  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Most of our work is observation documentary work so will Raven be able to shoot good quality 1080p? We have no requirement for 4K yet for our broadcast clients and would prefer to be able to shoot for longer run times in full HD.
I don't expect RAVEN to have ProRes with internal downscaling included. REDCODE RAW and downscaling isn't going to happen too.

We don't know about the supported resolutions, but it's unlikely that RAVEN shoots solely 4k. So, like with any other RED, RAVEN will probably shoot lower resolutions too. Just keep in mind, FullHD will be cropped = smaller used sensor size (same as with current DRAGON cameras).

However, i would suggest to shoot 4k/3k for fine HD-delivery (and some room for stabilization and reframing). Just dial-in some higher compression to get the runtime. I would only dial in cropped resolutions if i need the fps or lower compression, otherwise always shoot max resolution.

Shooting RED at 2k for FullHD-delivery isn't giving you the very best results - but it works when needed.

I'm also hoping that Raven uses less power than Epic so we can get much longer run times without having to for heavier batteries. Small is beautiful in the doc world!!!
+1 on that.

I don't know what to think. Raven seems pretty nice. Smaller, lighter, with a mic, wifi, the new screen, 120fps, just for that last option I would love it. But I know that I shoot 4k on the scarlet D only when I really need it, ie only for higher framerates. It's a bit too cropped and noisy for my taste, that feeling was not as strong on the MX. Maybe owning both. Buying the brain alone and sharing the accessories....

To be really honest, I've haven't worked long enough with the Scarlet Dragon to even make use of all of its features and I don't want to wish against any potential features for new Raven owners. I'm glad that this is out there and I'm happy for everyone who's going to get on board with a RED at that price, which is crazy! I'm psyched.

I am just really happy with the Scarlet Dragon. I hope to shoot more and bigger projects, get a PL mount and rent great lenses, maybe some Anamorphics some time if it's right for a project... and be able to shoot features with it, do B cam for Epics, you know. Plus, I'm already setup with the older body for accessories. I went with the mini-mags so that doesn't preclude upgrades. I don't think I'd benefit from the weight savings so I wouldn't consider moving to a Raven from where I'm at.

Maybe you want to give the LLOF or the new Standard a try... see, there's another reason.

Could be wrong, but I don't see any motion-mountage/internal-NDage in the last pic (which allows you to see the mount and down the barrel to the sensor).
If that magic piece of glass is hard-installed directly in front of the sensor then you would have a hard time to identify it on such a picture. ;)

A bunch of you guys must sit on Dragon 4k footage. It doesn't matter if it's Scarlet or Epic—as long as it's from the Dragon sensor.

Anyone care to share a couple of seconds (not just single digit frames please) of footage shot at the 4k resolution in question?

I hope someone is willing to share existing footage or, honestly, just shoot the backyard. I'd like to get a feeling for texture and light. Can be pretty much anything—it's not about cinematography this time around.

It would be much appreciated!

Get ready for exponential tech rather than linear. We should ALL celebrate this camera as it may just be an inkling of what is coming for all segments.

Agree thinking of Bose speaker commercial. Hang on

If what some are forecasting (new currency of the internet will be video) Raven is arriving on schedule.

Raven is arriving on schedule.

RED's grown much on the camera release dates/shipping dates, not to mention the expanded Bomb Squad and dealers/support worldwide.

Raven to me means RED is making a commitment of a different type. Weapon is shipping right now. New Forged orders and upgrades are happening right this very second, myself included.

Raven using some of the same tech and parts as Weapon as well as the new DSMC² accessories. I imagine they are putting together a whole separate manufacturing line for Raven to keep it separate from Weapon's manufacturing process and to keep it from effecting shipping dates for both cameras.

RED is swinging hard right now. They listened to many high end and indie shooters very carefully. Within the same year they expanded the Dragon family on both ends to satisfy many people's wants/needs/desires. Not to mention the forward focus on the folks interested in the larger 8K format as well. That's honestly a hell of a thing to pull off essentially all at once.

Man allot of Scarlet MX users trying to sell for way too much $$$ on this Forum. Who do they think they're fooling lol

Crazy, those cameras are about to drop drastically in price once the Raven starts shipping.

Have to say never thought I'd see a sub $6k Red Camera that does 4K 120fps

All the younger shooters out there are pretty lucky, for what I paid for my Scarlet in 2011 kids are getting a ready to shoot package for the same price and much better specs.

So glad I sold my Scarlet in 2014.06

Allot of great options out there and older cameras for cheaper that still produce very credible images.

I still have my heart set on an Epic, just a matter of time before I can afford one

I seriously doubt RED will have fitted internal ND's into Raven. This is something I've wished for from day one when the RED One arrived but I just don't think RED will budge on this one which is a shame.

Everything that saves time on s shoot allows us all to focus on what's really important, the creative process.

When I've done doc work on DSMC Red's - I just used a Variable ND on the Lens.

It did work very actually, specially coming from ENG cameras to this... I just had two monitors and we recorded via ATOMOS to ProRes

Red Touch was set to False Color and the Atomos had peaking... we shot on Canon L series zooms.

Be interesting if it has a built-in EVF(specially for the price)

The reason why I think Red has avoided the Built in ND is due to form factor

If your shooting EXT-DAY I'm a HUGE fan of the Motion Mount

It's amazing and has been their work around

For NIGHT shoots not so much you loose too much light unless you have the production power to pump in the light you need.

Allot of Doc shooters want to shoot Red but I think you guys are better off with a C300 or FS7..... Amira if you can afford one

When I was in NYC in June I saw 4 FS7 and only 1 Epic in the wild

Fast working environments and battery life your better off with Sony or Canon plus you get the ND

I work in Cinema so we can care less thats what a 2nd AC or 1st AC are there for but very different for Doc guys since yours a One Man Band

While I agree generally in terms of the form and function of internal NDs, they do indeed provide optical concerns relating to specific focal lengths/lenses and the optical path. While it's convenient, I don't fully feel it's exactly the right solution just yet overall. It's similar to the Variable ND concept really. On paper it's a amazing, but in practice it can effect your image quality, sometimes severely. The weird thing is even the Alexa Mini experiences issues at ND 1.2 and 2.1 on the color and optical side of things.

I'm cool if RED ever decides to include internal NDs for sure (if they do I'll be using clear a LOT), but I know of one electronic solution that "nobody" is doing yet that is possibly the overall "right" solution. I want to see RED focus on that front to see if they can implement it.

Here is a sample. It was a rough day to shoot between getting fogged up and the weather but it's a sample.

That'd be shooting themselves in the foot -- having dual Mon/EVF ports, means they'll sell more monitors and evfs... Plus Weapon Form Factor has been confirmed, no?

@jeffrey, that's 4k 5:1 at 120fps? Can't really tell anything except that it's compressed for the web and slowmo...

4K for 4K up to 120fps and raw sounds great... I hope the ISO and dynamic range are there too!

It's 4K 120 on an Epic Dragon on the old SSD's. Couldn't tell you the data rate, I'd have to go look. I've got better stuff at 4K 120, thats just the one I have that I know for sure is 4K 120 and uploaded. I'd have to go through full length videos and pull time codes for other samples.

Maybe but it's a way of being lighter.
And Scarlet and Epic have only one port, it would be strange the entry level has two ports while the now "midrange" has only one. it would be nice, but... weird.

Please Red, fixed lens doesn't mean EF mount only. We need at least an F mount.

In Nikon mount, the Raven would sit on my gimbal and exo all the time.

I am sold!!! This is what I wanted the weapon to be smaller and lighter :) Thats what i need for Run and gun shoots and sold on the price!!! Very happy buying right away!!!
