  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

A very interesting theory about future of RED, Jim, Ted and Cioni...

Twisted in my opinion. There is also a CML thread on this by the way.

highly speculative at best

"Maybe the RED Camera will just be an 8-year blip on the history of cinematography?"

why should it be ? RED cameras are more sought after than ever with the DRAGON slowly starting to make its rounds.

Cameras are like cares....there are a lot of different brands and essentially like a car getting you from A to B they all take pictures...yet there are people who prefer mercedes and others who like chrysler or toyota.

RED has proven itself as a solid camera manufacturer...the list of productions shooting RED grows more and more impressive every week.
I see RED a little bit like Apple....many many years ago there was a swedish kid called Nokia who was kinda cool but lazy and arrogant in its dominating (market) place ...arrogance grows ignorance.
All of a sudden Apple came around the corner...with newer sneakers...new outfit...and a whole bunch of new tricks up its sleeve (Iphone) which the swedish kid couldn't do.....now Nokia is pretty much gone and no one really cares anymore.
RED is a little bit like APPLE....it gave the established guys who said film will last forever a run for their money and caused a fantastic change in the industry....why should this journey be over ? The RED guys are consistently working on improving their gear and inventing new functions.
What has Panavision...for many many years the absolute giant and rolls royce of camera manufacturers achieved in the digital market in the last 5 years apart from the Genesis (what the hell is a genesis ?) and that was part of a SONY colab.
Does it really matter as long as it is a choice ?
if someone can afford to shoot 35mm and thinks its better...good on them...let them shoot 35mm just like some people prefer a chrysler over a BMW or honda.
Just because Jim stepped down doesn't mean the end of a company, people need to give Jarred some credit, just because Jim was always the face of RED doesn't mean Jarred wasn't significantly involved from the start. Steve Jobs is gone and Apple is still standing. I love my RED and I hope RED will be here for many years to come.

Cinelicious is known to be a go-to place, when it comes to telecine work. So, I would say there is a bit of film bias there...

haha well one hint is the hashtag #vivacelluloid at the bottom of the article.

I've heard people attempt to declare the death of film, but I think this is the first I've heard someone attempt to declare the death of digital.

I am equally saddened as I am frustrated with how recent transitions at RED have not only been misunderstood, but blatantly mis-quoted by notable industry professionals. As a entrepreneur, I know that part of how a company demonstrates strength can be measured by how it changes. My mentors always taught me to celebrate and adapt to opportune change rather than fear it and this is never more important than with change amongst notable leaders.

Jim's influence into in pushing digital cinema boundaries is as prevalent today as it was in 2006 when I met him (see what Jim is cooking up with Dragon tools)
Ted's influence into shepherding emerging technologies and educating the community is as prevalent today as it was in 2001 when I met him (see today's variety announcement)
And my influence into using progressive talent and technology to improve the quality of pictures is as fresh today as it was when I was a student (9 digital features in theaters this evening)

I don't know exactly what Paul's intentions are with his statements, but I am certain that conspiracy theorists are wasting time by connecting dots that don't exist. Not with Jim. Not with Ted. And certainly not with me. I like to make digital cinema look superior to digital video. When Ian and I started coloring with nothing more than Final Touch, RedAlert, and a Power Mac, RED was the only company that wanted the same thing while the luddites laughed at our CF cards, our self-teaching, and our Apple-centric infrastructure.

Everything has changed since then. And it always will. I, for one, count on it.

Kodak is out of bankruptcy? Well, good for them. What the rest of that article is even about?

I really don't think that article has anything to do with RED specifically even though it appears to be the focus.... it is written by a die-hard celluloid purist and is trying to give breath to a resurrection of film, which I have absolutely no problem with as their motivation apart from the misdirection... It's what they do.

FWIW... RED is just fine... In the last month our team has become much stronger and there is so much incredible stuff coming down the pipe both near and far that it is hard to not talk about.. Which, by the way, is really the only thing that has changed at RED.... the way we talk about what we are doing.

No more song and dance... we are drilling down and letting our products speak for themselves, as really , at the end of the day, should be all that really matters.

Viva la RED. :)

Excuse my curiosity, who will be "The Mouth" now that Ted had moved to Fox? It would be difficult for next guy or gal to fill Ted's shoes. He was so fun as the public person of Red.

#VivaRED indeed ;).

As Jarred just said, the products will be speaking for themselves :-)

I'm originally from Oklahoma, and I have an old friend that still makes horseshoes for a living. My cousin rides horses too... I think if you start to connect the dots... Maybe cars were just a 100 year fad?
