i really don't understand why red people as such a hard time to admit that arri did amazing job with there wireless system
They should go back on drawing board and take this as a challenge and try to compete
competition is good and should make the company moving ahead
i own both system and if red release something better i will be the first one to applaud
i'm not a red or a arri fanboy i'm just a pragmatic person who use the best gear to get the job done

Thank you for you very intelligent and pragmatic answer
I feel that we are the only one here who understand that or ever use this system on this site
with red you need to ad different module and at the end it's never going to be at the same level
the arri remote fully control the camera and the focus ,iris ect ... work flawlessly without adding anything
simply PRICELESS

Ok. But for what I do, this means nothing to me. I do mostly studio work. Id rather have 5 or 6 RAVENS than one Mini. But thats just me.

With release of Raven, Arri's price point certainly appears more exclusive than ever - especially considering RAVEN WEIGHS HALF AS MUCH. And shoots 4K. RAW. Out of the box. And appears easier (at first glance) to rig and mount on a drone/gimbal than a Mini.

..... I know this is a bit off point.... but is anyone here scared that Raven will hurt the rental value of their Dragons/Weapons?

I suspect a few producers... not understanding the different cameras in the range will be less likely to spend on the Dragon or Weapon unless you can justify it.
I think Arri will still be able to get away with murder (it is a mental thing but I suspect that is how it will be)

We were millimetres away from buying the new Alexa SXT EV.... but all things added a brand new Weapon Mag was coming in at £31K ish and the Alexa SXT EV at £70k ish.... I don't believe anyone here can really argue that there is 40K difference between the two image capture devices.

Of course. But lack of PL options in RAVEN should help with that.

Again I've tested both cameras.... and looked at several tests. Once you work with Arriraw or Redraw... the image quality is almost undistinguishable after grading.... I challenge anyone here to a test shoot.... after post these cams both deliver. Both cameras have different ethoses... so it is really an issue as Arri can't really justify the £40K difference.... my only grip with Red is that I have had a few too many breakdowns.... but on the good side their EMT service is the best in the world.

The Arri system is the best hands down. With the c-motion collaboration it is really the best on the market for versatility with 6 different motors to choose form and 3 different motor controllers.

Even if you want to make this sweeping statement.... the Alexa SXT plus costs £45K more than Magnesium Weapon.... can you really say that is value.... and by the way not everyone needs wireless functionality.... or wants to be forced to buy C motion or Arris WCU... the only systems that have integrated functionality.... even prestons don't work with it

Lets be honest ... Red offers better value.... and if you minus the cost of heavy tripods needed for the Alexa there are even more savings.... I am no Red fan boy.... and it is fiddly.... and a bit unreliable sometimes compared to Alexa's tank build quality.... but for the price difference.... at this point there is no discernable image quality difference.... only taste preferences. I do accept there are legitimate work style/handling preferences of one over the other but that again is all about each individuals prefered way to work on the camera.

...... it is kind of like asking who is your favourite Bond or Bond villain.... it all depends. Oldies prefer Mr Connery but today's kids love Mr Craig

i own both an arri and a red and would be happy to try and test this out at some point, also to know more for my own edification... ill try and get something scientific going on once i get past a few project deadlines... but overall id say your better off servicing both markets than choosing sides... my bills don't really care if the money came from red rentals, arri rentals, or logging clips like a punk lol!

I'm surprised that no one yet has said in this tread.... "Don't feed the t....."

Unless I missed it.

well the pro red side repeats itself too. i say i shoot my arri vs my red and settle this bs forever! after Oct 3rd ill see what i can do testing wise, i got like a one day shoot penciled in and thats it the rest of the year so if the damn things ever stop renting i can compare/contrast them... id even bring them to red NYC to have others involved with the tests to make sure we try to remain empirically honest... hell id even invite the OP and all the arri fan boys i know too

Horses for courses, of course

Horses for courses, of course

ARRI makes amazing gear. Build quality is off the hook and the image is excellent. Some of their control options/protocols are well implemented and useful. If I'm not rolling my Epic Dragon then seeing an Alexa on the show is a relief.

Is ARRI worth the price premium? It is if that's what your clients want to use/rent. From a technical perspective, that's a much tougher equation with each system having its strong and weak points. My personal preference is RED, and not just because I one. I prefer the greater spatial resolution, RAW color (without taking on the ARRIRAW/Codex load) and compact form factor (yes, the Mini solves that, but in a configuration that requires more add ons for most use cases).

Cheers - #19

My sweeping statement is correct. And who cares about the price of the SXT vs Weapon? What does that have to do with wireless? And ya every professional shoot uses a wireless fiz. While preston may be the industry standard over here it is not even in the same league with the technology of c-motion and arri. Go try one out for yourself. Or you could just use a follow focus with your weapon

As an independent artist, owner operator that also happens to shoot internationally broadcasted commercials, there's no comparison between a Red Epic Dragon and any sort of Arri camera (excluding maybe the 65mm rental only one).

This is not a fan statement, while I do consider myself someone that appreciates Red unique aproach and quality.

The Epic Dragon is a DSMC. The Alexa in any form isn't. There are magazines that shoot covers with Red. No one does this with Alexa.
The Epic Dragon shoots High speed. At full HD or 2K its an incredible high speed camera. At 6K it shoots more than 75fps, which is unbelievable.
Redcode Raw is just a joy to work with. Arriraw? You say it.

If I had the budget I would've jumped to Weapon Dragon CF awaiting for Vista without even blinking.

For an owner operator, creative independent filmmaker, Red is simply the best offering on the market. Better than competition costing twice or triple as much.

Don't mean to highjack the thread but this has been my pet peeve for the longest time.
Please note the difference.
