  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Alchemy...

Sweet. Got a grade coming up soon for a music video I shot. Might do it in RCX-P and try this out.

If I was to take a guess, I'd say alchemy is some kind of auto image correction, where the slider adjusts how dramatic the effect is . It'll probably alter the highlights/shadows or otherwise the general contrast of different elements in the scene to make the footage look better. It'll compliment all the other grading tools, so it won't be an auto-grade feature, but just another tool in the grading arsenal.

That's my guess, otherwise I have no idea what it could be.

Jim, there's a short film I'm going to process on Thursday evening, any chance of getting it by then? :-)

Time to dig out the old footage... again! This should give me something fun to do between the 1st and th 3rd =) Thanks Red!

Once you make sure WB and FLUT are right, the 1st thing you will do is to set Alchemy. Then set a curve and adjust color.

Alchemy is a mandatory adjustment. It will be right in the middle of everything you do.

Jim

Jim is happy. He has something to announce before November 3rd... :)
By the way, sounds nice to me. New tool is always welcome, especially when it is free!

I am a Qt certified developer and I like what you are doing with in RCX-P. ;)

Every DSLR owner already know what RAW processing is for photography. Moving images are the same. I can't imagine a user looking at RED that didn't already "develop" a few RAW stills.

I don't think acceptance is a problem.

I think REDcode RAW, more than resolution, is the reason I'm looking at RED. And I absolutely LOVE the sensor clipping tools we get on the monitor.

I REALLY HOPE that makes it onto the Scarlet platform.

I guess that's all you need to know: don't clip the signal, and you're good. If you're shooting available light and there's no way around clipping, then you've got the tools you need to do it selectively,

Hey Jim this week I have been learning Redcine X Pro with Final Cut Pro X and I am amazed at how easy it is to create fabulous content quickly...can't wait to try Alchemy.

Any word on how it will effect .R3D support in Premiere Pro? (That is until Adobe updates the importer)

Can we us Alchemy, save a R3D trim + RMD, and open in Premiere Pro CS5.5?

Grade as much as you can in REDCODE RAW... including Alchemy, before doing anything in an RGB codec. Make that the last thing you do.

Easy to understrand.

Jim

I hope when we asked for film response emulation you didn't set your sights this low:

I was thinking more like Vision 2 or Porta. ;)

So you want lower resolution and grain?

Jim

Awesome Jim, can't wait to see what it is!

Here's my guess - Celluloid Film has been THE GOLD standard for the past 100 years and REDs mission has been to offer a true replacement for it without all the flaws of film (grain, hairs in gates, overnight processing, etc...) - does this "Alchemy" slider make this closer to reality?? F...Emulation?? :)

All the best,
