  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

All quiet on the (RED)western front ...

it worked so far because there were no other options. It would have worked same way if its dump pl mount :)
Even sony could do both i/ and LDS why not add those for new camera line ?
I get kind of confused on all the new PL options:
"i" is connectors on the top
"lds" is connectors to the side (right side looking into camera
"PL" S35 ... normal looking PL mount
"PL" FF ... PL mount looks the same but the part going to the sensor looks a bit bigger
"PLX" 70mm mount that just looks gigantic

I've noticed the newer arri plx mount is both "i" and "lds". I haven't heard exactly what the new VV PL mount for red is (i.e. i don't think it is PLX? . OR will red have a VV and a PLX mount?). I personally want the RED 8k so i can use the full height of the anamorphic lenses, but when I use normal lenses on the 8k i'll want to go with Hasselblad lenses which I hope there is a mount for that which has all the electronics for the new hasselblads. I don't plan on buying any PLX lenses, and I think that those that RENT the 70mm PLX type lenses also provide a custom mount for them that has been tested with RED.

LMAO ... i think i need a new Phil chart for this :)

I don't know the specifics regarding the new upcoming 8K PL mount, but if I had to guess there needs to be a slight redesign to support a larger rear exit pupil.

XPL and PVs 70 mount are designed for wider formats and need to have the OD bigger to support the sensor and optics.

I'll certainly be testing coverage and all that when that time comes.

We've been using the i data from the fujinon zooms for car replacement VFX for years now. Apparently it helps the post guys a ton, as others have mentioned. We would love to have LDS support, but if the cost for the mount is double I'd probably pass... Only because we have the "i" system already working and I wouldn't get any more $ for my rentals for supporting LDS- just happy VFX guys. It would be ideal to have both in a single mount. Maybe I'd pay up to $4k for that

Ask somebody what they want from a new camera and they'll list practically everything.. attach a price tag to everything and ask again, and you end up with two pragmatically prioritized lists titled 'must have' and 'nice to have' :)

i guess you dont understand what we are saying :)
We are already paying for PL mount and other 2 rival camera suppliers already did BOTH.

Oopps i forgot they also made LBus connector with integrated lens control unit ;)

All 3 rivals, Sony, Arri, and even Panasonic support LDS.
Only RED and Black Magic do not. That is not beneficial for Weapon's image to be in that catgory.

The work around is to use an ARRI UMC-4 Lens controller system, with the ARRI UMC you can store lens metrics to an SD card slaved to timecode, but it turns into a cable rats nest fast and creates more work in post when making selects.

Also currently, Dragon with a Master Prime or Master anamorphic , when remote- car mount, technocrane, steadi, etc - the DP sees no lens data - focus/iris/etc - only the AC sees it on the physical controller. Most DPs and even some directors are use to seeing it from the Alexa, specially car commercial guys - so they don't understand why the Red can't deliver this simple feature.

If Red supported LDS this would not be necessary, maybe this would translate into sales of the Red WMC and THC lens controller system.

Red did promise LDS with Epic-X , I don't think it is very fair to ask upgraders to pay more money for it?:

EPIC-X FEATURES
....
Independent Stills and Motion Modes (both record full resolution REDCODE RAW)
LDS and /i Data enabled PL Mount
....
Jim

You are making a NEW PL mount for Weapon, one mount can support i/data and LDS.
You are switching from Titanium to Magnesium, lower strength, maybe some weight savings, but fairly significant manufacturing cost savings - could you take your cost savings and put it towards LDS development man hours? We are already pay a premium:
Arri Titanium PL mount with LDS lens data and L-Bus lens control $1250 vs Red Magnesium PL mount $3500

LDS is not some crazy new feature request idea, like the ProRes module or Meizler module, its used daily on productions.
Weapon CF upgrade and purchase price is very expensive as it is, maybe with merit - but still expensive at least for me.
Make LDS a Weapon CF only feature, it would be great to have another differentiating benefit.

Sorry if my tone is too matter of fact, I like working Master Primes; I like working with the Dragon; I like supporting a US camera manufacturer with our $$, I am just disappointed not to receive promised features on the the equipment we purchase. At Weapon's price point I don't think I'm going to be the only one that is less forgiving than in the past.

For the Pro-Res differentiation between Carbon and Magnesium, can they maybe limit the Magnesium to 422 HQ and let the Carbons have the higher end 4444 Pro-Res flavors?

Limiting the Pro-Res to 2k for the Magnesium just does not seem right. Seems like for how much the Magnesium costs, 4K UHD at 120fps (or at least 60fps) should just be a given in this day and age. Plus, its Red... you just expect a bit more resolution and better specs.

Really looking forward to the Magnesium Weapon, the Red for the rest of us.
