Using interfaces and cabling as a means to pace market development, which is what has been going on for some time now, holds back innovation and competition. It becomes a structured advance that is dictated by the big few who always seem to be in control of the new interface specs. If that factor is removed from the equation, then competition should increase and more disruptive technology will emerge.
If a highly complex system (society) is left to chance and easy "disruption" it may easily collaps, either through too rapid technical development outpacing intellectual growth (child with matches) or too frequent drastic changes destabilizing its delicate balance (chaos), or other factors...so speed of its development has to be paced. Market included.
Otherwise you may get a whole generation convinced in its own superiority, although unable to compose an expanded sentence or hold focus of their own mind for more than 2 mins, while updating status to facebank data base and measuring its pulse by an exciting new and attractively designed device reporting to the cloud. Preferably around elections.
A large portion of today's consumer electronics is not meant to last for 15 years.
Typical planned obsolescence is 5-7 year cycles. If by any chance it does last that long, chances are its owner will experience a pleasant sensation by acquiring a new one anyway. The feeling is externally designed.
Many devices have time programmed kill switch circuits built in.
