  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

5k Retina iMac

Yes, this 10 bit stuff really makes me want to get one of those.

http://www.engadget.com/2015/10/30/apple-imac-5k-el-capitan-billions-colors/

anyone knows if it's possible on the mac pro and a... Is there no equivalent to the 5k imac screen as a separate screen?

Previously posted link from engadget: https://www.cinema5d.com/5k-imac-10-bit-color/

I quote:

"[UPDATE]: A cinema5D reader reported that he got 10 bit on a Mac Pro with D500 graphics and an Eizo CS230 monitor.
Also, currently it only works within the Preview and Photos applications. If you want to test it out, you could take a 12-bit RAW photo with soft color gradations and take a look. But it’s also important to note that, for now, no other apps, such as Adobe or other editing software, take advantage of this processing, yet. This is just a preview of what’s to come."

(possible on 2014 5K iMacs too)

Hmm.
Interesting to see next smoke on mac.

Anyone know how much faster all around the most recent fully decked out Imac 5k is compared to the first gen Imac 5k?

I read one article that said they bumped up 20% all around from last gen, but I think that was for lower end models. I also read somewhere that the graphics cards, although called something slightly different, might just be the same ones with a new name?!

My plan has been to upgrade and sell as new generations came out, but a few hrs researching online, and looking at the specs, leads me to believe its not going to be much faster...other then the ability to double the ram.

The next 5K iMac refresh with Kaby Lake will be everything you want in terms of performance/hardware bumps and it may pack an HBM GPU as a high-end option or a GPU with high-density GDDR5X as well as a 5K OLED display. It will be the sweet spot for "upgrading" because of the hardware and because the prices for memory upgrades will be lower due to the fact that the everything new will be using DDR4. There are also reports of Apple toying with an AMD-only iMac release in the near future with AMD APUs and GPUs with HBM or a possible iMac Pro with a monster pro-grade AMD APU with HBM.

Cool thanks for the info! I will probably wait for the new either the monster pro-grade Imac or for a refresh on the trashcan.

Anyone know if this will speed up ones ability to scrub though video in premiere? https://bizon-tech.com/us/bizonbox2-egpu.html/

I feel like we are going to have to wait until Thunderbolt 3 for something like that to work...but site claims it works.

Ive been doing this dance since 1994.

If I woke up from a deep sleep since 1999 today then yes I can see a diff.

But from one gen to another in a span of 3 years, I have never experienced anything ground-breaking in any NLE app on any platform.

3D software maybe but thats all GPU and that is at least in a 5 year span.

Quick question: I am ready to get the iMac 5k maxed out....
But I am in doubt about which of the two graphic cards to put in: AMD Radeon R9 M395 or AMD Radeon R9 M395X
is the 395X beneficial for editing or mainly benefit the game player?

What would you all suggest for the card? there is a difference of over $200

Thank you all!!

This is my configuration:

27" Retina 5K IPS Display
5120 x 2880 Screen Resolution
4.0 GHz Intel Core i7 (Skylake)
32GB of 1867 MHz DDR3 RAM
1TB Flash Storage
AMD Radeon R9 M395 GPU (2GB GDDR5) or 395x (4GB GDDR5)
802.11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0
Thunderbolt 2 + USB 3.0
Magic Keyboard & Magic Mouse 2 Included
Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan

its on all macs now with 10.11.1

the issue is that everything must support 10-bit in the chain

Vid card > App > OS > Monitor

It has been confirmed to display 10bit (30bit) on nMP w/ Eizo monitors

Embedded DisplayPort has been revised for the next 5K iMac refresh, which may come with a GPU featuring stacked memory tech as a high-end config option. Improvements bring it in line with the latest DisplayPort revision - lots of hardware and software goodies for those who want to use 5K displays - and fix some long-standing issues with ultra-high res panels and expensive hardware implementations.

My efforts to get an iMac from US via B&H is proving to be costly. iMac with i7 skylake processor is not available in my country. I want to know if I can edit 4k footage with the following iMac specs:
Late 2015 retina 27 inch
i5 processor
  • 3.3GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 processor
  • 32GB memory
  • 2TB Fusion Drive[SUP]1[/SUP]
  • AMD Radeon R9 M395 with 2GB video memory
  • Retina 5K 5120-by-2880 P3 display
I am told that apple online store is not available in my country, and the i7 is a configurable option. So it is not available. Please let me know if the above specs are fine for normal 4k editing with heavy VFX.

Sabyasachi Ive edited R3Ds on older MacBook Pros as far back as the 2008 Uni and they were able to survive.

I am sure the specs you posted will be fine.

Now as far as heavy VFX I would need an example and chances are you will need to hit your target res in a working editable format by then.

That could slow you down due to hard-drive speed options.

You def need a Thunderbolt 2 RAID system for the working files e.g. ProRes, etc...

Eric,
Thanks a lot for your comment. I decided to go with the 27 inch iMac i5 and then realised that Apple India just has displayed the new pricelist but not new iMac's. The sales reps had no clue that they were selling older items. Cursed Apple and returned home. Will now have to make alternate arrangements.
