  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

ADOBE PREMIERE 6 --- I HAVE NO WORDS ....

If you are installing on a Mac, make sure to do the following:

Make sure you are on 10.7.3 (Can't speak to 10.6.8)
Download CUDA driver 4.2.7
Download Red Rocket driver 1.4.19

If using Black Magic, get driver version 9.5.1

If using Rocket, follow Karl's suggestion and select RR in source settings.

Should see smooth sailing from there.

Anybody using a BMD Ultrastudio 3D thunderbolt? I can't get it to work. Works fine in After Effects but in Premiere nothing works via transmit. (Mac)

Did you turn it on in the Playback pref? Are you using 9.5.1? Which Mac OS are you on?

Thanks for the tip Karl. I guess it isnt a default setting across all imported clips.
Eric, once you set it within source settings on one clip, it stays engaged for any clips....just need to make sure you don't open RCX then it gets taken away by RCX....only one program can use the RR card at a time.

Yes it's turned on in the playback preferences. I'm on lion 10.7.3 - using driver 9.5.1

When I check the Blackmagic design option in the playback preferences my monitor connected through HDMI starts looking for a signal but can't see one, it's def getting something because I see the monitor trying to settle on a resolution but it can't.. I have to uncheck the option as I don't want to mess up my monitor.

mine was doing the same thing. Open a blackmagic sequence and drop the files on the timeline and see if it plays. This is the only way it works for me...

Are you able to edit full rez with a RR and a decent Mac in CS6?

Yes that works but stuck with 1080p sequence.

1/2 res for me and my old Mac Pro. Actually I tend to edit at 1/4 though. that's enough during edit for me. CS 6 is remarkably snappy.

Probably because the maximum output resolution of the hardware is 1080p. Unless the hardware has some built-in downscaling option, I'm not sure that you'll get HW monitoring out of a 2K/4K sized sequence. I'd ask someone @ BlackMagic though.

Just got the 16 core/32 thread hackintosh working properly for Premiere. All my benchmark tests used 32 threads. Adobe only seems to use half the threads (16 cores) instead of all 32 threads. And yes hyper-threading and everything else is enabled.

I assume they wrote the software for the existing macs only and had not planned for the new macs (if indeed the new macs are on the way).

I have to see why proes isn't in there, but a quicktime 4 minute 5K clip is encoded (5120) in less than 3 minutes.

First let me say I am a Mac Pro user and have been happy with its performance when running CS5/6.

The following is based on lengthy discussions with a turn key system manufacturer that up until recently built both PC and Mac systems specifically for editing, with lots of hands on experience with Adobe CS Premiere.

The problem with hyper threading on the Mac is a result of faulty and limited implementation in the Apple operating systems.

Ive seen lots of CPU use displays while running Premiere on a PC. All 32 threads have been evident. While Windows has its own sets of challenges, in the hyper threading arena they out perform Mac OS.

Not interested in a computer war, just stating the facts as they have been shared with me.

Tom, the hyper-threading is working perfectly and shows and RUNS all 32 threads in OTHER apps and benchmarks on the same machine and OS X install. When I encode with CS6 in windows 7, all 32 threads are maxed out at near 100%. The same encode in the CS6 on MacOS only maxes out 16 of the 32 threads, even though all 32 threads are working as they should with other apps on the same machine.

I see Joseph, I thought you were referring to all operations when using PrP. I know lots of work is relegated to the GPU if you have a CUDA card installed. Exporting seems to be the most crucial process to speed up in my experience. But regardless, my source says Windows has a better implementation of HT and I respect their knowledge and experience on the subject. :D

I agree.

Over the years due to my 3D background Ive always thought this was basic knowledge when it came down to pure CPU guts.
Just saying since the only reason most of us stay away from Windows is the baggage it carried from Windows NT to Windows XP SP3.
I can honestly say that Windows 7 is a stable OS and thats coming from old Apple Fan Boy :)

I have loved working with my Mac Pro, but am chomping at the bit to make a healthy switch back to PC to give CS6 a little power boost. The systems I want just seem to cost so dam much. :D
