  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Lens test RED 17-50 2,8?

I saw it on a projector the other day and it looked pretty good, the coverage was great, it looked like it was Full Frame from about 19mm and up and the resolution was good. I would say a major improvement over the 18-50 that it replaces. I plan on getting 2 of them for a 3d rig ASAP.

Hey john, how were the mechanics and weight? Did u get to handle it?

I did not pick it up but the gearing felt a lot smoother then the 18-50.

The 17-50 is an incredible little Zoom, great build, and great gearing on the lens, even so not light, it felt not heavy at all, well especially since I did some work with the 18-85, he he.

This is definitely a world away form the 18-50, no comparison to be made here, this is the PRO line of lenses, and it shows in the details, construction and image quality.

Looking forward to get this babies, they can make great components to a SrD rig, with the Epic-X :~).

But for now they will shoot on the R1-MX.

Comparing a Zoom to a Prime, is never to be taken literally, no matter how good a zoom can get, it will just simply never be as goo as a Prime, too many more variables go in to the construction of a zoom, and the moving elements to come to a zoom, breathing, barrel distortion, chromatic aberration, flaring, etc.but the most important thing is when zooms are color matched to the Prime, however for what is worth the 17-50 showed really great sharp clear images, when it start shipping comparison side by side with Prime can be made.

Was the lens not full frame at wider settings than 19mm? :(

This shot is with the 17-50

No, not tested yet that I know of. I would assume the lack of responce means that there isn't anything out there yet. As soon as it rolls out or gets thoroughly tested, there will be a lot of buzz. You won't miss it.

While Ketch is technically accurate in his statement that primes and zooms are different animals the Angie Optimos are so frakkin' clean that they outperform all but the very best primes in most common metrics. I consider them the greatest achievement in optical design I have ever seen.

Once I have an EPIC in hand I am very interested in trying the RED Pro 17-50 and the Optimo Rouge DP 16-42 in a cinema verité rig for guerilla shooting. One of the truly revolutionary aspects of the new form factor is that when a layman sees the EPIC with a lens like the RED Pro 17-50 it could easily be taken for a beefy still camera. Oh the possibilities.

Thanks for informative answers. I know that a zoom can´t be compared to a fixed focal length, but may the 17-50 be about equal to for example variable primes or another of the zooms with lesser cost than optimo 16-42?

Do anyone know if 17-50 are able to color match the Tokina 11-30?
:)

Okey, so that´s why. :)
I read about a earlier release but I must have missed something. Sorry my friends.
Do anyone know the new release date?
/R

Correct Blair, I am accurate in my statement thru years of use and testing of basically all Primes vs. Zooms available from Still "Canon, Nikon, Hassy, to Cine lenses like Master Primes and Master Zooms, Red Pro Primes, and Red Pro Zooms, and off course the Angeniux, and in this I have not only agree with you on the IQ of the Angeniux but also on they provide incredible tools for S3D rigs, do to their mechanical qualities and ability to calibrate.

Ronnie, no one really knows the release date, we called the other day. We have our money waiting in full...but they have delayed the lens a bit, but have no firm release date. I was supposed to be out by now so, I hope soon, sold my zeiss standard set in anticipation....

Thanks, Jarred, Roberto, Ryan and Shane. Now I feel calm and looks forward to the release of the lens. :)
/Ronnie

heard the lenses have made it into the wild, anyone got to shoot with it yet?
