  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I dont think you can find an 720P LCD for that price... Am I wrong? I think all the prices were entirely reasonable.

The answer... get both. For me, the EVF is paramount, the LCD a close second.

Jim, if thats the case, then you save even more money by NOT having to be tethered to a large heavy field monitor. On a sound stage, or controlled situation they would anyway, but glidecam operators not needing a tether? cool.

Speaking of NAB, Last year at NAB, Your Booth was very successfull, but it made for a very crowded and difficult time to talk or check out the product. This year will be many times more crowded since you have a "Operational Revolutionary Camera" to show.

1. Will you have a bigger booth this year ?

2. Will we be able to get to the product, I would like to check out the accessories for the RED we have on order.

3. Show times are going to be very crowded, will any of you be headed toward any watering holes in the las vegas desert at the end of each day where we might meet up and talk ?

4. Any other events you have planned for NAB ?

Jim, when you first announed the development of the Red camera on DVXuser and polled everyone on what pricing should be many were not only happy but amazed that a camera of this caliber would sell for even 50k!

Now that I see a total package adding up to around 27k with all the goodies including batteries, charger, rails, evf, lcd, recording media, I couldn't be more greatful! This is absolutely UNHEARD of and the prices match your original promise and vision of delivering an affordable and revolutionary camera. For the 100th time, with more to come, thank you Jim and IN RED I TRUST since day one!
 
Everyone who is bitching about any of this...you ain't worked in the broadcast/film world. At twice the price of this stuff, I'd still be all over it. Nobody owes you a 4k film making package that is comfortably within your price range. If you can't afford it...buy an HVX200 and make some content. If that's too expensive, borrow someone's DV camera. I've been in the business 35 years and the closest thing I've seen to this, in terms of a product turning the industry upside down, was Final Cut Pro.

March on RED guys. Your pricing is beyond fair.

Its the difference between "PRO" gear and prosumer along with the power cosumption required by larger pro cameras to get decent run times.
 
So when will we be able to order these products and take our allowance???
Are you going to ration the products out so the first 1000 owners don't buy all the batteries and such???

Thank you so much for letting me stepping up and being able to continue working on making films with high quality equipment. I'm in a film school, so I have been able to shoot with fairly expensive equipment for a few years, like CineAlta, VariCam, SDX-900, and Film cameras. Now with your revolution, I can OFFER my extremely high quality gear along with my creativity, whereas without Red, I would have to struggle to sign on a project that will shoot no where near Red system.

I see a lot of people complaining about the prices, and I agree with those people taking HVX-200 as comparison. Since I've been shooting a feature with HVX-200, here goes a price list for the set-up I've been using.

HVX-200 package with 2 8G P2 cards: $8,500
Marshall Monitor with panny bat upgrade: $1,500
Redrock Micro 35mm adapter HD Bundle: $1,290

Only these three items make over $11,000 already, and guess what?
You get to shoot fake 1080i with a small chip with more(worse) compression, blah, blah, blah..

Like Jannard was saying, this camera shouldn't be compared to any of the prosumer cameras. The CineAltas and VariCam that we have in school do less than 10% of what Red is capable of doing, and they cost hell of a lot more.

As a 30-year veteran of the motion media industry who is deeply familiar with the price to performance ratio of motion media cameras over all those years, I assure you that today's RED price list announcement has signaled a new paradigm in price to performance ratio in the convergent motion media industry.

Translation: what you're getting for what you're paying is phenomenally beyond any price/performance ration in the history of this industry!

IMO anyone who complains about that price list is simply unaware of the history of professional acquisition equipment pricing.

My advice? Smile...your professional dreams have just been enabled...whether you realize it or not...

Being a former CineAlta and current Varicam Owner these price's are fantastic, but I feel it will have a severe cut into what it costs to rent camera's for! I would get $1200 to $1500 aday for a camera package true my investment is smaller but also I feel everyone and there brother is going to have one of these! My real point here is dont kiss the gift horse in the mouth over a couple hundred bucks these price's are unbelievable and will revolutionize the industry if it can actually deliver!

I have been bridging that gap between amateur and professional (full-time freelance for the last 15 months now.) The RED One will be my first camera since I bought a JVC GY-DV500 in 2001. I had not been able to afford a $120K Varicam/CineAlta package and avoided all the pro-sumer compromises in the hope that something would come along that would answer my needs at my budget.

Enter the RED One.

Anyone who complains about the pricing and most generous allowance simply has no perspective. Go ahead and just try to find a comparable camera from JVC/Sony/Panasonic (like that's even possible.) Then, add glass, rods, matte box, follow focus, LCD screen... When you've entered six digits, perhaps you will have a clue how amazing an accomplishment the RED One truly is.

Well put Gibby. This was always work in progress and to the folk whom are complaining about a small variance price increase.. if you had enough faith and vision to invest early then you can appreciate that by having a priority delivery of your Red system, you can use it quicker and reap the associated savings in rental or return from hire. That should more than compensate.
I too am a long term shooter (34 yrs) and this is my first camera equipment purchase. The reason being finally a tool that will satisfy a significant amount of my requirements.
It took a visionary company to introduce this product to the market and price it very fairly and make it upgradeable.
