4K Delivery... get ready.

I'm afraid we can not do that Sir. You give us dragon sensors and ask us to shoot 4k... I'm sorry but it will not happen. I think sooner than we know 4k well feel like standard def. And who on earth wants to satisfy with the common standards

While there is an 8K UHDTV standard, I believe 4K is going to be here for a long while. It's already here. Tomorrows RedRay news is going to be great news. And especially next year, 4K is going to be massive. I am already imagining how to derive really high quality material from a 6K sensor like Dragon. We're talking real pretty. For folks who like detail in their work it's going to be nuts. For filmmakers in general they will have a great deal of room to crop and re-frame while still producing a stellar 4K image.

Studios, companies, and other entities are going to be searching for experienced 4K shooters and 4K content. It's looking bright already.

I can't wait. Well. I can wait, but you know what I'm saying.

Anyone done a study of human perception of the diminishing returns of resolution on a typical 60" TV? In photo printing there is a point where extra resolution is wasted since it does nothing to add to the perceived detail of the print. Wonder where that line is for TV or movie viewing . . . 4K, 8K, 24K?

Good question Josh. By that point, we'd be talking about hologram resolution. Instead of lines of resolutions it'll be squares...ha, ha.

I'm sure many were satisfied with black and white TVs till color came and then sd to hd. We probably would never be satisfied as the younger generation continues to innovate (and surpass their parents and previous generation). Ah the circle of life...

This is what differentiates RED from Apple. A KEY difference. One that makes me loyal to RED and averse to Apple. I hope THIS never changes. This openness, combined with the EXCELLENT product design by RED will keep me a customer for as long as I have the dollars.

That 'paramount consent' article refers to a long gone and historical distribution model anyway. How do you feel that Hollywood and the RIAA actions on the internet are restricting the progress of content distribution today?

That's funny as I was having that conversation with someone on set yesterday about shooting 4K (which they where), then finishing in 4K and watching 4K. They asked when parts 2 & 3 where coming. I said watch this space

Jarred - Please tell me you have put a lot of thought into the interactive/menu layer. One of my many hats is a professional DVD & Blu-ray author. The DVD spec was antiquated when it came out and and the Blu-ray spec is absolutely horrific to author within and inconsistent to play back. I think Apple's semi-open standards based iTunes Extras is a much much better approach. (As was Microsoft's HDi and Sony's UMD).

Not to derail this discussion too much, but what you say about the interactive layer on BR is spot-on. SUN railroaded Java in to the spec, and it sucks. Microsoft's HDi was far superior from a performance/capability standpoint and was based on standards very similar to hose for interactive web presentation. While it wasn't "open" per se, I believe the licensing terms were far more favorable as well. I understand the authoring environment was pretty slick also.-sc

Geez, isn't that a bit like saying government has no right to intrude on your personal lives, but only as long as you agree with us on issues like abortion, health care, and a number of other things that, well, are basically intrusions on your personal life?

I understand your adherence to the belief that 4K is the best format for the moment. But there are an awful lot of productions that are financed by studios that specify HD delivery, or other formats. And others that are simply going to be distributed in only those formats. Do you only want your cameras used by those who agree with you, or do you really want everyone using them, regardless of their personal requirements? Putting "power in the hands of the content producers" means letting them do whatever they want with your equipment, not just what you would do.

Exactly...

My experience to those "haters" out there on sets who try and fight me on filming 4K boils down to this!!....The simple fact that some cant afford it in their budget to shoot RED and are forced to go with a lesser quality is what Im getting sometimes. When this happens I let the producers know that unless they shoot 4K these days, the film would be very limiting on deliverables and most likely never get a theatrical on that alone. Technology is moving very fast toward 4K delivery in theaters as well as consumer bases as well. If they fail to recognize this at the early stage of production it is a huge fail as far as resolution and film project longevity in a market where the public wants 4k delivery and projection. The future is here!!!!!

That is one hell of a stretch without any sort of evidence or cases to back it up. In fact I can think of countless films that would completely contradict what you're saying... Safety Not Guaranteed. Was a huge success this year. Shot on the F3 Anamorphic, so infact it wasn't even 1080P. Had a major theatrical run. And I don't think the producers of Skyfall would take that comment seriously in the least. I would be very interested to know what the percentage of films that were mastered in 4K vs 2K these days...
