I'm dying to upgrade my scarlet to an epic but the 10k price is (I don't care who you are) expensive. For me, the epic's slow mo is my main reason for the upgrade. The 5K is whatever atm. Is there any program I can go through with Red where I can make monthly payments? On the upgrade page, there is a link to something called "socalleasing". Is going through them a good way to go? I payed off my scarlet upfront so I'm new to loans...

You and I both wish my friend

I opted to get a business card with a 10k limit and no interest for 7 months and am just rushing to pay it off. If you make it in time, no interest. Or you can get financing through say Abelcine, or the place Red lists on their financing tab on Red.com. Lots of places will finance you for a percentage, but no matter how you cut it you have to pay in time no matter who is the devil you deal with. I noticed Citibank has an 18 month no interest credit card, think I am going to get one for my Dragon (Epic is now half paid off since I got it in Sept and with any luck I will own the whole thing soon)

Banks also will cut you deal, if you google red camera financing lots of places even market themselves directly to owner ops like yourself

9.5K can be a lot to stomach, but remember that it's an unbelievable price considering that by the time you invest that much more into your camera, you'll be pretty close in investment as if you had just bought an Epic way back when you decided to buy a Scarlet. You'll notice the difference immediately once you upgrade.

Scarlet and Epic is night and day. They say the chips etc, are the same, but there's a big difference if you ask me.
I only shoot at 4K HD 23.98 RC7.1 with my Epic-X. Can you do this on a Scarlet? Is there any difference at 4K HD 23.98 RC7.1? I might get a used Scarlet for "B" roll.

Yes, Scarlet can do that.

My Epic is less noisy than my Scarlet was, regardless of resolution or compression. For a B cam though, I'd totally consider one.

I have a few questions.

Did both cameras run with nearly the same temperatures and fan-settings?
Did you do the blackshade under exactly the same conditions (temperature)?
Did you really shoot with exactly the same settings on both cameras?
Same firmware-version?
How old is the Scarlet and and how old is the EPIC?

Got samples?

;)

I use my EPIC mainly just for overcranking and like people said its night and day. At 4k/24 same compression I don't see a difference like everyones saying but being able to shoot 5k/96 vs 3k/48 is game changing for my work. Well worth the 9500 and if you're smart easily can be paid off quickly

After using an Epic on and off a few times I'm starting to really appreciate the 5k resolution. on my iMac's 2560x1440 screen, 5k was extremely sharp and clear since it was a perfect 1/2 downscale. Even playing back on a 4k UHD monitor, 5k looks very close to 4k in terms of detail, while the scarlet's 4k looks to be around 3k. I just want to see some Scarlet Dragon footage before I do my upgrade.

If you ask me too. Less noise, better reliability, fewer heat issues (ask around, or ask a busy rental house you trust).

Not to mention: 5K is a much wider field of view. It looks much sharper, nicer focus fall-off - it's simply a bigger chip surface area used for filming. It makes a HUGE difference - forget resolution - it looks way sharper even for the very vast majority of us only mastering in 2K or 1080p 100% of the time.

The more I use the Scarlet at 5K, the more reasons I find to upgrade. Scarlet is a taste of what a post DSLR world looks like. Epic is the reality.

I agree completely, Adam. Shooting 4k on Scarlet to deliver at 4K gives decent results, but shooting 5K on Epic to deliver at 4K makes a huge difference. That's why my Scarlet is headed back to RED today for a makeover to Epic MX.

Congrats Tom, Hoping to do the same early next year.

Rob remind me how the Epic is more stable than a Scarlet ?

In regards to arguing 5k is better than 4k .....thats exactly what dragon upgrade offers. Just many don't care or need "slo-mo".

It strikes me Epic owners should be grateful for this fact, as when the rare times they do need "Sloooooooomooooooo " they'll come knocking on a Epic owners door.

I'll toss this in as I did the upgrade from Scarlet to Epic MX. Yep. It's a chunk of change. But the amount of that chunk of change is less than anything that comes close to competing with the Epic at that price point. My Scarlet was paid off fairly early on so recouping on my investment wasn't exactly in the cards as it became profitable quickly. To me that equaled a deal and a deal worth going for. And it's also important to acknowledge you are essentially getting a brand new camera out of this. $9500 for a 5K digital cinema camera with these specs is really okay. There isn't anything like that.

The big difference I find shooting with Epic over my Scarlet is I'm shooting nearly everything 5K at 5:1 with some variety in there for different frame rates and formats. Sensor size, noise benefits, and resolution gains are a lot of the perks that come with that.

When Dragon comes I'll be shooting 6K through 5K a lot. I don't know if I'll need to explore under 4K. I'll use 3K/2.5K if I want to use S16 glass for any reason, but that's typically not my playground.

I am in the need to upgrade my scarlet but if I do I will be having some serious financial issues.

Simple answer to that: Don't. Just wait until you can do it without those "serious financial issues." Never hurts to be prudent in these matters. My 2 cents.
