  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Adobe support...

Be aware that there are some limitations to the trial version.

Can I get a thread summary here, please?

Are R3D files going to open in Premiere Pro and AE CS3? Will any update be needed for the Adobe software? Is this a patch or something?

I think that, yes, this does mean opening a R3D in Premiere and AE. It will probably be a plugin or something that RED will provide (doesn't sound like Adobe is distributing it).

Directly related to the notion that r3d is a "read-only" format, do not expect to be able to do effects (keying, multi-layer layer composites), transitions (dissolves/cross-fades), PIP, etc. in your Windows-based NLE's timeline before you do some type of a transcode on the camera clips.

For full flexibility in editorial/FX pipelines, one will very likely need to transcode the footage to:

1. an "offline resolution" QT or AVI
2. an "intermediate" CODEC such as Cineform
3. or a standard finishing format such as DPX, TIFF or uncompressed QT/AVI

Also, embedded r3d audio support won't be there at first.

I expect that with the SDK now available (and "firewall" access possible down the road giving access to the pre-demosaic'd actual sensor data), there will shortly be many new editorial workflows to pick from depending on the type of project or post methodologies

If we set our expectations accordingly, I think we will enjoy nice progress along these lines.

As a working editor in Hollywood I think everyone should be warned that no studio will currently approve a Premiere Pro editing solution. They're BARELY accepting FCP workflows.

It's still AVID, AVID, AVID.

Premiere Pro enlists giggles and laughs amongst the brass. Trust me. I know. It's annoying and condescending. But it's reality. FCP still gets a raised eyebrow.

Just sayin'.

Thanks. Do we have an ETA on when this is going to happen?

within a week from jim's post on 7/30

so this week?

Nope - R3D is the RAW data from the sensor. In order to do anything with them, they need to be converted in a useable form. Just as with still RAW images from DSLR's - the RAW files are read-only... :)

If you wanted to do motion tracking, you don`t actually need to do a debayer, the RAW data array would be perfectly useable for that purpose and would be much quicker than doing a debayer first. I don`t think we`ll see RAW greyscale CFA output from Red, but letting developers get hold of this data eventually, internally in their software, could actually be very cool, and the data invisible to the end user of such software. Just getting my SDK wishlist in early!

If hope direct CFA data is on the cards for a future SDK, as I`d like to implement motion tracking algorithms that can work directly from an R3D file, without a demosaic first

"Bollywood" represents an entire country. "Hollywood" is one city.

I agree with what Lucas said, with the only exception being visual effects work. Large amounts of that work is done in various places throughout the world today, including London, Wellington NZ, San Francisco, and Vancouver, among others, all at the highest level. But he is quite right when we're talking about "core" post production, namely editing, sound editing and mixing, and digital intermediate work. That is very concentrated in the Los Angeles area, especially for studio pictures.

I was just pointing out that Bollywood is a much larger operation, with more editing and sound mixing taking place each year, and more saleries paid. If you add up all the films that are made in America, and not just in Hollywood, this is still the case by a massive margin.

Under Preferances in CS3 make sure you guys set it to "Memory" when editing your 4K files as PPRO is going to crash on you with memory problems and this should help a bit.

Unless the Red team has experienced otherwise...?

Other than that I am happy about native support. :-) Cant wait!!! Thanks to everyone.

Content is king. Have anyone watched a 'original' baliwood movie? all of their 'Big Budget movies' are spin off of hollywood movies. One way or another is a copycat. Zero innovation. Hollywood has the best script writers : i'e. original stories, original ideas.

it will take years to create, seconds to copy.

With all due respect, can we stick to the point? no hollywod nor bollywood BS, just SDK and 3rd partie's development please?
