  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

A very interesting theory about future of RED, Jim, Ted and Cioni...

I'm originally from Oklahoma, and I have an old friend that still makes horseshoes for a living. My cousin rides horses too... I think if you start to connect the dots... Maybe cars were just a 100 year fad?

I vote this post of the week!

the only thing that has changed at RED.... the way we talk about what we are doing.

No more song and dance... we drilling down and letting our products speak for themselves, as really , at the end of the day, should be all that really matters.

Viva la RED. :)

How I love this post.

I was thinking today about the Dragon. As I've got to meet the beast up close and personal. I've shot it. And the thing I keep thinking about is ... here's a camera that needs ZERO hype. ZERO.

Because when you shoot it - look at the files - it's just right there. It exceeds your expectations and makes you all warm and fuzzy inside.

People can post whatever they want on CML or whatever blog - but the images speak for themselves. And they speak volumes.

This is actually a good alternate "post of the week".

Now... Look at Phils post on the MotionMount... :)

I really don't think that article has anything to do with RED specifically even though it appears to be the focus.... it is written by a die-hard celluloid purist and is trying to give breath to a resurrection of film, which I have absolutely no problem with as their motivation apart from the misdirection... It's what they do.

FWIW... RED is just fine... In the last month our team has become much stronger and there is so much incredible stuff coming down the pipe both near and far that it is hard to not talk about.. Which, by the way, is really the only thing that has changed at RED.... the way we talk about what we are doing.

As someone who has photographed 33 features on celluloid (Kodak, Fuji and yes Agfa) I agree with Jarred that this was a film lover's lament..... And he (?) simply needed a "thing" to initiate his opinion.....
All the digital platforms are alive and well and jokeying for position. Red, because of this forum and being at the forefront of Digital Cinema made its leaders known and made them real... Jim, Jarred, Ted, Deanan, Graeme....
I mean Ted left Aja for Red. Yet Aja is alive and well....

So while the competition is fierce, we are all better for it.....

Let's just go out and make films.....

Cheers,

Peter

Peter, I'm definitely with you... Everyone quit yammering and go shoot something!

Future of Red? It's been quite clear, Red IS the Future, has been for awhile now, which also makes it a target, good thing its a moving target :)

Okay fine! If I have too :)

Seriously though. Personally I know the most important work of my career will be shot on Dragon. A good chunk already shot on Mysterium-X. I started with film. I love film. I hate film. Those things are actually the reason that led me to shooting on Red. And I know I'm not the only one.

Have to agree with Phil, I love film, and hate film. Having shot on everything from a Bolex to Moviecam, I just love the fact that I can throw my Epic in a backpack and go anywhere, it´s ready to shoot within seconds of taking it out and in the very same back pack I can carry my "lab" to instantly view and grade my footage. That is still just mindboggeling.
Still remeber the days where I would break my back carrying a SR3 to location, then having to wait days to see the results

Evidently any one talking about RED not been on their BEST ever, have yet to see what DRAGON can do, and we are seen just that in the LAB in which we are now processing my short film "The RED dress" this guys did not wanted to take in the project for various reasons...

HOWEVER...

As soon as the first clips started rolling...

They IMMEDIATELY changed their mind...

With DRAGON, it is clear that RED has at last truly OUTPERFORMED anything that EXIST today as a IMAGE Capture tool... FILM included... PERIOD!!

Sorry, but this article had nothing about RED's future in it and wasn't even interesting. He's just trying to make you think there is something going on with RED, something bad. But we know better, don't we? ;)

+1 on Ketch's post, i have no doubt you're right. Looking forward to see your short and to play with a Dragon one day.

The article is just another "digital will never replace film" wishful thinking spin. Consider the source and their motivations.

I've known Jim since 1984, been supporting Jim and Red since mid-2005, been a close friend of Jarred since 2005, been a close friend of Ted since 2005, been a close friend of Michael since 2006, and been a ground zero inner-circle supporter of Red since long before Red was even announced as a company.

Based on the above info on my connection to Red here's my impression of the Cinelicious article's "dot connecting": Its HOGWASH!!

My take on the situation:
Jim is simply not posting here like he used to, and he's concentrating on behind the scenes planning, coordinating, R&D, etc. He intimated that in his own words here on Red User. Jarred has many times over proven himself as a super-talented leader and visionary to be the daily upfront President of Red. Ted has done a great job in being the mobile mouthpiece of Red to the world, and now he'll do a super job of consulting for Fox. Michael has been on the forefront of evolving the post workflow for digital, and has now grown LightIron from coast to coast, and thus naturally needs to be facile in posting footage from all digital cameras.

The entire universe, and everything in it, is dynamic, not static - thus change and evolution is natural in everything (including business). Rest easy, Red is still in super-capable hands, and is not only alive and well - but will be continually into the future!

Yes Jarred, "Long Live Red!"

Citing the fact that a movie shot on film won the Toronto International Film Festival and using that to argue that film has a future, shows a total lack of understanding of the Film Festival circuit and selection and award process. Making movies is an Art and a business. As a business the future of filmmaking lies totally with digital. Studio heads who green light projects on film will be putting their necks on the line. Right now the workflow for film is ... transfer that stuff to Digital ASAP and get the film out of the loop. There will soon be no film projectors, save maybe for any Quentin may have in his theatre. No one will be using film in film school. Like Heisenberg, film is dead, it just don't know it yet!

Why not admit that it is a question of taste?
I'm doing photography, digital and film. Digital wins for ease of use, convenience, and workflow. But I always find medium format and large format films results a lot sexier.
I see a lot of guys on all the forums using microscopes and charts and stuffs all day long to obtain the sharpest image. I personally hate super sharp images. But I respect their tastes.
It's not a war.
