Jim -the only ones who should be worrying are the naysayers, and those who didn't get on the bus soon enough. I have personally spent over 500K with Sony prior to RED coming stream, and for 1/10 the price I will have a fully functional macked out system WITH lenses and no need for the VTR until I do my online. This is a fantastic achievement. The Red Team should be proud. ** I should qualify that I also mean Sony pro gear, and well we know what 4K will do to this investment -making it almost obsolete.

Anyone remember when BetaCam SP cameras cost upwards of $40K and only shot in one format at one frame rate in stand def? It wasn't that long ago. This camera at these prices is totally incredible.

Can I get an adapter for my IDX NP-1 packs? And can I use the DC from their charger (Also IDX) to run the camera?

I sure as hell am hoping so, because while I think the prices are MORE than fair, I am in a sticky position myself. I work at a university and I wrote up the equipment request in December. I have only got the 17,500 in the budget for the camera, LCD and batteries, so I am in a tough spot. I can give up some other gear to deal with the 2,950 for the basic production kit and the LCD, but I don't think I can do much beyond that.

In a year or so I can manage to get some more goodies, but for now I am at the limit of my budget, and ready to buy...

Crossing my fingers here!

I am still using BetacamSP everyday, its not going away anytime soon and niether is HD formats. I think RED is far above those formats and will be working very shortly in much higher budget projects for hire and giving that
same quality to projects that have more heart than money.

I'm a little bummed myself only to know that I'll spending alot more then I intended.

Yeah, my feeling exactly. I'm still a 100% onboard and with no thoughts of returning, it's just that the base got raised on us and all the accessories are higher than thought. Certain prices are okay (Red Drive, LCD), but $2750 for the cage?? Dang. I'm still excited about Red, but I don't see why anyone gushes about generosity. It seems that the price of Red got to be more expensive than previously thought and now the accessories are priced much more in line with industry, with the exception of the EVF. I'm okay with this, Jim needs to make money or Red will disappear. As Michael Corleone would say "It's nothing personal, strictly business"

I was a bit fearful that pricing comparisons would be made to prosumer camera systems rather than professional systems. For example, the very best EVF on the market is the Accuscene. It sells for $10-11K. Ours is superior and sells for $2950. Our battery system is significantly cheaper than the major competition.

We really have done our best to develop and price our system under the market in every aspect.

Jim

This is insane. How you are able to create so many increadibly well designed, high end products, that blows away all comparative prices to date, and release them all within such a short amount of time is beyond belief.

I truly look forward to this camera.

Peace,
Dale

you should also factor in the cost of a new system to run REDCine on as the camera is digital and needs a computer to process the images.

Plus add RAID storage to your new system

I was going to buy an fullly packed HVX package and that was over 10,000...I think this is pretty amazing in terms of pricing....full specs on all would be greatly appreciated...

Evin...or anyone really...there is no way I can afford the RAW port and all of the accessories together....is it possible to have the raw port installed later on in place of the Flash system after a period of time?

I'm happy that the LCD is larger but disappointed by this kind of getting snuck under the radar & that I will be spending more on the base package then expected.
I can even understand you but think positive: this is a 4K digital CINEMA camera (you won't need to buy another one so soon...besides and on the other hand, this is an upgradeable camera option) -- be welcome to this community Gerry!

so what if we want the lcd and the evf, do we subtract the $175 (red arm) from the price of the one of them (they both come with the redarm)?

If I decide to get both, I would like to use both (at the same time) and hence I would need the extra arm...

questions, so many questions... I am sure the RED team gets suprised everytime they announce anything, cause for one thing they announce, at least 10 questions they didn´t think about comes up.

Mmmm... by my calculations the base useable camera is around $22K (minus deposit and allowance).

But that is like getting a 911 without air conditioning, I know I will want more on the camera package.

For me, the pricing is actually lower than what I expected. Look at the specs on those batteries, 140ah. That with charger is an excellent price. Remember, you are also getting support.

My quandry is get the evf, the lcd or both. I would need the evf for outdoor shooting, but a focus puller could certainly use the LCD. And need to get 2 Red Hard drives...

Is either the evf or LCD high enough quality to check focus?

Is the Canon adaptor the one that supports EOS thats been talked about?

I think we all got too comfortable with expectations.

These prices are just A BIT of the cost we would have to spend if there was no RED.
Remember, no one promised us exact pricing and it was clearly stated that changes were possible.

I really doubt that a plan of "making the world's best camera" consists of ripping off the first believers.

Please don't be unfair. This all is still unbelieveably good.

i'm sorry guys, but i've read and re-read the flash media stuff and i just don't understand... what is the RED FLASH (CF) ON CAMERA Module ($500)? what is the RED 1.8" SATA Flash ON CAMERA Module ($500)? what is the RED 1.8" SATA Flash 32GB Media ($1500) it says below that it doesn't include media... so if it isn't media, what is it? same goes with the RED "EXPRESS CARD" FLASH Module?
again, sorry for my ignorance but what is the $4500 RED RAM 64GB?
can anyone help??

I'd guess both will be. I think NAB will really show what we need. I'm pretty sure I'm going to want that EVF though. You gotta be able to shoot in any lighting condition. The LCD with a 10' cord could be the director's viewfinder... so I'd probably want both. Unless a 3rd party LCD would work and was as good for less money.... but I'm guessing they won't draw power. Can't wait to see the cables for these.

Agreed... if I was to imagine a system like this a few years ago... well, this is amazing. For everyone that's freaking out about the cost of the package... what did you expect? This isn't an HVX-200... this is digital cinema at highest quality in the world for the cost of a Sony HDXdcam package. Geez...

The answer... get both. For me, the EVF is paramount, the LCD a close second.

Oh hell ya! They are both 720p displays with Graeme's magical focus assist...
