that I think about it, I'm not sure how they could have done that back in the Leone days without digital means).

The Sergio Leone films were Techniscope and not Anamorphic, so they weren't shot with Anamorphic lenses at all.
