  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

4K & 4K QHD

4K is "real" 4K with a width of 4096 pixels, but the aspect ratio is not 16/9 (around 1.90)

4KHD is just a bit smaller (3840 pixels wide) but has the advantage of being 16/9 and exactly twice the size of HD : 1920 x 1080 (4 HD sized images surface)
it does allow for more frame rates choices on SCARLET and also faster preview or scaling to HD size / aspect ratio

Also, 4K Quad makes for a better down-rez to 1920x1080 (due to the math) so if you're final output is meant for HD, it may be a better acquisition choice than 4K 4096x on a Scarlet X

Yep, the more I hear about the specs of this camera the more I like it & the more it confirms I made the right choice.

Is the 1.9 aspect ratio used anywhere? And will Youtube accept 4K files as I once read? And will QHD be resized to 1080p because it doesn't reach the full 4K resolution?

I have a question about the 4k. Scarlet page only shows '4K HD'. Does this mean we don't have 4K 16:9, 2:1 and Anamorphic 2:1, like the EPIC does, at least at this moment? Sorry if this has been asked before.
EDIT: On the compression chart it shows 4096x2160, which is between 4K HD & 4K 2:1? 4K QHD is equal to the 'normal' 4K HD in resolution? But scarlet specs page doesn't name 4K QHD nor the other 4K resolution. It's a little confusing.

Yeah I think YouTube does support 4k footage as I've seen a couple of clips. Of course its not going to be great but still better than nothing.

I don't think SCARLET supports 2:1 or Anamorphic 2:1. But, I'm not sure... Wait until someone else verifies that before you believe me. :)

Haha, well, it's part of the fun, i guess, figuring it all out :-).

I think i get it now, if the scarlet compression chart's resolutions are right. Which would mean it indeed doesn't do 4K 2:1, but it does 4096x2160, which is noted as 1.90 there, and that's even bigger, so you can crop without a problem.
4K QHD then is the 'classic' 4K HD as it was on Red One, and 4K 16:9 is just not possible right now, but 4K QHD should be fine.

It's a little confusing as the Scarlet specs page (only) shows 4K HD.

Brian, at present scarlet does not support 2:1 or Anamorphic but I strongly believe solution for Anamorphic is just on the way.

Youtube supports 4k videos, although really it's more to make a point : See this example
You will need to select 'original size' instead of the 360 or whatever it defaults you to.

However, I seriously doubt youtube will accept r3d files, so you'll still need to convert and re-encode etc... And everything will
be 'resized' to all the resolutions below that are supported by youtube.. (so QHD should be available in original, and lower -- but I don't
know if anyone has tested this).
