I'd have to agree with this. I think REDCODE RAW is the true magic of RED, and is often overlooked by the industry as the thing that separates RED from others. glad to know that RED themselves fully understand its importance and continue to push it forward......

You must be new around here.

It was a rhetorical comment. I know why everyone gets excited. Red "users" often cannot fathom why Red gets a bad reputation from an outside perspective. This is a categorical example. This is all hype with no substance aside from Jim's word. This doesn't mean Jim is any way lying or misleading. However, I think many people, Redusers or not, have had enough of the hype machine over the past couple of years re Scarlet, et al.

Let's get excited about products and services are that far more concrete.

I'll forgive your ad hominem though.

Uh... so far, RED does have a reputation for some pretty astounding technology. I guess people get excited the same way they look forward to the next iPhone or iPad. Until they are disappointed a couple of times in a row, I suspect the excitement will continue. And, it just might be justified some of the time.

Every once in a while someone announces "RED has a bad reputation", in the face of overwhelming evidence that RED's reputation is sound and enviable.
Scarlet is late as far as RED's intentions are concerned, and yet it is early as far as the rest of the industry's ability is concerned.
"Hype"? RED has "substance" - PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE - for most of us trust RED when it comes to delivering even its most ambitious announcements.
Maybe these messengers really mean to say "RED is a bad ass". I'd have to agree with that. ( :

I assume it's that others like myself here in Australia, still regularly have encounters with people who are distinctly
anti RED? Some report bad experiences, some clearly have no idea at all - but it's not an un popular viewpoint in my experience. Nor in life is it uncommon to try and snub the new kid on the team, whose kicking goals left right and centre. I can only speak from my own microcosm of course, but it's clear that RED certainly seems to polarise people.

Of course we all know it is entirely ridiculous that people can take the stances some of them do while meanwhile, some of the best film makers on the planet are all using RED. Is there a bigger film in the world being made than the Hobbit right now? I don't believe so. I bet the hobbit out grosses any other contenders. But that's people for you.

Anyhow, back on topic.

Best
Lliam

Not just in Australia, it's still here in Hollyweird, too. Last week on a shoot the post super told me "RED footage looks shitty until you mess with it in post, Alexa's a lot better". Whatever, learn about the power of RAW. As RED continues kicking ass, and as people learn what we have and how to take advantage of it, those voices sound more and more foolish.

As soon as the first test/frankenstein R1s came out, I was onboard. I'm glad I was- we've gotten a lot of work because we embraced this massive change/disruption that RED represents, even though I could barely afford our R1. And sure, I'll admit that as rabid RED defenders and evangelists we all tend to sound a bit like Apple fans at times, like Terry says (cool photo!)... but that's a good thing for sure- that a camera company could engender so much emotion, positive and negative. Wow. Who'dathunk it?

Yes. I have had a similar experience. Some are overtly hostile others just ignorant. A producer recently said that they would shoot with an alexa rather than the red because they had a big enough budget to afford the Alexa.

graeme, what say you to the title of 'red wizard' or 'red alchemist'?

i think that would be cool.

Ha! The old "we're paying more, so it must be better!" mindfuck. Lovely! But I'm not surprised. Some producers are real dummies... had one years back, before the RED, tell me he wanted to shoot a feature on HD because "then you don't have to light". Yeah, riiiiight!

How does one respond to the level of idiocy of that guy who went Alexa for purely monetary reasons? I have but one idea: triple your rates, since they think $$$ always = better

:-P Ah well, and so it goes...

The bottom line is my professional career is not directly or indirectly tied to the business RED is in. However, I do run into people (actually last week) who are independent owner/operators who sound off about RED in a negative light.

FUD

I can't imagine anyone being loosely connected to this "industry" and being surprised or concerned that there is a negative vibe in one direction or an other.
Why they would come onto Reduser and point this out in such vague terms is anyone's guess. Who'd ever dream that there just might be negative forces pointing at anything from
Film to Sony to DSLR's to 4:2:2 to Alexa or Canon or ... you name it. Let's keep it real. If you feel there is a bona fide universal issue that is not based on FUD then describe it. Or take a look at RED's achievements and put the negativity into perspective.

We have people who like us and people who don't. What is your point?

I spoke of a feature that will be included in REDCINE-X Professional next week. No hype, just an excited announcement. No waiting forever. Next week.

Again... what's your point?

Chuck... read my 1st post again. Tell me exactly what you don't like about it. I've read many of your previous posts... and there are lots of things I don't like about them.

Jim

Indeed. I've been here for three years and yet my only purpose is to spread misinformation.
