But is it customizable to the operator?

Looks like it levels the camera but not to the individual shooter...

Other concern is the actual mount. Doesn't look strong enough, nor practical if going from hand held to an O'Connor head...

Please correct where I'm mistaken...

I`ll show it on wedside,or you can see this first:

Hi Allstar

Thanks for all your new products. The shoulder mount looks interesting, but just a little high for an already tall camera, which is why I actually like Red's shoulder mount! Instead of bolting to your dovetail, why not have a direct dovetail connection to the Red bottom plate like your dovetail. That might also give you room to make some adjustment mechanism for the angle rather than the current fixed one? Just an idea...

If I bought the dovetail with the shim, but decided in the end to not to buy an O'Connor 1030 head, can I also remove the shim myself and use the existing screws/bolts, or would I need to get shorter screws (what size are they)?

Cheers!
Eric

It rises 3cm high.(You shouldn`t look the longer side).Try it, you`ll forget Red's shoulder mount.
If I make it can fill RED bottom plate(like Allstar dovetail plate),it`ll not only be price at $400,because should increase lock system, and only can work on RED bottom plate. If you want solid and lower price, you need abandon adjustment mechanism, the mechanism isn`t very necessary.
It is very strong enough for a handheld rig, people will feel that after using it.

Hi,Eric Those shorter screws always ship with O`connor type that you can disassemble the shim by yourself.

Have got ALLSTAR shoulder pad and experimenting with the lightest set up.

R1, EVF, battery, RED Drive, ALLSTAR shoulder pad and the fastest+lightest(400gr) lens Canon FD L 50mm f/1.2.

Works well.

More info to come.

Stay tuned.

Yes, please let us know how it performs Sanjic - thanks for being the pioneer. Particularly I would be interested in your views in relation to balance and ergonomics.

It does look well made.

Notice how the viewfinder is pointing down. That's because the camera's too high. It means you're facing up towards the ceiling when you're shooting, and if you're walking over tricky ground, you or the camera could...die.
Not the best, but I see lots of photos with this problem on Reduser, including Steve Gibby's first pics of the ET shoulder mount in action, which had the lens way above eye height, from memory.
I'm not saying the viewfinder can't be positioned lower, but it seems often it isn't.
I'm yet to see a solution that can get the viewfinder in close enough to the body for my right eye's liking ( I've seen shots where the operator's head is tilted off to the left to get there), and low enough to work high on the shoulder like this.

The height of the lens in this shot of the ET rig is good - right on eye height, but because the thread on the EVF is off to the left of the EVF, and the mount needs all that extra metal for adjustment... you can see the result.
Arthritis in the neck.

ALLSTAR shoulder pad works pretty well.

I've just got back from a short night shooting at Vienna city center.

Pad is comfortable and only you have to balance the camera because

of the extra hight of RED cradle with battery+RED drive.

And the most important no shoulder pain.

Why?

Thanks to the ALLSTAR shoulder pad partly and also because I had really very

good lightweight RED1 kit that you already have seen before at this picture below.

They key of my lightweight RED1 handheld kit is very light and also for available light fast lens.

WORKFLOW for the fast and dirty test footage:

Camera_H.mov QT wrappers dragged and dropped directly at FCP timeline, fast and dirty choice and cut,

sent to Color, adjusted a bit ISO/ASA for certain shots, no CC at all because didn't have time for that,

rendered files in Color, sent to FCP, added music, exported via QT conversion to HD 720p H264.

Download the footage at 720p H264 78.3 MB>>>

Many thanks Sanjin,

Looks pretty good for a first night out. I can't tell for sure but the footage from time to time looked to have some top-heavy instability qualities. Do you think it would help to have the cradle/battery/drive hung somehow lower - off bottom rails or somesuch? (which I relaize you don't have on your current set-up)

Was that Nino Rota? makes a nice little glimpse of Vienna approaching the holidays. Thanks again for that.

David

David,

about that "the footage from time to time looked to have some top-heavy instability qualities" I have to figure out the next time.

Could be the cradle/battery/drive or it's about RED 4K, skew...etc.

Have a look at CHE trailer in 1080p.

Next time I'll try another combination with this handheld rig.

Also, yes it was Rota... that somehow fits perfect in this post-Barock Viennese ambient.

Hi Sanjin,

Thanks for your very useful posts. It looks like the shoulder mount could be very useful. I was hoping something like this would come out.

You know you could lose even more weight off your camera by getting rid of the hideous Red cage for the Drive and using the very lightweight Action Products Red Raid holders.
