  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

All the bad news...

Filming the streets of Rome with the Redvolts lowering dramatically the foot print of the Epic is going to be FUN... not that carrying the Belt battery clip is horrible,
but those cables and huge block hanging form your belt does not serve as good as the Redvolts will... ;)

So looking forward to those little suckers.. ;)
 
Thanks Jim, we sympathise. I have been waiting from 2004, from when I was advocating a cheap manufactured digital cinema camera at the dvinfo diy digital cinema camera projects and chasing up manufacturers behind the scenes. Looks like I will be out of luck for my hopes of getting it in time to get to grips with it, or getting on ball or funding enough for an olympics project.

Jim, with all the years, has there been time for a resolution upgrade to 4k 16:9 for the low end scarlets? We also hear so little about the FF scarlet? It would be great if we had an option that could do 4k footage and 8k stills.

2. Lens issues with Fixed Scarlet. We have lens production issues that need to be resolved before we can begin production. My bet is September.

3. Features. We continue to enable features in both EPIC and Scarlet… but every feature is not enabled at this point. We are enabling new features every week. Expect us to continue that trend and improve the features of the cameras steadily. EPIC and Scarlet share an unified code base so what gets enabled in EPIC gets enabled in Scarlet.

Let up on him. I appreciate where he is coming from, but he should wait for the red dragon, there is no time for a sensor redesign The present technique is only a retrofit a couple of us suggested, the scarlet, from what was originally announced, was not to have any. During the original diy digital cinema camera projects that Jim saw and inspired him to start Red, we identified a high quality 27 stop sensor technology, and a 20 stop one with 20 stop snr, years ago, but such technologies would take a long time to license (if available) let alone integrate into sensor. So SJ, it is presently a done deal on the camera.

We are thankful it is not 2012.

Thank you far not only sharing the good news. I really really do hope you have a company cookbook somewhere and on the first page it says "be as open and honest to your customers and future customers as possible" - its the reason I am still here. Everything is understandable if communicated in an open honest manner. Keep it up and fingers crossed to get you the parts you need.
Its incredible to watch that with such a huge global supply chain some parts are made just in a small area of the world making the whole chain so fragile.
 
Jim, I suppose one thing I would like to ask if it could be put on the fixed scarlet, is this little simple cheap slither of a 3d filming gadget slid inbetween the lens and sensor for the high speed modes? Even if it had to be inserted by a external slot port as an option, but it is an easier future optional extra for non fixed scarlets and epics:

We all got our work-arounds that's why we get stuff done ey!!

Everytime I see an anouncement like this I can hardly be disapointed. This is such an amazing company from the first day they shared their plans with the world. I don't care about delays...those are not a handicap.

Just keep pushing tech to the edge and I'm happy. In the meantime we'll have tons of work to do with mysterium x's.

That why I love these guys so much...REDefining the limitations as a main objective. Just awesome. So stoked for features that will help us all create new ways to work. I'm super thankfull that so much is being shared so we have some time to think and prepare for what is comming. To be on the frontline is an important step to be ready for us all.

I'm making no plans with Scarlet (or epic) till I got it. So I'm still shooting without it (them).

Ok, I'll be 'that guy'.. Any information on the Scarlet Cinema / Interchangeable? This is the perfect fit for my projects, and I can understand that there's a bulk of interest in the fixed Scarlet and Epics... but it'd be nice to see if there's any information about a potential time line for the production of the Cinema / Interchangeable?
 
Anyway I am glad the RED save the transparency!
We will be waiting! It is a long way!
 
Glad to see more and more updates. But ill also be that guy. It feels like the Scarlet Fixed and EPIX X are the only cameras being mentioned and not the EPIC S or Scarlet Interchaneable. For alot of us hearing updates about the X and fixed are awesome but we are really wanting to get information on the other ones no one is talking about. I have money ready to send you immediately when you announce the S is ready. So maybe you could include some news even if its bad. I don't want to feel like that cameras not getting made anymore. :/

FWIW - It has always been my understanding that the Epic-X was going to be the first production model of Epic and the Fixed was to be the first Scarlet; there was never any intent to concurrently introduce the other respective models in each line (again, as I understand it). So, it might not make much sense to talk about the second phases of production for these cameras before the first phase is even in process. Personally, I wouldn't expect to hear much about Scarlet interchangeable until about the time the Fixed is shipping (or at least getting ready to ship) and the same with Epic-S in relation to. Epic-X.

Surely as a camera manufacturer you'd rather charge a few thousand dollars for this niche feature and provide the feature as a license key which I can then as a rental owner decide to bilk my customers for?

Oh wait, I have you confused with the other guys.
