Allowance...

Shawn, I agree with your basic thoughts, but it seems to me that we are getting a more configurable unit, slightly better - at a slightly higher price. I still think this looks very exciting!

Remember, the external LCD is larger than what the internal one would have been if we'd gone that route, so you're actually getting a better / bigger LCD.

Shawn,

"Back in the day" we had a 3.5" LCD on the side of the camera. It is now about twice that size. That was also before we developed REDCODE RAW and the ability to record 4k to drives that cost less than $1000. For the same money, you are getting MUCH more than we spec'd last year. I think if you look closely, you would prefer what we are offering now compared to what was offered then.

But if you are unhappy for any reason, we can certainly refund your deposit plus 10% for any disappointment.

Jim

The original camera design included an LCD. Once that was moved off camera, the specs changed.

We thought - do we give reservation holders the off-board LCD? What if they really wanted the EVF? What if they want neither?

So we decided to give out an allowance, so you can choose your reservation bonus. We thought that was fairest, and gave reservation holders the most choice.

To clarify, the reservation gets you the camera only + the allowance which can go towards any accessories you want. Hope this makes sense.

Graeme

Yep, this makes sense. Thanks

LCD+Battery is $2150, whereas bonus is $2500 and more flexible. I think that's good.

Graeme

Graeme, the sticky is still up there on DVInfo.net, we were promised Red, LCD, battery and charger. The battery is $450, charger is $750 and LCD is $1700. So you have to include charger in your calculations which bring it to $2900. I consider myself one of the biggest Red fanboys but to have the base package price raised on me while everyone celebrates "generosity" is strange. Alas, I'll cough up the extra and more.

Jim, it's just like when I got an extra bill from the hospital today for my sons birth. I'm dissappointed that my baby costs extra, but it's still my baby and I sure as hell won't return it :-)

EDIT: I'm your #27, and it would take a catastrophic personal collapse to keep me from taking claim of that camera. I've got too many plans now to back out :-)

I agree the price is now higher, but still much better then if you did not reserve.

I for one am very happy with the generous offer thanks Red team.

Dont think for a second any of the big boys of broadcast would do the same.

Thinks change and Red compensated. WELL DONE!! thank you.

I hear ya, but they've also always said everything is subject to change. I was kinda hoping the viewfinders would be a little cheaper, but I also kinda had in my mind I'd be spending another $5k to rig it out. Could be more like $7500 even after the $2500 discount when you add even just SLR lenses. NAB is going to tell me a lot about how to rig it though. Do I need both the viewfinder and the LCD? Hmm....

Yup, I see that Shawn. As much as we'd have loved to give away things like that, with the camera spec changes, like Jim mentions the REDCODE RAW 4k to a drive, and the move of the LCD and Battery external, things have to give, and this is one of those things. We've always given the best info we could at the time, full well knowing we're in development and that specs are not fixed. Things have changed.

This might be a stupid question, but here goes anyway. Do I need to buy the separate battery charger in order to charge the battery? Or can I plug in the camera to the wall and have the attached battery get charged without a separate charger being involved?

Graeme, why is the battery charger priced so high? Is there something about it I am not understanding? Does it not just provide a trickle charge to the battery?

spending spree

spending spree

there's something to be said for actually being happy to pay a little more upfront. it's not just great engineering. it's that consumer confidence that emerges from great marketing and business.

thank you red team.

I'd say this is very very very unlikely! ;)

AFAIK, it's a double battery charger, and alternatively it can be used to provide DC supply to the camera.
