  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

All the bad news...

FWIW - It has always been my understanding that the Epic-X was going to be the first production model of Epic and the Fixed was to be the first Scarlet; there was never any intent to concurrently introduce the other respective models in each line (again, as I understand it). So, it might not make much sense to talk about the second phases of production for these cameras before the first phase is even in process. Personally, I wouldn't expect to hear much about Scarlet interchangeable until about the time the Fixed is shipping (or at least getting ready to ship) and the same with Epic-S in relation to. Epic-X.

I think we just want some mention from Jim about them. For all we know he might be including Epic-S when mentioning the X.

I was curious if the EOS mount will support Image Stabilizing.. I would have posted in the other thread but it seems to be closed. Thanks Ben.

Exactly. Just knowing that it's still in Red's mind is reassuring to us. I know how the initial line up has been going, but id like to hear about The Epic S and Scarlet Interchangeable. It seems like for indie film makers, those are going to be the two most major cameras on the market.

All the bad news that I can think of…

1. Supply chain issues. This continues to drive us crazy. We have just gotten word of more delays with several key components from Japan for EPIC-X. We are now looking at late July to receive parts and for the production line to ramp up. We can make a lot of cameras… just need some critical parts.

2. Lens issues with Fixed Scarlet. We have lens production issues that need to be resolved before we can begin production. My bet is September.

3. Features. We continue to enable features in both EPIC and Scarlet… but every feature is not enabled at this point. We are enabling new features every week. Expect us to continue that trend and improve the features of the cameras steadily. EPIC and Scarlet share an unified code base so what gets enabled in EPIC gets enabled in Scarlet.

Engineering cameras that are as complicated and spec-intensive as these is not easy. We have set time targets and missed them. However, we have not missed any spec targets. To the contrary, we have exceeded them. Both EPIC and Scarlet produce images that are much better then we ever anticipated.

We are transparent. For better or for worse. We acknowledge that we are in uncharted territory. We have never done this. Neither has anyone else. While we hope that you can appreciate pushing everything to the Nth degree, we also know you need to make plans. No one wants to finish development and begin shipping more than I do. No one. Truly. But there is a reality that we bump up against. Our commitment to our customers mandates that we tell the bad news right along side the good news. So there you have it.

Now… if you want some good news… EPIC-M continues to go out in measured numbers and the images from these cameras are unparalleled.

There are far fewer people posting about missing EVFs because we are shipping regular amounts each month.

REDmags and R1 SSD Modules are shipping in reasonable quantities.

EPIC continues to be the choice for the highest budget features… because the images this camera makes are legendary. "This is the best looking footage I have ever shot... these are the best images I have ever seen!" John Schwartzman, Cinematographer of "The Amazing Spiderman".

We have just enabled an EPIC anamorphic mode with more pixels than 4.5K as well as 2K at 300fps (an example of beating specs) in the latest EPIC-M firmware build (for free).

Greame's Magic Motion HDRx is soon to be enabled in free REDCINE-X application...

We have a complete assembly line in California ready and waiting… just need parts.

The extra development time has been well spent. What we are fixing now helps every future customer.

I wish we had some traits of the big guys… but I wouldn't trade our program for anyone's.

God love us all…

Jim

Thanks for the update. The scarlet delay sucks but honestly, I thought it would be a lot worse than it is. As long as you keep us posted on developments (good or bad) we won't really have anything to complain about. Most of us understand there are always bumps in the road when it comes to R&D fixing bugs, working out supply issues etc. Also, I love how you gave us the cough medicine immediately followed by some sugar, makes it harder to bitch... :)

It is painful to post bad news. Really. But if we were the customer (we are)... we would want to know.

Jim

Yes, Jim. . . no news is the loser!

Stephen

Thanks for keeping us in touch with the delays regarding Scarlet. Whether it comes out in Sept or Jan 2012 or next Sept 2012 I'll be just as interested to buy one. Very excited and patient due to your openess about what's up.

Stay well.

Better bad news than no news at all...Thanks again Jim!

And better bad news than worse news in a situation like this Jim, its understandable, don't sweat it.

Thanks.

Personally it's been frustrating hearing about all these Epic M's and huge studio features. I enjoyed and benefited from the way the Red One was distributed to those who believed early as opposed to those that have more $ in the case of Epic M. Sure things are being worked out in this time but I always thought being beta testers was great too. Both from rentals in a less saturated market and from being more familiar with the camera than most DP's professionally. I don't spend much time on the forums anymore but did the Japan quake happen after M's were going out and that is how this huge gap between M's and X's were created? Can't afford an M as I have made some other investments prior to the Japan quake but planning for a stage 3 X. Been shooting Alexa and occasionally my Red One in the meantime.

I do agree that bad news is better than no news and appreciate that.

I think you are not the only one but there are thousands...and most are not even posting as we do not have any other OPTION....EPIC is a 'scene changer' and worth the wait.

It's pretty easy to think this way. I've briefly done so myself. But then I remember that those of us on hold are being rewarded more than required with the discounts, trade in options, and more than fair camera pricing. Frustrating seeing the cameras being sold to the higher bidders? Yes. But on the whole, not unreasonable. I think it would play in Peoria.

This is great news! I know a ton of DPs that love their Anamorphics. Thanks for the update Jim!

Jim,

Thanks again for the update and the transparency, and commiserations on the crazy-making. A straight question, based on the above two statements.

Of course anything can happen, but once your supply chain issues are 'fixed' do you expect them to *stay* fixed?

Or is there a significant risk August will come and you'll be saying 'well we have enough parts to run (say) 1,000 EPIC-X and start filling Stage 2, but there might then be a three month hiatus before we get enough parts to do another run'?
