  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

4K NAB WARS

just wait until Dragon monday morning then let them try again!!!!

This is exactly what Jim was talking about with "Why..."

Seriously, what the F Canon? If I were a C300 customer I'd be pissed hahaha.

But I'm a RED customer, and I am very proud of my investment in not only the equipment but the company and their philosophy behind that equipment.

Canon technology may be inferior BUT the C300 has sold in very large quantities and from the get go is a MUCH easier and cheaper camera to get up and running. Built in ND's (always wanted these on our RED!), records to low cost cards, and audio is better than RED's + arguably the Canon's are more reliable. Sure it shoots 1080p but for many this is what they are paid to deliver and what clients ask for and therefore it makes good business sense. Is it as good as Scarlet? Nope - is it good enough for broadcast and corporate delivery and will it make you money? YES!

I love RED and our new Epic is wonderful but let's not trash the competition too much :o)

Best wishes

Scott

I think that's kind of the point here... RED doesn't care about the number of cameras they sell. It's important, yes, but they aren't just trying to push crap out to everyone then say "screw you" and make their 3 month old cameras obsolete. The C300 won't get new color matrix updates. It won't get added features or tweaks based closely on customer feedback like RED does... and you sure as hell won't see Canon coming out and saying "Oh yeah, by the way, you don't have to buy a new camera, we'll upgrade your sensor and the necessary internals to make your camera an entirely new beast."

Canon, Sony, Arri etc don't really care about innovating at this point, they're just trying to play catch up and they're doing what all the smartphone manufacturers did after Apple came out with the iPhone... It's the "see, OURS will do that too!" yet executing it in a cheap, knock-off fashion.

The C500 is what, 12-bit raw? You need an external recorder to actually record raw? *sigh*

And yes, I realize I'm on a bit of a late-night rant, but my eyes have been opened to a lot of things since I began researching the RED system and philosophy a few years ago, and every time one of these big camera manufacturers does something like this I just have to laugh... they just don't quite get it do they.

I feel C500 will give Epic a real run for the money. I was out last night, shooting tests lit by street lamps and the moon only, and whoo boy, Noise City. Dragon better improve on the noise or C500 might well be the top dog.

Guys, don't worry to much.

There are coming many 4K+ cameras but the main issue is a codec, recorders and recording media.

Until that issue is not going to be solved and become a standard there is couple of years of that 4K chaos and madness.

There is also 4K iPhone in development but how you would record those 4K monster size video files on a mobile phone...???!!!

The last time I was had by camera was in 2008, bought the latest baldest SLR, five days later
there is a new version with an S added and video feature.

Then I become RED BLOODED with the RED ONE, and the only cameras I have bought since then is
an EPIC and 20 antique cameras (all over 50 years old) on EBAY for my collection.

The camera future will be ???????

But it does not need to be outdated before you buy it, and if you do then who do you blame.

Sorry to break it to you, but the Epic/Scarlet/Red One aren't made to shoot in street lamps and moon only... they're cinema cameras, not point and shoot, run-and-gun cameras. The DSLR video idea of not lighting shots and shooting everything by the light of street lamps is best left to cameras made for that kind of thing. If that's your style, get a C300 or DSLR.

No offense intended, but again, let's not forget that these are digital cinema cameras, not DSLR/C300 style cameras.

There is nothing wrong in wanting sometimes to have the option of natural light in cinema...at the end of the day they are all light capturing devices ......peace :emote_popcorn:

I love RED... love my EPICs... BUT... that's like saying Auto Focus cameras are not real cinema cameras. LOL. How quickly things change... I love my Canon Titanium mount and Auto Focus. I wouldn't mind having noise free images... albeit I already see big limitations in a C500 type system.

Also the EPICs are not just used for cinema... I bet most people don't use their EPICs in that manner. How many EPIC owners have you known personally that released anything theatrically?

Bingo bango...

Man, so so lucky not to get on that revolving door.... C300 lasted about as long as the life of a marsh fly... Well I'm excited about this 120 FPS RAW CANON.... Pitty it needs a RAW RECORDING DECK to go with it... but hey ! It's nice and cheap :)

Go Canon! Way to support your followers, obsolete there investments over night. Poor bastards. and to smash ARRI ALEXA... wow...

Time for RED to trump card. Actually... no need. I'm still on top. :)

a lot of these smaller 4k cameras are probably gonna ignore 4k on board recording this year and rely on third party companies to pick up the slack. ie.

it's all happening but there are still huge gaps that RED took care of years ago, like what the hell do we record to? RED invented r3d and placed the stepping stones to where we are now. every other company has to think of their own thing and place their stepping stones NOW, which puts them even more years behind in proper easy to post acquisition.

right now it's gonna be a lot of uncompressed route, which is fine, that ensures the highest quality but it breaks a lot of smaller productions in file sizes.

not to mention a lot of these smaller 4k cams are gonna rely on 3g hd sdi for recording, which theoretically, though I've never actually seen it done

limits it to a quad hd resolution instead of a full raster 4k. since 3g hd sdi can hold 2 streams of 1080p, if they combine it in stream, and you double the resolution of 1080p it's 3840x2160

and we'll probably be looking at recording around 270 megabytes a second or so. roughly. that's still over 10-16 gigs a minute in recording time.

there are a still a lot of hurtles a lot of these companies have to get past that RED has put in their past already...

A camera doesn't determine what is "cinema". It is the story, performances, characters, and overall production. I love my RED gear but saying that the C300 isn't a true "cinema camera" is inaccurate because it can very well be. And yes, there's nothing wrong with having a camera that is capable of shooting in all natural light. Just ask Mr. Mallick and Lubezki.

I think its got the balls.. 120 fps RAW 4k... $25k... and shoots HI ISO clean..., come on people. Those are all good points. I'm impressed.

What this just killed is the Alexa, the c300 and possibly the Scarlet... but scarlet was always going to get beat.

And I'm a RED EPIC lover through and through... I'm just hoping the EPIC doesn't get arse kicked like it did to everything else when it came out... Come on DRAGON I say. Blow us all away.

Blue steel ..to.... MAGNUM!!!! come on baby !

My observations have been that it takes a certain amount of vision to understand the elegance of the RED system for working in a visual medium. RED will never have all the business but I think it will always have the cream of the crop as customers because they are the ones who realize that this company doesn't just make cameras... they make solutions.
