  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

4K NAB WARS

i must say... not only am i not threatened by canon's DSLR announcement.,... I also find it bloody hillarious... A dslr for 15K? What's the point? Until it drops to a 3rd of that price, it will not be revolutionary...

Even if it drooped to 1/5 of its prise - IT DOESNT MAKE ANY SENSE AT ALL. Why combine DSLR mechanics with moving picture capturing? Consumer "rebels" below 1K with video as a great option - thats max you can go with it. Above that is stupid. I seriously wish Canon to compete with GOPRO HERO cameras, not RED.

For me it makes sense. I've grown to love the dslr formfactor and I am not alone. Everybody has a different dream camera you know. If I could build a camera it would be dslr formfactor, full frame 35mm, shoots 24-25(maybe a more expensive with slomo-mode)raw image sequences, no audio, no internal ND's no nothing. Just raw images at a set frame rate baked together in some good wrapper.

Canon did get something right "The Cinema EOS C500 simultaneously records in-camera a 50 Mbps HD proxy video to a CF card that is immediately available to support offline editing." I would kill for a streamlined small Red module that would do the same. This would go such along way to appease producers.

A recommendation to some.

Before smack talking or belittling Canon cameras or features, think this one thing to yourself, "If it was RED that was bringing this feature or camera out, would I be praising it?". It will save you some embarrassment in sounding like an angry fan-boy. We all love RED, I own two RED cameras myself (and just sold my old Canon DSLR), but some of the things Canon release, I wouldn't mind seeing as a feature on my REDs one day.

Eventually it's all going to level out anyway. You can really only have so many useable features, and useable pixels, and useable light. Our eye's have limitations that will limit what the cameras will need to be capable of. Think about it, if we can see in the dark on a camera, how much further can you take that? Se through objects? Do we need 50 Billion megapixel sensors? No, Our eyes wouldn't be able to resolve that much at 'xyz' distance to your 50 Billion megapixel screen. Do we need 10 million person cinemas? No, so we don't need 50 billion pixels. Simple as that. At the end of the day, a movie shot @ 99K by candlelight, on a camera with auto multi focus lenses that have a 1cm DoF at 20ft would have to have a good story, good actors, and good team behind the camera, or no one would watch it anyway.

Wow, I don't usually post, but y'all got me ranting with your comments.

This is one of my favorite rants. Although I have to say: RED will be the first to 99k. :P However, I agree. As of now, I still haven't even seen 1080p on my TV. How sad is that? But I can hardly wait for 4k cinema to be standard. That will definitely be worth paying the $8 for!

I feel C500 will give Epic a real run for the money. I was out last night, shooting tests lit by street lamps and the moon only, and whoo boy, Noise City. Dragon better improve on the noise or C500 might well be the top dog.

But street lamps will look ugly anyway, even at a clean ISO 200000. I just don't see the point, at all.

The point is it was just a test. Nothing more to it.

Talk about making Obsolete your own technology before it even comes out, I fill sorry for all of those that purchased the C300, as well as all of those that purchased the 1D X, as now the C500 and the 1D C, will OBSOLETE both of them...

If you don't need to shoot high frame rates and get paid to deliver 1080, buying the C300 today will save you well over $15,000. Seems fair to me...

The difference between the C500 and C300 is huge compared to the difference between Scarlet and Epic. The C500 offers extra overcranking, additional HD-SDI outs, as well as the more obvious ability to record raw, compared to the Epic which is just a faster throughput Scarlet.

Yet because of where we are, the good people over at Canon have lost their mind, whereas RED can do no wrong?

The philosophy of Canon to not announce the C500 at the same time as the C300 is annoying but standard practice for almost all big companies. The only company that really spelt out its roadmap, our very own RED, now teases us rather than informs us, whets our appetite rather than quenching our thirst.

Just accept that these are all excellent tools aimed at different people with different needs and budgets.

Why all the hate?

Hold on a sec.. before you stop giving them all your money, keep the wallet open a little bit to keep buying lenses. They make great glass and I want them to continue on doing so.. Nothing makes me happier than running around with the Canon 70-200mm on my Epic. :)

nikon mount ?

If the 1D-C was ~$7500 then RED should've been concerned (for Scarlet)... even regardless of what Dragon offered (because Dragon obviously won't be free.) Think about it: FF35 1080p or APS-H sized 4k recording in-camera on over-the-counter media that can be purchased anywhere for cheap. Plus, 4:2:2 mjpeg can be edited directly out of the camera in almost any NLE (not just premiere)... And the batteries are inexpensive and last hours (not 30mins). No fans in the camera, clean at stupidly high ISO, plus a full-on 18mp FF35 stills camera that can shoot a whopping 14fps continuous!!! With properly downscaled 1080p from FF35 or s35/APS-H crops at 120/60fps (or whatever it is). That's all awesome. OH, and it'll be available all over the place, without month-long waiting periods or having to ship your camera back and forth (which is also expensive.)

... And yet, it's $15,000... which is the same price as a shootable Scarlet-MX package. In other words, all of the 1D-C's benefits get nullified by the mere fact that it's too much to ask for a non-RAW camera unless you're a user that really doesn't want to deal with RAW. As for the C300 (and F3); in late 2011, no one should've even been considering 1080p for $15,000 (R1mx was only 17,500 and 4k RAW) unless they absolutely refused to deal with the additional steps/render time RAW entails... However, if that's the case, they really shouldn't be surprised/upset by these 4k options available 1/2 a year later.

DITO....

Everyone gets to do whatever they want. But there are some facts to consider.

IMHO a pro should shoot the best original he/she can afford to shoot. It never hurts.

Shooting RAW (or compressed RAW) is infinitely better than shooting an RGB codec. For a million reasons.

Upgrading a camera is cheaper than buying new cameras.

Having the ability to use many lens options/brands is better than being stuck with one.

A company that listens seems better than a company that dictates.

Pretty easy stuff...

Actually... this should be a Recon post.

I am a proud owner of an American made camera.
I will not disgrace my camera with a Japanese lense.
i am not a racist and I love Japanese people but I'm done with Japanese cameras.
i won't even visit their booth in las Vegas. I dont need to realy.

I bet your beloved "American made Camera" has plenty of japanese parts :-) What a disgrace if true!

Just because it's a big company standard doesn't make it advantageous for the user. In fact, quite the opposite. RED challenges the big companies and their "standard" practices. They will either make things better and cheaper for the user or fall.

I would love to see Canon competing with RED, I love 3 options for under $50k, smaller form factor then the epic, less weight, more DR and a noise free camera able to shoot in the dark. With RED, I am getting more.

The philosophy of Canon to not announce the C500 at the same time as the C300 is annoying but standard practice for almost all big companies.

The only thing Japanese in an EPIC or Scarlet is some electronics "glue".

A direct result of the tsunami, if my memory serves me.

But maybe that event made you make some radical production choices, that pays off today.

I cannot see why it would be disgracefull to have Japanese parts in the cam, btw...
