  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Of course it's a joke but the guy won't think it's a joke if the police show up on his door...pretty lame....

Everything should be investigated right?? Might teach the guy a lesson...

I know someone that had his NC stollen. A few weeks later a friend of his called him and said "someone just tried to sell me your NC", so he was able to set the guy up and get it back. So things can sometimes turn out well in time.

More ominous is if someone had a reason to take the camera (for industrial espionage such as to photograph the sensor layers one by one), I think I remember that someone broke into your shop early on and stole some RED ONE shells, were you able to get those back?

Someone broke into George Lucas office or something and stold production photos or slides, things he may not have had copies of, I'm not sure if he got those back.

Maybe since the new cameras are both small and high value, they could have a built in "kill code" that needs to be refreshed on-line every 60 days, if the camera is not hooked to RED over the internet to get new firmware, it goes dead. I suggested that before for rental use, if the camera is rented for 3 days, it can be set beforehand to go dead on the 5th day.

Another idea, would be for the camera to save a hidden "vrius" in the data that could "phone home" to tell RED where the camera is in the world, without that "virus" talking to RED, the R3D would not open.

On top of that, maybe a special safe made for the camera that can be bolted to the foundation or vehicle frame with built in de-humidifer.
 
Okay I'm sure this has been mentioned before -- and I'm sure you've given them hell -- but WTF is up with the resort security???? Not exactly easy or low-risk to steal so much from such a remote area like this ... I think this little event is going to make people think twice about shelling out money for a high-end destination that does not have better security standards in place.

Maybe Mark if you tell them how much exposure this is getting on the web (and how bad it will look for them) they will be more proactive in assisting with the investigation.

I definitely see them as at least partly responsible.

As a side note, I wonder if camera bags need to be locked shut and then "bike locked" to something that's immobile in the room ... as someone who travels often to third world countries this has really opened my eyes.

I'm going to think twice about leaving an S2 or future Epic unsecured in ANY resort or hotel, no matter how nice ............

I am planing a project for 2011 outside the US, and maybe I should get a "dry bag" to take the camera into the shower with me, along with the passport etc. It would not be good to get out of the shower and "OMG"... not easy to shoot without the camera and lenses, that were on the bed... "what did you see" I was in the shower..., "what did you hear" I was in the shower...

Well, I know you are kinda joking but better safe than sorry! I am certainly going to beef up my own security measures when traveling with any gear in the future. When a big production loses a camera they often have multiple backups. When smaller guys like me travel to location with only one Epic (because of $$$ or just limited availability) then you simply can't afford to lose that camera at any cost.

Mark, I'm praying for a swift discovery and return for your Baby 00006 .....

Mark, I know the feeling of violation that you are experiencing. From reading the posts, many of us have been there.

To think, while you and your family were sleeping. Outrageous.

If it helps at all, know that the entire RED community is with you. We shared the euphoria as you took possession of the first EPIC in the wild - and now we find ourselves sharing in the loss - with disbelief, anger (albiet with relief that your family was not attacked in the process).
It's personal - because we are a community.

Let's trust that 2011 will see #6 come home.


Addendum:
If only we could start by neutering the bastards after they are caught. I think I have an old, rusty exacto knife around here somewhere.

Please tell me you're kidding. You want the cops to kick in the door of a guy in *DETROIT* based on a joke tweet about a camera that was stolen in *FRANCE* less than 24 hours ago? Hell, why not go after everyone who's made a joke about it today? That'd be me, nearly all of my friends, and a few thousand other people on the internet.

Lighten up. It's a camera. Special? Sure, maybe. But it's just a piece of hardware. It's insured.

Dry bag seems a little excessive. I just did a film in Iquitos in September with an expensive film camera in my charge. After one of our motocycles got stolen and then attempted ransom back to us, I started getting paranoid about leaving stuff behind. But at the end of the day on a long production it's pretty hard to keep your gear with you all the time. You're gonna need to get a few beers with the boys and the camera package can't come. Chains and padlocks don't stop serious thieves, only slows them down, so the best thing to do is to check in gear with the porters at a local hotel. Make friends with all of them, get production to hire them as extras, and tip them well every time.

I think why most of us are a bit fired up about this is the way it happened. Mark's family was in the house and had things taken a bad turn somewhere people could have been hurt. So it goes beyond a camera. That can and will be replaced. Had any of his family or himself been killed, that's something you can't replace. So, that's why the short fuse on the jokes.
 
I'm seriously going to put a motorcycle alarm on my Scarlet/Epic any and all times it's not in my field of view.

They've got some pretty functional ones with pagers and all..
