  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

3 weeks...

It's very impotent that Scarlet should have main feature (playback, HDMI, HD-SDI, Audio, Genlock, all recording compression options, 120fps, etc,...just all)
<snip>

I don't agree, just give me an awesome image grabber I can afford. Stuff that works on EPIC now will work on Scarlet because it will share the same code base as EPIC, all the others are the gravy. Everything on day one? I couldn't care less.

Not saying it wouldn't be awesome to have everything, just that they're not essential for doing great things. Just look at what's been done with early EPICs.

3 weeks to go... and things have already changed several times since the date was announced. Exciting! I can't wait to see where we end up on Nov. 3rd.

Jim

I couldn't agree more! The speculations have dropped to a criminally low levels. This cannot be tolerated and it's time to stir things up.
I have tried to peacefully wait out the 3rd, but I knew you wouldn't let us :-)

This is torture. I try to delve deep in the workflow and technical threads so I 'forget' about November 3d a little and then again. KAAbooom Jim throws another nuke :)
Loving this..
Can we undercrank the time till November 3d pls :)

cant wait.
I'm still one of those usinf Dof's and DSLR's so I know that November 3rd will change everything for me.. I will get a lighter rig for way more resolution, dynamic range and sheer quality. Am planning to use canon glass hopefully as I shoot a lot of live 'random' events.. So whatever the sensor ( still hope its s35 ) I know Scarlet will blow me away..

Thanks RED and keep the avalanche rolling.

I hope it will be censern some production details which will alow to increase production much more because now we have a great camera and now it is needs to sell it for all who wants!

My bet is that after our November 3rd announcement... we will never, ever, be out of back-order. Ever. Really. Never... ever.

Jim
Some see this as a bad thing but for me, it is very good news. Good news because having products perpetually on back-order means that RED is going to price their new products VERY competitively! It's easy to clear up any back-orders... just jack up the price so only a few can afford the item.

""t's easy to clear up any back-orders... just jack up the price so only a few can afford the item.""

True!!!

I think I may die of a heart attack before November 3rd! lol. I really REALLY hope the camera is really close to the $6k price tag though considering it started off at 3k for $3k. If it ends up at $10k I will be pretty down unless it turns out to be at the very least, a fixed lens S35 sensor camera.. That I'd probably be more ok with having to save up more money for. I never heard anything about the possibility of a fixed lens S35 camera, but with a similar lens they were going to put on the original Scarlet it sounds just about perfect for most filming situations. It would be awesome to have the capability of shallower depth of field, better low light performance and most likely better dynamic range of the bigger sensor. If it's still 2/3" I hope it's still $6k at the most. *Crosses my fingers*

Can't wait to finally hear everything though, regardless. The wait is so hard! lol.

Never invest in anything unless you can make it pay a return on your investment... unless you have money to burn.

...

Jim
That's good business advice. But I've come to realize that I'm not in a business. I'm confident if I put my Epics to work in an audio/video venture in my area I could be successful. Instead I choose to make movies my way instead of in a business way.

Please keep pricing affordable for starving artists. ;-)

There are no committees or focus groups for us. We don't know what a roadmap looks like anymore. Good luck keeping up with us. We can hardly keep up with ourselves...

Jim

I thought REDUser was the committee and the focus group - LOL

Bring it on Jim. Thanks for the update. Can't wait.

RED wine already in place for a late night here in the UK.

:-)

What if the new Scarlet design was more like a Contour Plus, only slightly larger to accommodate a 2/3" sensor?
Small, rugged, wicked fast up to 3K@120fps, x8 optical zoom with f/2.0-2.8, and can even be mounted to a helmet.

One can only dream...

Invest only in a system that grows over time. Everything changes. Make sure your system does too...

Jim

One reason I love RED is that it's the very opposite of a hard sell. "You don't need our products now? Don't buy them!"

What other company selling ANYTHING would say that?

Aye but there is the trick. How long will I have to see a return on my investment? ;) If I pick up an Epic-S and then 4 months later the FF35 is announced the depreciation wouldn't make sense and I should have just rented an Epic-S as needed for a couple months.

This worry is a bit puzzling to me.

Your EPIC-S does not suddenly become worthless once the FF35 gets announced. FF35 is more expensive and needs pricier lenses.

Look at the picture of used RED ONE sales. They have held their value very well. I'd be surprised if you lost a significant amount of money selling an EPIC-S once it was time for you to receive the new FF35. If backorders are as horrendous as they have been for RED ONE, you might actually be able to command a nice price premium on your S.

And rentals are insanely expensive. I would think that the cost of a week or two of rentals on an EPIC-S would easily exceed likely depreciation.

Aaaah, this scares me...I'll have to make sure my trigger finger is ready to try and be one of the first to place that order...constantly reloading the page until it is available...

Just curious, if you guys have any idea if the backorders for Scarlet are going to be consistent with other pieces and systems, or if it's its own assembly line and will just depend on the ebb and flow of the orders? Basically, will you be able to get more Scarlets out than other products, but so many orders that it will still be backordered? Or is amount and assembly on par with EPIC curently?...which is what, 13min assembly time last I heard?

Excited either way, looking forward to the surprise :-)

I'm literally jumping up and down in my seat like a little kid who just saw a commercial for the coolest new toy since yesterday...

Except I dont think theres ever been a cooler toy, errrrr, tool, in this industry. Cant wait, stoked doesnt even begin to describe it.

I'd like Jim to give a keynote on Nov. 3rd. There is that void to fill...
