  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

4k / 2k PRO RES / DNxHD MODULE - who wants one.

Toia,

I love your moxy.

You ask the company who let 3K 2/3inch Scarlett go because it wasnt "good enough" or forward thinking enough to turn their 5K masterpiece into a 1080P camcorder.

I think Jared's thread announcing the Kipro and the SD Pix recorder pretty much sums up how far up the 1080P tree RED wants to bark.

Id say that 4K only prores 4444

Every NLE can handle it

that maybe makes sense but I want RAW in the forground not the background (which i think woud happen RAW would take a backseat to the module recording. Why? post houses are often not only cheap but lazy.

It's an F65Killer when the Monstro sensor is in your EPIC, or even with Mysterium now.

David

there are options that already do this however, the only difference is they aren't modules so there are cables involved.

otherwise the same.
there is no way to record slo motion on board in pores/dnx and no small item to
connect evf and lcd at the same time.
two very strong arguments in my opinion

I want the one with antena and the one with proress...
So yes I would buy both. price up tho 2500usd a pop not stop us from ordering the first day.. infact you could dubble it if the antennas have longer reach then the redmote...

also i do not care for 4k proress would acually rather have proress proxy and even 1280x720 its nicer to edit those on my macbook and they take so little space so the sdcard would last a full day probably....
offline use, simmple as that.

+1 on the 4k / 2k PRO RES / DNxHD MODULE.

Remember Jim said part of REDgamma3 is a big improvement to the monitor path. That says to me that the "baked in" 1080 look that goes to the HDSDI/HDMI outs has been improved even further. That makes Toia's module even more appealing. Put me down for 3!

Don't discount the power of wireless h.264. I wish they were thinner, then I would use both at the same time! Large SSDs (little attention necessary) recording 2k ProRes 444 for editorial, CF's recording h.264 for take-home dalies and wireless h.264 to all departments with the password.

Excellent point. I haven't been thinking about it. Just waiting to see the samples.

Toia module, please! :yesnod:

I don't need 4K or 2K. Just give me 1080p (and psf) PRO RES + DNxHD with RED COLOR and/or REC709.

H.264 would be a bonus.

I understand how important the RAW approach is to Reds Philosophy but availabilty of other video codecs does not diminish the importance of RAW. It simply allows a choice on workflow. Most of Red owners are owner operators and as freelancers their work covers a wide range and type of projects. I see the real advantage of a Pro res box being instant rushes. Assuming a box would produce video files with the same clip name, length and time code. Everybody would be happy and the R3Ds would only be seen at the colour grade where almost all the post houses are now fully capable.

Second tier clients with less demanding needs are likely to be happy with the "video" files but the RAW could also be recorded as of a kind of backup that could be referenced where a shot needs the extra flexibility that RAW offers.

While 4K pro res would be a great option my vote is for a 1080P video file. This is the file format everybody recognizes and are happy to with.

Mark, i was thinking about starting a topic like this to, just to make clear to RED how great it would be if they would make it!

+1 for sure! They H264 streaming module is a fun one, but not really important, but the Prores module can't come fast enough and would be a godsend, and making Red THE most versatile camera in the world. I would LOVE this, and nearly start making it myself if i could :) Please red make it, or partner a company like soundevices to make based on their existing technology! YES YES YES!

Prores is a very thick compression leaving little room for grading. Red is 50% hardware and 50% software thats the beauty of it. The camera is not designed to do only one. It would work great if its only for offline editing, as most of your footage won't reach it full potential and versatility.

To record in pro res as final output, it defeats the purpose of owning a red camera. There are other cameras that can do that for half the price.
