  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I'm guessing the OLPF for the Raven will let as much light through as it can without IR contamination or the blooming orbs. Likely similar to the standard but perhaps with a bit less softening due to the lower pixel count and a market segment that would be more copacetic with a little bit of aliasing. Just a guess.

How is it a lower pixel count? If this is a Dragon sensor, with the same pixel pitch - then 4K on Raven is the same as 4K on Scarlet D, Epic D, and WPN Mg... No? No softer than shooting at the same settings on each of the other cams?

Explain your reasoning...

He simply means that the OLFPs by Red are much stronger(or coarser, or blurrier) than other cameras as RED hates aliasing. They may "unhate " it a bit and compromise with weaker OLFP for the sake of sharpness out of the box...
and yes- I am Blairs spokes person ;-)

How are the releases on new cameras? I remember the Scarlet waiting list, seeing one or two go out a day through December/January before i finally got mine in April.

Is it still a slow burn like that?

+1 - What do you think? Is it "Weapon" fulfillment than "Raven" or will they both be shipping simultaneously?

Glen, I think Blair is just referring to the fact that Raven users won't be downscaling to get their 4K finish.

Jacek is correct, my speculation was that RED might back off a bit on the strength of the OLPF to hold a bit more resolution. You make a good point though Glen, in noting that the pixel pitch is the same. Perhaps the sub-structures of the element will be the same, but with less dyes/IR cut.

Here are a few cases:
1] Make a Full Frame 35mm full frame that shoots at high speed with low compression and you get a super expensive camera called Weapon. Glorious RED, thank you!
2] Make a Full Frame 35mm full frame that shoots 24fps at mid to high compression video and you get the indie camera from hell. Please RED, this camera needs to exist!

Here is why case 2, needs to exist:
Higher sensitivity, better IQ and all normal advantages of a bigger sensor
Make it with an user removable lens mounts so that every one can shoot any lenses they want when ever they want. After paying for the REd made mounts of course!
Make it possible to make the crop factor you need.
Because it is not meant to be a fast frame camera (that why you have weapon and epics), you can make it light, you can make it cheap and you can make many of them.

This would be the absolute crash cam from bloody hell. A camera that would take proper stills at low fps. A camera that would be so small, so nice, so fun and yet so freaking bad ass, Not a single person in this forum for the life of God would ever, EVER, have to see a fucking go pro shot in the middle of a professional shoot, EVER again.

One last thing: call it bullet.

End of pledge.

PS: to all pros out there. Dont even give me the "people cant focus" tell. IF you can focus, then why even mention it. If other cant focus, you will still be a pro, so please. You all know, you would all buy 10 RED DSLR size RED crah cams from hell, because they would be absolutely fucking awesome!

I still maintain that the focus challenges for Full Frame capture in run 'n' gun, docs, wide open in available light, etc would be significant. If auto-focus improves enough, then perhaps Case 2 makes sense. Until then, anything over 85mm and under T5.6 at FF is going to require a proper focus puller - in LA, at least, that's $600-900/day depending on rep.

Another big Q is gonna be what OLPF. I am assuming LLO as anyone thinking of maybe migrating from an FS7 would STP at an image getting noisy so soon when they are used to clean 2000 right?

I don't think its a coincidence that red released the 4.7 RED TOUCH, and 120GB Mini Mag right before the announcement about the RAVEN. I think the same will apply to the OLPF.. would make sense the new "Standard" OLPF to ship with this camera.. swap-able OLPFs would be the icing on the cake imo...

Blair, your problem is simple, if FF + fully wide open fast lenses wont work for your particular shot, you can always adjust accordingly by closing your lens. Problem fixed. But you can never get less depth of field when you want it for a shot if you have a smaller sensor. Never. So, case 2, always works. And in all cases, the pros will always have perfect shots, and the non pros will easily spotted. Nothing changes, except for one thing: with case 2, you have a camera that we all want but wont admit for some stupid cultural reason that makes absolutely no sense what so ever.
What makes sense is to have a tool that can do as many things as possible. So far we can do most things with all existing RED cameras. But there is one missing powerful tool missing in this arsenal, and it is a small, light and dad ass full frame RED crash cam camera. Jared, I know you are there and I expect no answer, but please, do at least think about it for the future. I dare say there is not a single person out on this forum that would not buy it, even the focus pullers from the 70s.

This is a horrifically broad statement that I totally disagree with.

If you have enough lighting or only shoot outdoors... Even then, it might be hard on talent to look directly into 1,200 foot-candles. I'm really not trying to be argumentative, and I agree that there is some market for what you suggest Jonathan. I'm just noting that until truly great auto-focus is available, the vast majority of the user base such a camera would be aimed at would get frustrated quickly.

Fair enough Mark. What do you think would happen if a bunch of people went out shooting FF motion with the level of resources typical of low budget production? Especially in available light.

I'm not Mark, but have shot with VistaVision Film and virtually every FF DSLR that shoots video (on which some making rather difficult to examine focus).

I think that would broadly depend on their skill level, eyeball for quality control, and how important locking critical focus is for them.

The real truth can be found in how you utilize the tools. If I'm not missing focus today at 6K FF when at T1.3, T1.4, and the rare time I've been fortunate to shoot faster, I won't be missing focus tomorrow on 8K FF. This is largely due to:

- I practice pulling focus all year long
- I have a firm grasp and understanding of the In Camera Focus Assist Tools
- I have a game I play in my head where if I am out of focus it releases a trap door in which I will fall into MOLTEN LAVA and explode into light as my last living smell is that of my bones scorching inside of my body.

Anyways :)

An argument could be made that a lot of shooters coming up have experience shooting video on a 5D, and considering how vogue shallow DOF was for a time a lot of people would be pretty proficient pulling their own focus full frame.
