  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

All the bad news...

Sharing a roadmap is pretty important so that people can plan ahead. It need not be very precise like release in week 24 or week 36 etc etc. The strength of this company is the transparency and taking the customers with it in its journey. No other company does that. That is the strength of this company and shouldn't be dispensed with.

I can plan my future path better if there is atleast a broad roadmap shared. With other companies one needs to use "contacts" to find out. And for the people who don't have the contacts it is down to rumour mongering.

People who know a little bit about the happenings in Japan, can tell how deeply the supply chain has been impacted (or wiped out). The situation is improving. So if the team here misses some self-imposed deadlines, the community here should be a bit more understanding.

May appear so if measured in decibels, but still I think there's a lot of people in this community not making noise while highly appreciating the unorthodox way of communicating the excitement. The world is full of lukewarm coffee which does not create any excitement. It's unique that Red is hot coffee, and I would give my vote that you go on the same way.

What's the chance of getting the EPIC-S out while waiting for:

the EPIC-X parts (or does the EPIC-S share these parts?);
the Scarlet lens issues to be fixed;
the features to all be enabled, (I can definitely shoot using only 3k RAW at 24fps for now if that's all I can use)?

yes no yes?

I don't know why so many people want to upset the apple cart on here. Lots of technologies across many industries are delayed at the moment. What's so difficult to understand??

On a lighter note, if Red do go dark as Jim suggests, they'll have to be renamed Maroon...

As stated, the Epic-S will be a "cheaper" redesign of the Epic-X. I get the impression this is not only about the device itself, but cheaper can also be accomplished in optimizing the production lines. So, you must have experience with the first to do the later.

See Jim's thread addressing this issue. In sum: EPIC-X production has to be nailed before EPIC-S can ship.

OK, after much deliberation, I've decided I'm going to sell my 5dmkII w/ leitaxed Leica elmarit macro 60mm this week for the sooner than later coming of the Scarlet. I wanted a Red all this time for all these years, and rather be without a camera for the time being with cash ready in a savings account to hand over to Jim instantly on its release. The 120fps demo got to me somehow...maybe it was the hookers.

Why not wait until the Scarlet is closer to release? Were it me I'd keep myh camera now for your projects. We have no real visibility into the schedule for Scarlet production, other than knowing Jim will be very disapointed if it doesn't happen this year. But logistical circumstances, unfortunately, have disapointed Jim before.

Well, at first I figured doing so in waiting until closer to its release but were talking 3 to 6 months max at this point (I can only hope...). And presently with the 5dmkII price still the same and its demand still high as well as possible rumors of mkIII, I am thinking I could probably get more for it now than later. As far as not having a cam, for 3 to 6 months, the wait doesn't seem too harsh since a Red is the cam I always wanted in the first place (I will miss my Leica lens though...). I guess it is a gamble to put off working with my gear now, it's just I always wanted the RED in the first place and am just substituting it seems for delayed gratification.
