  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

5k Retina iMac

Using interfaces and cabling as a means to pace market development, which is what has been going on for some time now, holds back innovation and competition. It becomes a structured advance that is dictated by the big few who always seem to be in control of the new interface specs. If that factor is removed from the equation, then competition should increase and more disruptive technology will emerge.

If a highly complex system (society) is left to chance and easy "disruption" it may easily collaps, either through too rapid technical development outpacing intellectual growth (child with matches) or too frequent drastic changes destabilizing its delicate balance (chaos), or other factors...so speed of its development has to be paced. Market included.

Otherwise you may get a whole generation convinced in its own superiority, although unable to compose an expanded sentence or hold focus of their own mind for more than 2 mins, while updating status to facebank data base and measuring its pulse by an exciting new and attractively designed device reporting to the cloud. Preferably around elections.

A large portion of today's consumer electronics is not meant to last for 15 years.
Typical planned obsolescence is 5-7 year cycles. If by any chance it does last that long, chances are its owner will experience a pleasant sensation by acquiring a new one anyway. The feeling is externally designed.

Many devices have time programmed kill switch circuits built in.

Still no machines in anybodys hands? Is Apple actually delivering these machines? Would love to see some real world transcode speeds of Dragon footage from a specced up 5K Imac

It will be around December or so before you see anything. Orders are being delayed one or more weeks, depending on configuration and supply of parts. Only the pre-packaged low-end iMac seems to be available, albeit in very limited quantities.

I concentrate up to several hours at a time. I'm the only person I've heard of able to directly manipulate his low latent inhibition (not that ut matters now that de-mylination and Parkinson like symptoms have shrunk my mind to a fraction of itself). Tonight trying to design was like being a normal engineer, sloppy and frustrating.

However, I think we should have certain things quicker and cheaper, that is true market. Once it is over and done with we are 40 years ahead in ten and 30 years better. My own plan is complete disruption, to have the best now cheaper, to have it functional for a long tine rather than 18 months. It is about serving God and people, not their overlords. What can be done can change the world to a much better place, except, the people themselves are the problem. You do good, and get opposed by self interested stooges left right and center, in the end everybody suffers, even the class of the greedy who think they have more by scheme. They loved themselves so much, they wrecked it. They did not have the love to do good for everyone that did not undeserved it. To pick the best fight for others. People pickup and kill steal and destroy, so much we don't think of it as killing stealing and destroying anymore. They work for their own (them, family, friends, relatives, group, ideals, community or nation. They are inclusively exclusive. Being mentally average, which is not normal.

Of all the people I've met, virtually not one has had real interest in my plans to setup a charitable company that exists to make better products and licensable product designs for people, a true competitor that looks after their workers, community and environment better, and spends most excess profit to improve life. No, they want to sit around and whinge and benote themselves and their mistaken opinions ton the detriment of others. Opposition for the sake of opposing rather than helping, rather than opposing to establish something better. Of which I have mountains of material to use towards this cause.

Maybe I am dying, but it is a crying shame to see all my work go to waste.

A maxed out machine will be here on Wednesday as well. Shooting Scarlet Dragon short film in two weeks so I'll have real experience with it soon.

Mine just arrived. Screen is amazing. Sharper then my macbook pro retina. Setting everything up now.

Michael,

Lucky you ! Would love to see some Dragon 6KHD 5:1 footage full debayer transcode speeds out of Recine X. On the previous model Imac fully specced the best was a fraction faster than 4fps. Thanks in advance.

The Verge has a review up now
Not able to post the link from my iPhone unfortunatley.
They even try 5K Red clips on the thing. Nice write up

Reinforced what I was thinking... it's a fantastic screen and easily worth the base price of the entire base model (and you get a whole bunch of computey bits for free), but if you want to really do work with it you'll want to basically max it out... 1TB Flash storage, i7, 32gb and as much gpu as they're willing to sell you (wish it was more)... and that'll cost you another $2k.

I disagree. I would get this setup for $2999 and buy my own memory: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1086763-REG/apple_z0qx_mf8865_27_imac_with_retina.html

Buying 32 GB of Ram and 1TB of flash from Apple is paramount to burning money :-)

Not a terrible value but 32GB memory limit? What year is this?

Intel has set the Ram limit to 32GB for the desktop platform. That is not Apple. Intel is now using ram as another differential between platforms.

Seen one benchmark report at Mac rumors I think, reporting the top Imac being faster than the bottom Power Mac, but still a long way from the top Power Mac.

Begs the question, can GPU compute power he added through an external box, or can you add Parrallella boards through open cl? Which begs the question can we buy the cheapest 5k and add a server farm of these little boards and render Dragon 6k realtime? Just some thoughts.
