  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

3 weeks...

But how is that product even possible? What features will be removed from Epic-X to sell Epic-S at $12.000?

I saw it as carrying most features but simply being limited by processor and bandwidth. Think of it as the difference between and iPhone 4 and an iPhone 4S. Both are incredible, but even though at the moment the difference is marginal, over time additional features will make the difference in horsepower more apparent.

So the immediate effects would be in lower redcode compression ratios and higher overcranking framerates. But later on, it would extend to larger sensor upgrades and newer firmware-related features that are processor specific, such as automatic target tracking and focus pulling. That's my guess. Hell of a dilemma on which to buy if it pans out that way.

My bet is that after our November 3rd announcement... we will never, ever, be out of back-order. Ever. Really. Never... ever.

Jim

Then I'll order the first one right now. Fantastic, I just scored Scarlet #0001. Nice dealing with you Jim :)

*walks away whistling with hands in pocket*

YEY! Nice to hear that. I shoot with R1 back in my country in Brazil and now I hope to get one or two of those babies!

I think at least half of the people commenting on this quote are continuing to misread it. Jim said he expects they'll never be OUT of back-order. Meaning they'll always be IN back-order. In other words, he's expecting demand for the cameras to be so great that even running the factory at its maximum capacity, they'll never be able to completely satisfy the demand. He's probably right. Let's just hope the back-orders will be relatively short. And I fully expect most of the limiting factors will not be the RED factory, but rather the various manufacturers of the parts which make up the RED cameras. Some of these parts require highly specialized capabilities that only a handful of manufacturers have. Jim and Co. are doing their best to work around that, but reality is what it is.

Gosh, I was going to post the same. Never out of back-order leads me to believe the camera is still very close to what it was, ie: fixed lens, etc... I just hope camera's are going to start shipping on the 3rd as well ;-) Seems like Canon's announcement is just that, an announcement. Their camera probably won't ship till sometime in 2012...

I just had reason to crack open an HPX170, after it shot six hours in driving wind and rain, to dry it out. After seeing how insanely complex the internal design is compared to the EPIC, I think the Red crew will be able to satisfy our hungry demand for awesome cameras quite handily. It's always astounded me that engineers and designers would create such insanely complex things like that HPX, jacking up the manufacturing costs in the process. The old clamshell iBooks from Apple were like this too. But the EPIC? Gorgeous design in there. Few boards, sensible layout. My hat off to you, love you guys at Red, seriously. People I can relate to, on so many levels.
