  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I predict you are wrong on several key points.

As much as I love being right, I'd be happy to be wrong on this point. If the Raven can do RedCode and/or ProRes - or for that market segment, perhaps ProRes only - that's one more reason for the Raven to sell well. Side bet Mark...

It's confirmed that it does RC5:1 at 4k. So definitely not prores-only... If it does have prores, it likely can't do RC+Pro(-Am?) simultaneously... Or its limited to 1080p prores... plenty of options that likely require less hardware.

What I'd love Raven to be in a nutshell is a C300 with a RED brain and raw output. I agree built in ND's are perhaps not a perfect solution optically BUT they're used on virtually every broadcast tv camera for good reason.

For filming docs, I'll always take simplicity & ease of use over a camera that may be optically superior but is technically challenging in the field. In the moment I need a camera that helps me get what I need - this was the reason we sold our Epic. It was just the wrong camera for filming ob docs. Hoping Raven may be a solution though!

We need long battery life and efficient codecs that can record on affordable media.

I'm totally in the same boat. Right now, the work I'm getting is mostly doc stuff. As much as I adore Redcode and the Red look, it doesn't make sense for this kind of work. If Raven is even just an "okay" camera for observational documentaries, I'd probably take it over an FS7. I'm curious what the battery life will be. If there is a ProRes option - even just an HDMI output for using an external recorder - that would also be a factor.

My big question now is will the Raven footage intercut seamlessly with the iPhone 6s 4K feature film footage I'm working with?

I predict the Raven will switch on faster ... only need 1/4 of the memory to store black shade data ... and use the same ASICs The weapon uses, but clocked at 80% ... and have a a max SSD write speed of 125MB/sec.

As RED have already 'solved' ProRes as delivery format - I would have guessed R3D or ProRes (but not both) could be included.
It wouldn't surprise me if ProRes actually took less wattage.

Wait don't you think the Raven will have auto-black shade at this point? I sure hope so or all those guys upgrading from their Gh4s are in for a surprise!

At what temperature do you suppose it should do this automatically? I don't ask just to be facetious, I'm genuinely curious. Do people run at the same optimal temperatures most often, or do our shooting situations vary quite a lot?

How long does a black shade take on this thing? When you need to shoot as quickly as possible, will you be happy to reach for your camera to find that it is busy doing an auto black shade simply because it's temp had leveled off?

I think I prefer the ability to choose.

Very interesting. Price/Features sound very tempting. I wonder if behind-the-lens ND might (finally) be available - without loosing a stop of exposure when it's clear.

I doubt that they would put that in there. As you say, that would loose more than a stops even when fully opened which would make it a 400ISO camera instead of a 800ISO camera and for the market segment it´s aimed for that I think would be more contra productive than not having flicker glass behind the lens.

Question: As the sensor is about half width of FF I´m thinking it must be possible to speed boost x2 for FF lenses which would make it not only look really cool with FF glas but also make it really light sensitive. Or is the flange distance to far on EF to speed boost EF glas, would love to see a Metabones EF to EF speedbooster but possibly that is not possible, or?

Here's a quick summary of what just happened with Jarred and his late night Raven info:

Raven is RED's new entry level digital cinema camera. It will be $5950 for just the camera Brain, release date unknown as of yet. However, that does include a fixed SSD Media Bay as well as the fixed Canon EF Mount. There hasn't been other news regarding other mounts just yet, but more info will likely spill out of Jarred's insomnia or during the official announcement on the 25th (wait was tonight the official announcement?). RED Raven features a 4K Dragon sensor with a width 20.48mm that is capable of up to 120fps 4K recording and is part of the "DSMC²" family style of camera body along with Weapon, which likely means Raven will be compatible with the same accessories. RED RAVEN is the lightest weight camera body in the DSMC² family.

A modest shooting package with 120GB MINI-MAGs, the new 4.7" LCD Touch, and battery solution can likely be had for under $10k.

It's late, but I think I got all the info we know as of now in there.

Is there anywhere that he says 4K is max?

Please check my arithmetic but if dragon 6K (6140) is 27.7mm (H) and raven is 20.48mm (H) that would give 4540 pixels wide. That makes a lot of sense to me given both the BMD 4.6 competitor as well as the idea that you need some headroom for the loss due to Bayer pattern to get a true 4K or UHD resolution and would stick it to the Sony competitors that have only 4K actual pixels.

Drop down to 4K for high speed 120FPS.

Here's my breakdown for Ready to shoot at current store prices:

$5,950.00 Body/SideSSD
$1,150.00 Weapon Redvolt module
$1,450.00 4.7 touch LCD
$850.00 120 minimag
$850.00 120 minimag
$350.00 RedvoltXL
$350.00 RedvoltXL
$150.00 AC adapter
$195.00 Minimag station
--------------------------------
$11,295.00

Here's my breakdown for Ready to shoot suggested package discount prices to keep under $10K with out too unrealistic of a discount:

$5,950.00 Body/SideSSD
$900.00 Weapon Redvolt module
$1,200.00 4.7 touch LCD
$620.00 120 minimag
$620.00 120 minimag
$225.00 RedvoltXL
$225.00 RedvoltXL
$100.00 AC adapter
$150.00 Minimag station
------------------------------------
$9,990.00

It appears that the crop factor will be 1.87x - but that's at the native 4k aspect. The "under 10k" market (c300/TV/commercial) always asks for 16:9 aspect in my experience. Raven will have a 1.96x crop factor at it's 16:9 aspect (4kHD). So we will likely be thinking and referring to Raven as a 2x crop factor once we actually start using it for jobs.

I am excited about the possibilities - and its sounding like something I might buy. I am, however, skeptical of noise levels at 4k dragon. I've shot and reviewed a few 4k dragon tests, and they significantly underperform the c300 & fs7 in noise levels. Noise on 5.5k and 6k dragon is much better than 4k dragon, in my opinion. I'm guessing Raven will be a fixed olpf, but I'm hoping RED will let you order it with the LLO instead of the 'standard' - I also really really hope prores 422 is an alternate option.

Very cool to see RED develop it's product line and strategy moving forward, and continue surprising and innovating.

OK sorry was looking at an old spreadsheet I made - somehow had 27.7mm don't know where I got that.
