  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Allstar Shoulder -RED handheld rig

Understood, it's just that whatever Allstar makes is likely not to work with the 1030 and it will have to be machined just as you did. Don't know how many 1030 owners are out there who will also buy an Allstar shoulderpad (not that there's anything wrong with it, just hard to calculate) so it can become a losing proposition to make a second version. Mill away.

Whatever, it's clear that if someone like me can do it/get it done, it's not really a big deal. Also doing what I did would not change it's origional design so it would still work with the tripod plate.

I messed with it today. I don't know about anyone else's shoulder, but I can tell you MINE was very level. Also, because I was using the ET plate I was able to slide it fore and aft to get a good balance.

It's true I do not have a super cool handle rig cause I don't want to shell out $125 for a universal mount ($45 yes, $125... No.)

While I get a lot of pro work, I can no longer afford to get a lot of the "big boy" toys. So I will have to be very careful for a few months while things put themselves right again.

I am pleased with the Allstar solution and I am grateful they did it. Had it not been for them, I would have ended up spending $1,000 or more for someone else's solution, and this money is better spent on my children right now.

:)

Hi,Jay
Thank you very much, your information is very useful for me. I`ll improve this on next production. If other people want to use the shoulder on ET dovetail, please ask me about this issue first.

uh, when is the next production likely to happen?
many clients ask for an ARRI style dovetail so i guess i'll have to go for the ET dovetail soon ...

Allstar and 2060?

Allstar and 2060?

The bracket fits to a standard 2060 type dovetail, correct?

So, does it fit the 2060? I'm not concerned about being compatible with the 1030 and if I didn't have to do any filing on the Allstar, I'd rather not.

Don't know -- ask AllStar.

Sorry, it was supposed to be directed at Allstar. :)

I've PM'd him.

Hi, Jim
You need to mount the small plate under the 2060 dovetail first.
After a month, the ARRI dovetail of Allstar shoulder will be available. You can use it on arri base.
And other accessories like handle, extra handle stick, long dovetail plate...will be available at the same time. Of course, in low price.

Hey Allstar,

Are you going to offer a new version of the Allstart Modded for the 1030 since it does not impact your origional design or keep your current plate from working?

Jay

Hi,Jay
It will be work like your arri 1030 dovetail, it can mach arri base and my shoulder pad could be mount on the bottom. The difference is mine will be design for handle shot not for tripod, there will many screw holes on it to monut other rigs and the weight will be light.

Just got mine. Did anyone notice the screws are way too short to screw onto the bottom of the Red? And I can't just get my own screws because the thread near the heads are filed down to accommodate movement along the plate.

Allstar's sending me longer ones but I must be doing something wrong if people are using these successfully.

do you have other plate available ?
like 120mm euro, pana or arri ?

O'connor size is cool but I use a remote head two days ago, and it was 120mm. I wish I'd be able to switch.

btw, your dovetail is great, i recommend it to everyone !

In that case I'll hold off on buying the Mantis. I don't do a lot of handheld but would like to have that option if needed. This sounds like the perfect solution to use with my existing red gear and et arri dove tails and the price is perfect. Great work!

Thank you Bérenger,
New products are manufactured now. The handle, longer plate, arri plate will come out after 3 weeks.

it feels like these soultions dont support those who cant buy the viewfinder :( i tried to go portable with my LCD and RED production base kit and the monitor is on my face literally.. the arm just doesnt go far enough :(

I bought the All-star dovetail and shoulder mount. The dovetail on the Oconnor 1030 works like a dream with the Red bottom plate and it's a quick switch to the shoulder mount. So for quick back and forth from sticks to shoulder, very slick. Of course if you're doing basically a handheld shoot, you might not want to carry the dovetail, but you have that option.

Allstar service was fast, first rate communication. If you're on a budget, I doubt you'll find a better system -- but that is not to say that Allstar is budget gear. Very solid.

Get a Manfrotto Nano Clamp and you'll be able to place the LCD wherever you want on the rods. It's a must have if you're going hand held with the LCD.

The price is perfect for you but the products aren't really comparable. The Mantis is completely adjustable to the operator and its quality is far superior to anything else out there. (I am not saying AllStar lacks quality or produces inferior products.)

I would say apart from hand holding the matte box or the Mantis, there isn't a hand held solution out there worth its cost.

If you're not doing a lot of hand held (and won't be), the Mantis is probably too much as far as cost. But once you use it (provided you like handled hand held) you will not go back to any other way.
