  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Allstar lens is available - 80-200mm T3 PL and 50mm T1.5 PL

Of course you ask for the one of the few that don't!

But Duclos has a nifty gizmo to allow you to reverse.

Ah, that is good to know. Do you know if the CFF1 can do this?
Thanks
/Andreas

Ah, a pity the CFF1 doesn't support it, but the Duclos mod looks useful. Looks fantastic to have a cine style zoom in the 70-200 range that doesnt cost 20/40k

The zoom lens is based on Nikon 80-200.

Which? There are 4, a 12 element design, a 15 element design, a 16 element design, and an 18 element design?

There is only one 80-200 f/2.8 lens still in production and that is AF-D and it is 16 elements design.

Interesting, I had no idea any of them were still available. I bet it's not actually still in production. I bet like the AI-s primes they still sell, they have a reserve of parts left from the last real production run and assemble a small batch every few years as/if demand requires.

If anyone is curious to try this zoom lens in New York City, we have it and it is available for rent.

Amazing work by Tom. The lens feels great, and it covers the full frame still format! That means it will have no problem covering the upcoming Dragon, and the future full frame sensors as well.

It is also very lightweight, you do not need a lens support for it, especially with the Titanium PL mount from RED. See pics below for quick reference.

Looks nice.....how will it compare to GL Optics 70-200??
Now lets get 24-70 out ..

Both lenses should be very closely matched in terms of optical performance since GL Optics uses Canon 70-200 F/2.8 L (Non IS, 1995-today) while Allstar uses Nikon 80-200 f/2.8 AF ED (1997-today) lens. If GL optics rehoused 70-200 L IS II (2010-today), GL would won the game but that wan't the case. GL optics's price is very reasonable for 70-200 full re-housing but it cannot beat the Allstar's price. Last year, Duclos quoted me $3,000 for the PL conversion (with cine-mod) on my Nikon 80-200 and I thought that was a fair price. I know Mark Toia was looking for a Duclos 80-200 PL lens for a while and I think he should be very happy now to get an Allstar 80-200 T.3 PL lens for a lot cheaper -)

I will no longer invest in Nikon lenses. I do not like focus direction, i do not use focus wheel much.
It looks like Zeiss 28-80 T2.9 is the one for me since there is no Mid-lens rehouse.
Nobody wants to go into it.
They say Canon 28-70 is parfocal. I wish somebody rehoused lens like that. I am tired of Still Zooms.

I agree that trying to mix in reverse-direction lenses is a nightmarish proposition for someone who's working almost entirely with cine-direction focus lenses.

This duclos bit is interesting, though I wonder if it's a bit limiting in terms of where you can place the reversing gear, and therefore where the follow focus arm must be as well. The configuration in the picture looks like it would obstruct the witness marks to some degree. This got me thinking that what would be really fantastic is some kind of reversing gear that can live on the lens itself (sort of like a motor can live on a 12x1 Optimo), possibly by way of a low profile ring that can be rotated around the lens body and positioned wherever is ideal for whatever configuration and placement of the FF arm. It also means that you could rearrange placement from one side to another without pulling a bunch of stuff off your rods.

The downside of course would be that it wouldn't likely be as universal as something that is just rod-based like the duclos, but if I only had one or two of these reverse focus direction lenses, I'd be fine with having a more refined solution that is specific to the individual lens.

So anyone with machine shop know-how want to take a crack at it? Tom?

Direction should be a non-issue. Reversing gears are readily available, and wireless units that remap direction (eg - RedRock) are cheaper than an FF4 or CFF-1 these days.

Wish I lived in NYC. That looks so sexy.

Hi
Many people ask about image shift issue on Nikon 80-200 lens, it does exist. When we make it, we will improve, according modifying varifocal to parafocal. Here is a simple video to show:
So Allstar 80-200 lens is not as easy as changing PL mount. It has many works need to be done. We don't have lenses on stock. We receive orders and then start make it. It will need 3-4 weeks to finish. Please do not order this lens when you need it immediately.
We have a demo 50mm PL lens and will sale it as second-handed price.
If anyone interested, please contact me.
We are researching sigma 18-35 mm lens now. It is a very nice lens. Because of iris ring for F1.8, we won't make simple rehousing for it. We will rebuild it's focus to let it has at least 300 degree focus throw for accurate focus.

Tom, please put me down as your first sigma 18-35mm PL mount customer. This is one if my favorite lenses of all time already, and matched with an Allstar sigma 50mm and 85mm would be extremely well rounded as a set. Your 50mm has an amazing look and mechanics to match.

Tom,
Any chance to have thoses cinevised lenses be in Canon mount instead of PL?

Great work Tom - Are you still thinking of making other primes as well? Mainly a 35 and 85 ? . Good luck for 18-35. I will probably be second customer

I thought full frame 24/8-70 was next. Everyone is not keen to do that range. I guess rehouse of Sigma 16mm is next ;-)

Looking forward to our AllStar 80-200 arriving by the end of the month!
