  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Am I the only one seeing extreme banding in Bomb EVF? (Oled version)

I've been trying to ignore it when workin with it, waiting for a firmware fix of some kind. But now I´m starting to think, that I´m the only one experiencing this problem, as noone else is complaining. Welll....someone has to get angry, so I will! :)

Problem is banding in the shadows of the Bomb EVF Oled. Exreme bandin just before the blacks clip. Kinda pinkish sometimes, like there's a hard curve adjustment right at the bottom.

Am I the only one? Should I send in for repairs? Or do we have to live with this?

Yup I get the exact same thing on my OLED EVF-- shadows go from black to magenta to a much lighter gray where there should be a smooth dark gradient. As others have noted, colors are far too warm. It really makes it impossible to judge the lighting through the EVF. This is by far my biggest issue with an otherwise phenomenal camera, really hope a fix is in the works.

Was it always there, or has it changed with a Firmware update?

for me it was there as soon as we received the upgraded OLED, early june last year.
Overall image has much much more contrast and eye comfort is improved over LCOS version but the black are quite crushed.
Hope one day the camera FW will allow to adjust EVF color setting without changing the clip metadatas.

Ok. Comforting to know, that I´m not the only one.

Have none of you contacted Red Support about this - it doesn't sound like they are working correctly based on other Reduser's reports.

Myself and a couple other RED shooters have been looking into this. Inquiries to RED seem to turn up nothing. I wanted to grab on to Graeme at NAB, but he wasn't there. Every time I saw Jim there seemed to be a line of people wanting to introduce themselves and shake hands. Jarred seemed busy as usual and I only talked to him for about 30 seconds, totally slipped my mind at the time. Along with a few other questions that I have looming.

I know a couple people who have filed trouble tickets and sent in their EVFs, only to be told they operate properly. One also sent in their camera to be told the same thing. And perhaps this is operating within spec as they all seem to do it, but it is an annoyance. Anyway, Here's some observations I've made with this:

* Banding / solarization appears in shadows, mostly follows noise on under-exposed areas.

* Does not have to be related to warm tones. With a cool white balance and blue shadows it's there too. It's more prevalent in warm light, due to the sensor's affinity to full spectrum lighting.

* Does not present itself on the monitor or in the non-OLED version of the EVF.

* Appears to not be an issue with the OLED itself, I'm betting it's an anomaly with the image scaling algorithm(s) used.

* Relating to above algorithm thought, the effect lessens when shooting at lower resolutions -- not as harsh when viewing 4K, less so with 3K, even less so with 2K...

* Effect is non-existent in 1:1 zoom mode.

* So, yeah, I'm thinking color space transformation along with scaling for the OLED is causing it. Hopefully it can be fixed.

Anyone at Red, anyone out there, please focus on the color problem, before the banding problem!

The warmth is what kills me--shooting dimmed tungsten lighting everyone looks like carrots.

I don't expect to be able to judge exposure or color through an EVF.

But the eyepiece is our way of seeing the film's world unfold. If you get used to seeing it quite warm, it throws off your eye when you pull away, try to decide which grade of straw you like, check the reference monitor, back to the EVF, AHHHHH, the difference is bonkers.

The banding doesn't bother me--lots of viewfinders band--it's kind of like a false color that's always on. If you see banding, it's dark as ****, good to know.

Just unboxed my new OLED EVF, very warm tones. Thought it was a particular issue but now I am reading your posts on this thread...are ALL of the OLEDs leaning towards warm tones or is it just a batch?

After reading this thread, Im going to delete my OLED from the wish list till further notice.

Perhaps quotes like this will get us a firmware update. Anyone, anyone from Red reading this?

People send their viewfinder in and are told nothing is wrong... and yet.

DPs with much bigger names than mine are pulling their head away from the eyepiece asking me "hey why's it so damn warm in there?"

Put the camera into Luma Ramp Test mode and check the shift in warmth/tint across the screen, and then look at the dark area on the left. Compare the banding to another monitor. even one worth just ta few hundred bucks..
Notice how thick the band of black is, on the left of the image. It takes a few seconds to realize that most of that black is supposed to be shades of gray.

All of this is within RED's spec.

Exact same situation happened numerous time here :-(

I've been posting about this for a year now. Glad to see we have some folks on board, finally. I've had my OLED to Red and they replaced it with a new one....exactly the same "can't be trusted" images. All we really need is user adjustment of contrast, gamma, and brightness to make it look as it does through the SDI feed. Then everyone on set is looking at the same image. Please Red, the EVF is crucial to the process......

+1
I was about to ask for the oled upgrade, now I think I will wait for a fix on this issue....Let's hope for a new EVF with a bigger magnification.
