  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Am I the only one seeing extreme banding in Bomb EVF? (Oled version)

+1
I was about to ask for the oled upgrade, now I think I will wait for a fix on this issue....Let's hope for a new EVF with a bigger magnification.

Im used to the LCOS with work RED MX.
Is it that much different in viewing with the OLED?
I find the LCOS im squinting a lot due to my bad eyes :(

Given that the EVF doesn't display the full dynamic range of the MX sensor (crushed shadows), I wonder how it will cope with the Dragon.

I smell a BOMB PLUS ;)

With all the know how Red has displayed over the years it seems in comprehendible that they can't build a EVF that works. Very frustrating to use Alexa and Sony F55 and have the EVF be as good as they are. Being "all in" with Red it pisses me off. Please Red Team make it right!

A silly qestion I guess but - has anyone tried a workaround in the meantime of getting hold of a pad of Lee filter samples and trying blue gels of different powers and maybe an added faint green to counter the magenta, finding a satisfactory combination, cutting small circular gels out of the sheets and fitting them in the eyepiece. Just a thought.

The P+S Technik SI2K OLED finder is a bit older than the RED OLED. It is fed vision signal off the VGA port ( computer ). It draws power from a separate source. It has three adjustment buttons on the rear. In combinations they offer control of contrast, brightness and hues.

There is apparent, a granular streaking artifact associated with noisy blacks when the exposure is allowed to drift low. It is a good intuitive warning.

I don't know the means by which RED sends image to their OLED. I imagine it may be something technically different. If it is the same standard, a hack of the controllable P+S finder might be worth examining.

Robert,
Love the thinking of these "work-a-rounds" but I would think the Epic eco-system is mature enough to support a properly working EVF. Pretty basic stuff for a top of the line digital cinema camera system. It surprises me that there's no Red Team comments on any threads pertaining to the OLED.

A lot of us were waiting for the fix for the original Bomb EVF, it never worked properly. (We also waited for it for a year after putting a deposit down).
Instead of a fix, they came out with a new OLED version few months later, which was AMAZING!

Except it's apparently not.

The Epic eco-system may be mature enough but RED may not be a big enough outfit to put out all the spot fires at the same time and progress the core product against some serious competition.

I don't dispute any fit for purpose issue that might be argued but if a workaround in the meantime offers a little user-comfort, why not.

Two small disks of Lee gel in the eyepiece loupe, even issued as a user-install kit from RED in a little paper bag, should not be too scurvey a fix to consider. I understand there was also a LUT workaround published by a well-reputed user.

As an entrepeneur, I have failed. I should have been touting a cure for the OLEDs, getting them sent to me, punching out two gel disks, bunging them in under the dioper or inside on top of the display chip along with little spacers to avoid newtonian rings and sending them back "cured" for a handsome profit. Alas, I never did have a business sense which is why I am a poor bugga I guess.

A gel can't fix the problems.
You should probably try that solution before you endorse it.

Also, a quality monitor is of much more importance than any other peripheral module or accessory. Should be done right first time.
No excuses!

But why where the initial reports from NAB 2012 so overwhelmingly good? Where those different EVF's? Or where those guys blinded by the warmness/niceness of the hue? :)

Someone mentioned, that it looked like watching through an optical viewfinder....I mean...it was better than the old one....but come on.

I remember the same being said about the original Bomb EVF. That's why so many people pre-ordered it.

Mark.

I read into your reply that you are being a little bit terse with me. However good DoPs also don't waste their own or anyone else's time with strokes, platitudes or less than clear communication. - I guess I won't get a gig as your camera assistant then.

"A gel can't fix the problems". --- just a hopefully helpful suggestion was made, that's all.

"Why don't you try it before you endorse it". --- I think you may have misread my comment. I do not think I actually endorsed the product. - If I was so burdened with one, I would try it. Alas, without one, I can only make what I would like to think are helpful suggestions and speculate.

My only way to slide out from under is to ask you to prove a negative, maybe grab your Lee Designers Edition or one from your lighting guy. Swing out a piece of Lee 203 Quarter CT Blue, or Lee 218 Eighth CT Blue or maybe 278 Eighth Plus Green if the hue is magenta and peer through them into the eyepiece. Take care not to poke a corner in your eye. I did when using them for impro 3D anaglyph glasses.

"Also, a quality monitor is of much more importance than any other peripheral module or accessory. Should be done right first time." --- A true valid argument that I don't dispute with you one bit.

There are no excuses if the finder was avowed, declared and vended as a professional product. If the product was released with a loose "look what a great new finder we have for you" statement with no actual benchmark claims, then that's it, you get an electronic viewfinder, warts, pinklook and all. The Australian Trade Practices Act might have something to say if claims of performance for a product are made by a vendor which are not met.

As the product is vended direct by the manufacturer from the US, that's it.

The OLED EVF on display at the Red Store Hollywood ( plugged into a PRO I/O, with an LCD also on the camera) looks like crap, IMHO.
Please, can someone from Red please take a look at it, then report back here whether they think the image is up to spec. That it is up to the professional level that Red aspires to?

Thanks.

Mark, I've checked out that same OLED at the Red Store and completely agree!

I can see the fact that Red may have "all hands on deck" to deal with releasing Dragon. But after that gets done, I would think it prudent to address the EVF, IMO.

No excuses for time delays, IMHO.
People shouldn't have to work with it in its current state, impeding the ability to get the best images from the camera, in a real world setting. It shouldn't wait for anything.
It's more important than proxy modules, Meizler modules, redmotes, ipad apps, or just anything else. It's basic stuff.

I really want to see this fixed.

I know the cheaper options are probably just as good or better but they are all so big and cumbersome compared to the OLED BOMB.

Unless someone with experience can tell me Im wrong.
