  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

a bit disappointed with the 4K coming from the Scarlet

But i don't realy understand most reaction, as a 1920x1080 crop from the 4k Scarlet/Epic/RedOne is still 1920x1080 pixel resolution, so why not compare.
I'm not saying I'm using Epic like that.

Because when you do just that you are also comparing your lens at two different resolutions. your are not only cropping away sensor resolution you also crop lens resolution so it's important to know what you are looking at after you applied the crop. Further more the two different cameras have different sharpen applied. RED material is constructed in a way so you need to apply post sharpening to get the most out of the material, GH1 have sharpening in camera so do not compare the two until you have the same premisses for both cameras... which you can not do, as they have different sized sensors.

Yes. I would love to see a Resolution Chart shot with a scarlet.

BTW The Lens I used is pin sharp was able to Render 36MB from the d800 perfectly

I really interested about this "4k trough the rocket since rocket renders in full resolution is far sharper than CPU renders." is this true? I understand would be faster but Sharper?

I don't know about "far sharper" but those who should know say it is better. There are many threads on it. Please pardon my laziness for not finding them for you.

He just wants 4K that looks as sharp as a 2x2 grid frame made up of HD frames.
4K , if you zoomed in on one of these corners, should look as good as a full 1920 playback of the material.

BTW, here is a still from some 4K I shot last weekend.
It is possible to get insane sharpness, if you know what to do. This is a inexpensive $600 lens ( sigma 8-16 ). The lens is not the limiting factor on sharpness folks.

Here is a crop out of that frame, not resized , real 1:1 pixel resolution here.

Ah ok but why are you cropping lens resolution? Not sure to get it, sorry.

quote from andy "some of the test I had done was cropping some 4K footage to 1080p and comparing it to 1080p Scaled footage comming from FS100 and Hacked GH2"

So what he does is comparing a center 1920x1080 part of the 4k frame with a frame from his GH1... and he find them resolving not so different results when looking for detail...
As he crops the 4k image he is using a smaller part of the lens and by doing so "cropping the resolution of the lens"... in lack of a better term.

Björn, yeah sorry i still don't get it, but that's ok, we agree anyway on the topic of this thread. But I think the center of the lens is the best part of it.

Back to the topic, I think it is quite good that you find the 1920 crop from the Scarlet as good as the full sensor 1920 of the FS100. The benefice is to have the rest of the pixel around. And if you don't need them a resize will get you sharper image, and if you go the the 2k/4k theater you will also see the difference.

Looks pretty good to me :

( crop 1:1 200% blowup ):

remember also these are all on the same size sensor... around, it's not like 4k is being recorded on 4x the size sensor as 1080, thus when you go down to a 1080 crop of a 4k sensor at s35 you are looking at far larger pixels(I think) and are not in effect looking at the equivalent of what a 1080 image will give you out of a s35 sensor.... though I could be horribly horribly wrong.

either way I get plenty of resolution and see a huge difference from 1080 capture, so I'm very happy.

P.s. how were you at redcode 4:1 on scarlet at 4k at 24fps?

I wouldn't say this looks pretty good, but it does look like a raw file should that has no unsharp mask, noise reduction, or grade applied.... and possibly a cheap lens

Ah C´mon! If a cheap lens is used wide open, ok.
But even a cheap Tamron makes tack sharp images at F8, enough for 20 MP DSLRs. Scarlet is roughly 9 MP.

Flat light, un-interesting subject matter, cyan and primary green. I know the question is about resolution but there is more than just sharpness that plays a part in how we perceive "punch", "snap", whatever you want to call it.
