Aw. Crap. And here I was thinking you were all into image science and stuff. Now you turn to Alchemy. :banghead:

Next you'll tell us you'll add Octarine to our images?

But Alchemy... Lead to Gold. I'll take that.

Curiouser and curiouser... so right now I:

0. SetColor and Gamma Spaces to REDcolor 2, REDlogFilm

1. WB off chart
2. Lift, then Gain, then Gamma (in that order... am I normal?)
3. Rinse And Repeat #2 until ~satisfied
4. Curves
5. Sat, Contrast, Brightness
6. rarely, I mess with Shadow
7. Adjust R/G/B if neccesary
8. Revisit Lift, Gamma, Gain if desired

9. Present to DP

I rarely mess with FLUT.... or DRX.... or ISO, or Sharpness, or Denoise, or Detail

Am I doing it wrong? Also, where would Alchemy fit into this order of operations? Tips highly appreciated... always trying to learn how to get better images out of the RAW files!!

linux version would be apreciated
ps. and more with the incoming of a professional opensource editor for linux...

SDK for sure...

Jim

Hi Jim,

while you say SDK:

When will we see ACES support in terms of 16 bit half float exports?
We'd love to process material with the original ISO settings, but at the same time want to transport overexposure / underexposure levels to turn them back when desired in compositing / grading.
Right now we are very limited with the current export options, which are all clipping colors depending on the settings. Half float format would save everyones butts here.

Our workaround is currently to pregrade in RCX Pro to create RMD files that protect all overexposure / underexposure values by compressing them into the exported data range (using e.g. another ISO or contrast etc.) and the "decompress" or "stretch" the color range in the post production pipeline to a float format, mainting deep colors. Think of ISO being 0..1, actually recorded values being -0.5...+1.5. Then compress recorded values between 0..1 range to be able to export (because everything below 0 or above 1 will be clipped). The receiving app reads the data from 0..1 and stretches it to fit in -0.5 to +1.5 for instance.

Integer formats like TIFF16 don't really support values outside "visible black to white" range, per definition. With DPX you "may" be able, but its reserves are often too limited.

I am not aware we can export anything in half float, e.g. to EXR, yet - can we? Don't think so.

Any idea when that will hit us?

I hope you announce ACES support to be available on November 3rd :)

Cheers,
Axel

REDCODE RAW is one of the most important things about RED. What you can do with RAW is extremely important. RAW tools will continue to grow.

Shooting an RGB codec locks you into a box. Don't do that. There are just too many advancements coming that limiting yourself just seems silly.

Alchemy is a tool for RAW that will make you rejoice why RAW matters.

Jim

Thank goodness, I was already going to post to people that with the Red software, now including this, and the Lytro like capability you have just announced, Red is the most future proof quality cinema camera on the market to buy. Good on you, the software suite emphasis and Lytro like announcement is out of left feild. Congratulations, your baby is going to rock (just please for the low end, 4k one of these days).

Thanks

Wayne.

Ecxciting, free, progressive upgrades....
Thanks Graham, Jim, RED, awesome.

No, NOT AT ALL. I am saying that PROCESSING RAW needs to be a little simpler for the masses if Scarlet and EPIC are to truly transcend the MAJOR productions shooting that kit.
RAW and REDCODE are the most potent digital recording media devised. RAW rules. But the 1000's and hopefully 10.000's or 100.000's of RED RAW customers aren't colorists.

A few safe and artistic grade presets would help legions make the transition to RAW. These people all shoot BAKED in WYSIWYG. RAW is beyond foreign to them.

As a soon to be at last RED user, with predominantly a background in acting/directing/writing - I appreciate your sentiment Tim.
I am studying up and looking forward to developing my REDCODE RAW workflow, and I'll get there, I will have to. I don't need idiot proof, (REALLY :)) but any leg up is always appreciated as Indie often means jack of all trades of course, and so can be a little daunting. Though it may be a piece of cake, looking forward to finding out. - and luckily challenges are always easier anyway when the rewards are so great! :)

You guys never stop to impress me. Improving so fast in such big steps and then giving it away for free is just unbelievable.

ok, everyone is impressed about something no one saw: this is called faith on one side, marketing on the other.

... but can we see some samples now?

Always great emotions and great progress, with a Red Team;)

thanks
i wait new Alchemy
