OT:I've never understood the hatred toward QuickTime. It saves me hours of wasted time on a nearly daily basis. Just today we finished encoding a 9 hour video (yes, one video 9 hours long, it was a training video) as Sorenson Video 3 codec QuickTime. The encode took about 40 hours due to it being a 2 pass encode and Squeeze being SLOW. Upon reviewing the final encode we discovered a patch of bad frames that was in the original and some audio glitches. Within 1 hour I had patched the bad frames swapped them in and swapped out the audio track, all in QuickTime Player Pro. Then I fixed a minor drift in the audio with QT Sync. Then I just re-saved the file as a flattened movie, 5 minutes later I'm ready to go, no re-encode needed. To top it all off the footage I was working with was all encrypted with MediaKeys (a DRM-like technology), no need to re-encrypt. Had we used any other technology, we would have had to blow another 40 hours on a re-encode. And possibly more if find another flaw.

Even functions as simple as trimming footage off the end/beginning/middle of an already compressed/encoded video. Or adding/subtracting multiple audio video tracks. Or merging 29.97 and 23.96 videos into a single file. I've even used it as a quick and dirty subtitler. Always simple, fast, and no re-encoding needed. I run into things like this daily, and on the rare occasion I'm working with AVIs or WMVs instead of QT movies... well that's when the cursing an inferior technology comes out. I just hope Apple doesn't %*# up QuickTime X by removing some of these powerful functions.

Yes, these editing functions of QuickTime Pro are well hidden, but very very powerful and a huge time saver. I highly recommend people learn the true power of QuickTime Pro.

Thank you for that. My sentiments exactly. I'm an editor with very little free time to fark around. Quicktime saves my ass DAILY. I've been using QT and FCP for several years now and I've never encountered QT killing hardware or software (with the small exception of that AE render issue that got resolved relatively quickly). Other than some gamma issues (which there are workarounds now) I love Quicktime.

I also find it funny that folks complain it doesn't behave well on PCs. Yeah, well I can't remember the last time I've been able to open ANY proprietary WMV format on a Mac ... at all. I love that PC mentality...Macs have to play everybody....no one has to play with Mac.

A feel a flaming coming on....

Ran into some last minute bugs that are just being mopped up.. the Alpha team will test it over the next couple days and then the public release is on track for Friday.. sorry for the delay guys :)

wont give details out just yet in case one of those details change. :)

Premiere is a really strong editing app, I would put it along side FCP any day, I find it better.

Jarred, will the Alpha/beta have sound support? or not yet?

Real Men edit on Premiere. :gun:

Well said, mate!!!
I`ve used Premiere for all projects so far and I like it very much - especially the ability to virtually load all types of media without conversion saved me lots and lots of time...ok, except that it doesn`t load mp3, but that`s something I can accept...

If this is in response to me, I'm a huge Premiere fan, I'm currently using it. I've used it for the last 10 years, and I'll continue to use it. I'm wondering about Red's plugin, not Pr.

It will load MP3. Are you running a trial? because the MPEG features aren't enabled in the trial, so you can't use mp3 in the trial. In the full blown app you can bring in MP3's just fine.

I'd say Real Men go out and shoot, and have a Beer afterwards :)

Leave the editing to those white skinned guys :w00t:

EDIT/Clarification: I meant to say: light skinned, as from sitting inside editing all day long, as opposed to having a tan from being outside and filming. My bad.

This isn't a presidential election, no need to bring race in to this discussion

I was totally kidding! Sorry if I scared you, I'm definitely one of those sickly creatures that's behind a computer too much :)

pretty much the best OT type comment I have ever heard on this board!!!!

ROTFLOL!

Sorry, that was not how I meant it... (And if I had, that would mean that I'd be editing... )

And regarding the best OT comment - I think that one was given to the guy on the Red Ranch thread asking about female chat partners, lol.

Anyhoo... enough OT for now. But then, while we wait for Friday, how about that unfinished Birger discussion on Waffles vs. Pancakes?

I am kidding.

No Martin, yours is best.

Maybe because my skin is whiter then sour cream when I edit for months?:spidy: :spidy:
