  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

All the bad news...

This is a perfect example why we should go dark.

Or maybe as an alternative, promise everyone a "State of the Camera" message every month or so. If news is scheduled in a timely fashion... say, the beginning of every month, everyone knows that the latest news will be forthcoming at that time. You could even postpone for a few days if you felt something was about to break. And of course, good news could be released any time as breaking news. Naturally, no one would expect you to update in such a way as to help the opposition... just some general information.

At least once Stage 4 Epics are selling it will close a chapter in the History of RED and the Company can re-evaluate it's marketing strategy. I think at that point things will be much more predictable and innovation should slow down.

I don't think RED and slow down should be used in the same sentence. Especially when related to innovation. :coolgleamA:

Unfortunately I have been on a list like others for the last 16 months. I have every right to ask the question since I do have cash tied up in this. I am certainly not going to stop asking the question. Last I heard this was a public forum, and we were allowed to ask questions. If it would cost me an extra 2-4-6 grand to expedite this I would.

geez, what a hostile place this is these days...

Dear Colin, i think hardly hostil to tell you that the answer to your question is on SEVERAL threads, numerous posts and within this same thread. I also am on a waiting list for two x's....but i have just read through the info here and posts to know what the wait is....I think maybe i was answering your question by also pointing out you could have found the answer with a few minutes of searching. If you need to here it again...

....parts are in high demand and being sold at huge premiums....i think it was stated (in this thread) as much as 300% or more.....So in order to keep more epics in production as M's seems to make sense since red would have to lower their profit margin significantly for the x's....So it's RED's choice AND yours....RED chooses not to release the X's until normal parts manufacturing and pricing comes back online and YOUR choice to choose to pay MORE for an M.

i don't hear anyone saying you don't have the right to ask, but man, just do two second of work before you just ask the same question that is being asked 50 times a day....that way the threads don't get so full of repeats....

Have a nice day sir......feel any better?

and as you just said....pony up and buy an M like many others if you don't mind spending the extra $$$ and then be done and wait for your x's

Jim,

It seems everytime I am on this site, there are over a thousand users sharing the experience - and that number does not even include the guests.

The posts born mostly from frustration (or occasionally ignorance) are more the exception than the rule.
For every two or three that don't get it, there are hundreds, perhaps thousands, that do.

RDC is continually pushing the technological edge - leading all of us into a new era of image acquisition. We share in the joy of using the tools already in our hands and anticipate the future based on the transparency you have brought to the process. Take that away, and we all lose something.

Keep those lights turned on .

All the good news...

All the good news...

I have a RED One MX. I have amazingly fast SSD's. I have a BOMB. This is the best camera I have ever owned, period.

When my Epic-X is ready it will be the best camera I have ever owned. In the meantime I'm shooting with Rosebud and loving it.

All good news.

Keep doing what you do RED.

Totally agree. I did not know if I should or not go SSD for my Red (because of the 1500 $ for the Red One module). But now, I have a new camera, very very light. And It is so safe to shoot SSD that every RedOne user should take the SSD.
It is a new camera. I use it. I can wait, no problem.

Great Idea!

My feelings are the same....MX is great and as long as Epic-X does not arrive, I am loving my MX...and will still continue loving my MX even after EPIC-X arrives.
The waiting is hard, but it would be much harder if I did not have a RED already

Jim, don't go dark, that would not be your way of doing things...that is just not you, and not how you have made us come to expect of you...continue being as you are...give us news when and if you think it is necessary...don't change

Because as we all know: lack of information always calms nerves, suppresses conspiracy theories and eliminates speculation. ;)

No one wants a price increase in EPIC-X. The price increase for putting together cameras from higher priced parts is EPIC-M.

I don't want to have to explain every detail of why this works the way it does, but I will say that we have thousands of orders for EPIC-X that we wish we could ship and a couple of hundred orders for EPIC-Ms. The math says we have no reason to hold back EPIC-X.

Maybe you should try to do this yourself rather than guess all that is involved in a program like this?

Jim

Amazing customer focus and transparency. May be a monthly newsletter to update the scenario would be great. It can remain in the sticky so that people don't ask the same questions questions again and again.

Cheers,
Sabyasachi

Are you guys still having trouble finding parts? Maybe the RedUser army could help execute the process so we can get some cameras in the pipes ; ) I'll personally call everyone on the planet to help! Free sweat equity!!

All you need to know is that RED already have their top men working on this...

Top.

Men.

What is with all the rampant fanboyism? Jannard didn't grow Oakley into a multi-billion dollar company by crowd-sourcing very serious business into a play party. He has shifted an entire industry worth of careers by knowing what he's talking about with this company. Don't encourage him to stop communicating by overstepping your bounds.

I like to hear about new features, accessories, big movies shooting, and anything from David Mullen. But as for deadline updates, I can do without them since they are so rarely correct.

I think Apple has it right.. When it's ready to go, let us know. That way when you miss a deadline, no one will know. :)

On another note, I'd like to state that I think 300fps on the Epic is nothing short of Amazing.. Well don RED

Deal.

The reason you don't hear a lot of other companies talking about Japan is because other companies are not as transparent as we are... they don't give you open roadmaps. They usually don't give you a peak behind the curtain what they are working on years in advance. Most of you feel like our family.. our close friends... this business to us is personal.

We probably should be a little more discrete on our schedules.. it is just so damn hard because we get so excited about this stuff we tend to spill the beans the moment we get internal dates. Historically it seems that the value of a short-term moment of excitement that comes from us sharing what's in our minds may not be worth the long-term hurt feelings and lashings we get when we miss targets.

I think you're right, Jarred - and I think Jim had it right in what (IIRC) he said a while back; something about not telegraphing your future plans to the competition. I believe you shouldn't mention the word 'Dragon' again until a couple of days before something shows up in the store. It would be cool if you were working on a $20k 25-250mm Optimo-killer (for instance), but I don't think you should so much as hint it exists until it hits the shelves. We know the general roadmap: disruptive technology of all kinds, bigger and better sensors, starting with 35mm full-frame at some point, and going up from there. Fine, that's all we need to know. We trust you; with EPIC you don't have anything left to prove (except obviously an ability to deliver it in quantity and on price! And we trust you to fix that problem too.)

But for the stuff that's already been announced, and delayed... absolutely you should stay transparent and issue regular updates. We would *like* all the toys, right now. But we'll wait until they're ready; transparency about that part of the process helps the wait, IMHO, and you can't have too much of it.

Mike

You have always met or exceeded your quality, features, technological, and performance goals. ( 300 fps ! I remember talking to Jim about higher framerates and damn if he didn't do it. )

You also achieve these way ahead of anyone else out there.

Sharing your vision is one of the best things going for this company. Please don't stop.

The way it is now..or rather has been..is much preferable to the alternative which are the
Apple/Canon rumors websites run by industry psychics. Those who can't deal should just
close their eyes...and let those who can deal with the realities deal with it.
