  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

A few new things...

I keep seeing this vent on top, what would happen if you where caught in a down pour? would that just flood inside the camera, or is there some design to stop that?

I remember earlier this year someone mentioned that the new cooling system is designed so that no air actually passes over the electronics inside the camera -- so if any water did get in there, the only thing that could be jeopardized is the fan, which is located at the front.

But as that surface will presumably be very hot and the flow of air is in the opposite direction, I wouldn't be too worried. Who's gonna be be the first one to test this out? :scared:

Tom, as I understand it back when a lot of us where asking about the cooling and Jim was explaining it to us, it would seem that it would not be an issue. It sounds like it is closed off, meaning the only thing exposed would be a heatsink, and it would be in a sort of tunnel along with the fan.

Michael Bravin must be busy but it would nice of him to share the courtesy that Jim did by stopping by and tipping his hat to RED

but hell, what do i know?!?

congrats RED .. I cant wait till the REDUSER's put EPIC to the test and we reap the rewards of their art work..

specially excited for tom and

his timescapes web site should get a nice upgrade from EPIC and rubber monkey's assistance(awesome story btw)

congrats Tom and RED again

what could possibly be left for NAB ??

64!!, visions of the future...

This NAB is the NAB.

Aren't smaller chunks of CF cards good to prevent the off chance of something going wrong and we've got all our eggs in one basket?

My quess is the reverse is true. About biggest risk with CF cards is ejecting them before all the file allocation tables have been updated. Bigger cards, fewer swaps, fewer incidents. And then there's always REDUndead.

We'll see how it goes, you're probably right. I'm just very happy to have two options on my SLR, a hotshoe (+adapter) and the PC Sync.

So if one of the other connectors on EPIC or Scarlet has a free, maybe low voltage only, connector that could be used for syncing... awesome.

By the way, the highspeed sync crowd is going to have a ball with Epics and scarlets, though. Make sure you provide a user-definable microsecond software adjustment for when the sync happens. Flash sync at 1/1000th and better should hardly be a problem for the electronic shutter?

Can we also have the equivalent of Canon's (and assume Nikon's) second curtain flash sync. A small, but worthwhile detail for long exposure flash photography. :drool5:

Is it just me? But is the front facing Monitor port gonna be in our way at all times, especially when swapping lenses?

super happy about the 64gb cards though.

Are you actually complaining about the cards being too big?

No need to be so defensive. I wasn't complaining at all, just making a query. A couple of months ago I almost lost all my audio on a flashcard. I was warned never to put all my eggs in a basket so I've been a bit nervous about this since then.

And 64GB is a drop in the bucket of footage/gigabyte-tage when you are talking 20-40TB for a feature.

Thanks guys, I suppose it makes sense that way.

Do I see a new kind of coating on that baby? I like it - no wait ... I LOVE IT! :-)

could if it actually had a physical shutter.... but it don't.

Second curtain flash synch just means the flash fires at the end of the frame exposure rather than the beginning - I would think it was relatively easy to implement in pure electronics and software than with a mechanical shutter. Canon has it as a custom user option in the menus. It just means the motion blur trail precedes the sharp flash exposure which can look more natural when you want that effect.

super happy about the 64gb cards though.

Please take a look at the first photo of the actual prototype on this thread:

You will see the monitor port now faces the rear.. I would seem you can change it as you need too.

No need to get an L-Connector

I know I operate at the lower end of things here on REDUSER but I just finished DIT'ing and 2nd Unit Directing a 90 minute feature where we shot 1.5 TB of footage in total.

Just wanted to say that not everything is set in stone and 64Gb at a time can be a hefty chunk of your movie. Just depends on your shooting style.

That being said, 64 gig cards can't come soon enough...that's almost 60 minutes of 4k hd RC28 for TV doc shoots (off the top of my head, sorry for the bad math)!

32 minutes of 4k

I think I see the corner of a second CF card tucked in behind the 64GIG one. yes?
